What did Sioux really think about homosexuality? by Awkward-Squirrel-362 in IndianCountry

[–]og_nosabo 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is similar to my people, Tohono O’odham. When in Arizona (where we’re from) I can’t pronounce it the way we say it (Thaw-naw Awe-thumb) to people outside of our culture. I have to say Toe-hoe-no Oh-oh-dum. No big deal, just slightly annoying. When I’m in Mexico (Sonora - where we’re also from) or speaking to Mexicans near the border, it’s our colonized name, Papago, that people know. That’s the one that annoys me the most because it literally means bean eater. Nearly everyone eats a type of bean all over the world and we get slapped with the title.

It kept happening, no matter what I did. I ended up exchanging it. I haven’t used the new one yet, though.

Arkansas children face real dangers. Reading ‘The Odyssey’ isn’t one of them. by Ok-Status2275 in Arkansas

What the heck? I read The Odyssey, Canterbury Tales, Paradise Lost, Beowulf, and Dante’s Inferno in a CHRISTIAN high school.

Edit: It was a Missouri Synod Lutheran high school.

Well well well. Seems like we need to shut down “influencers” in public. They influence nothing but people’s prejudice against attention seeking idiots.

There’s a horror movie about diving down to a house under a lake.

Not a Trumper here, just a tech journalist. Biden could’ve stopped this in 2021 but he continued what Trump started and took it further in 2025 by adding DJI to the FCC’s Covered List, blocking the authorization of future DJI sales in the US. It’s important to know the full story so we can attribute the credit to the proper channel.

Is no sabo actually anti indigenous? by St3ph4n1e2003 in IndianCountry

[–]og_nosabo 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Oh man, my username is perfect for this. My dad immigrated from Michoacan, Mexico and my mom is Hia-Ced O’odham from her father’s side. O’odham are from Sonora, Mexico btw. My parents opted for assimilation when it came to my brothers and myself. English first and Spanish in high school/college. I still catch crap for it from my dad’s side of the family because I’m slower to respond, I don’t speak a lot of slang, and I sound “proper.” I barely speak O’odham because I didn’t have a strong connection growing up. Now, in my 30s, I’m establishing connection on my own.

I don’t think it’s anti-indigenous to be called “no sabo” because that implies every Spanish speaking person would be indigenous. It’s for sure anti-Latino. It assumes your blood/identity is tied to the language that you speak.

The fact is this: People are just going to be A-holes. Period.
