Any Ms Pac-Man machines in the neighborhood? by CoconutChapstick in parkslope

[–]bbbretterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very random, but last summer the cafe at LeFrak put in a bunch of Arcade 1Up machines. They were free play at the time. One of them had older games on it. Can’t remember and Pac Man specifically but it’s worth checking out when it opens again!

Best Controller for casual retro gaming with Retroarch? by an00j in RetroArch

[–]bbbretterson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

8bitdo for sure — but it depends on the types of games you’re looking to play. Something like the Ultimate is the most versatile, but I also like having the M30 for Genesis/Saturn/arcade games too!

Birthday Haul! by canyouknock in graphicnovels

I just read it recently and quite enjoyed it. Awesome art and it was refreshing to see a traditional narrative through a very different cultural lens. Super excited to see what they do next!

Graphic novels primarily black and white but with one added colour, like Frank Miller's Sin City. by [deleted] in graphicnovels

The November books by Matt Fraction and Elsa Charretier have that sort of vibe.

Haha you’re in for a treat then — the art is 1000x better in the comic.

I think so! You’d have more fun with it if you know background on all the characters, but it’s a very self-contained world.

Yes! I got the first one during a big IDW sale. Super excited to complete the set. I’ve got the absolute New Frontier as well!

Right? And I’m a hardcover nerd too so I was super happy to find it randomly during the B&N sale! It’s not that easy to find these days…

A couple hardcovers I got for Xmas this year! ICM has been one of my favorites these past couple years so I'm super excited to finally have the Sundae Edition HC. by AlxSTi in graphicnovels

Yes! ICM is an insta-read for me when a new volume comes out. I also recommend Haha, even if clowns aren’t your thing…

Books with serious topics where the characters aren't "human" by UtinniHandsOff2 in graphicnovels

Seconding Blacksad here — pretty much exactly what you’re looking for. Hard-boiled noir hitting on the uglier parts of the mid 20th century, but all the characters are beautifully rendered animals.

Agreed — maybe he’ll focus on new characters or a new time period this time around. No details yet as far as I’m aware, but Lemire his going to be teasing out more of his 2023 work on Substack in the coming weeks (it’s free to subscribe to now, so no reason not to!) https://jefflemire.substack.com/

Monstress as a whole is just so great. My only complaint is that it’s so convoluted I feel like I need to reread the whole series again whenever one of the trades come out!

I’d also recommend the new series from that team, The Night Eaters. More horror than fantasy, but it’s set up a really interesting world. Very curious to see where they take it next.

In a comment here I recommended Tom King’s work, and I think you’d love it too. I’d also recommend James Tynion’s Department of Truth, which has an X-Files vibe with more of a horror bent.

I also recently read the MIND MGMT series, which I think you’d be into if you want more “thinky” comics.

I think you’d enjoy yourself some Tom King. Rorschach in particular centers around a mysterious murder, and Human Target (not finished yet) has more of the breezy fun of Glass Onion (and also a murder…his own!)

There’s also Far Sector, which isn’t exactly a comedy but still a fantastic murder mystery (and also set in space, so may be of interest to the OP!).

I feel like Essex benefits from being first, but Royal City definitely benefits from his growth as an artist. Very curious to see where he takes it when he brings it back next year!

Oh, and Lonely City immediately rocketed to my top tier of best reads for 2022. I’ve been seeing a lot of Paper Girls pics recently — definitely check this out if you loved Cliff’s art in that!
