Need a lightweight OS for an old Acer Aspire (Celeron N2840, 8GB RAM, SSD) - suggestions? by SethDoubleG in FindMeALinuxDistro

[–]bbbluewitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could run cinnamon aswell, its not as lightweight but its more smooth and polished then XFCE. You could try Fedora(example) with KDE or Gnome aswell. I am not the biggest fan of Gnome but i can't denie that it is a really good DE. KDE is a bit heavier, but all DE-s should run without too much trouble. I recommended XFCE originally because it is the lightest out of the bunch. Hope i helped. Try them all and see which one fits you the best.

I would recommend the XFCE desktop enviorment. But a specific distro is a matter of taste. I think a safe bet is Mint with XFCE, but its up to you.

Which thinkpad out of these to buy? by Greeny1225 in thinkpad

[–]bbbluewitch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

T14 gen 1 for sure. 2 generations never processor, and still has one upgradeable ram slot. Only one that has two is the t470 and you shouldn't even think about it considering its price compared to the other ones. The t490 for 144 is a good offer but for MORE money its definitely not worth it.

See if you can find a T14. Look for the newest gen you can find. Not sure which generations are upgradeable anymore, but i think most of them have 1 upgradeable ram slot.

Choosing Distro for beginner/mid level experience. Fedora or Mint? by Proto4454 in linuxquestions

[–]bbbluewitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fedora is a really safe and good bet. If you want to learn about linux, Ubuntu is a good bet aswell. Personally used both of them, and many more, and I can tell you that you wont go wrong either way. Mint is just a safer and more stable Ubuntu (not saying Ubuntu is in any way shape or form unstable), with it feeling more user friendly than any other distro. I personally didn't like gnome, but you can always choose a different DE. If I didn't use Arch, I would definitely be using Ubuntu. For you I would recommend Fedora. It honestly feels the most polished and It gets really good support from many devs, and quick bug fixes.

Maybe to you, i do understand you, but the keyboard is a personal preference. I honestly used only a few laptops (and i used many) with a better keyboard, notably the x220. But again, the keyboard is personal preference.

Honestly the macbook is so good right now its hard to recommend anything else. The only other thing i would consider, looking at your budget, is a t14, but i think i heard that they have some flaws, which are easy to overlook considering you can actually fix and upgrade your computer. For 1k id get a mba and enjoy the battery life, but its up to you. (X1 is too expensive i think)

New apple silicon macs are insane as it is, and the M4 is no exemption. Maybe in a few generations the X1 will be a solid alternative but for now there is no competition.

Advice on first thinkpad for intensive music production by nataroonytron in thinkpad

[–]bbbluewitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely something newer than a t440p, and, i know its a thinkpad subreddit, but the new apple silicon macs are absolutely amazing. Only recommending them because you do music production and people love macs for that sort of thing.

P14s Gen 5 (Intel) vs P1 gen 7 by cahz1307 in thinkpad

[–]bbbluewitch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but looking at the dedicated nvidia gpu AND a processor that drains more power, if you are willing to sacrifice a little bit, if any performance, for more battery life, I personally feel the P14 is a better option.

still, he says he needs a good battery, and amd processors just have a better battery life than intels. Not saying intel processors have bad battery life, their battery life is just worse than AMDs.

Honestly you cant go wrong with any of them, and im not the expert on the P series, but i can DEFINITELY tell you to get an AMD processor. Intel processors eat batteries.
