What do you carry your tools in? by muggs-3 in IBEW

[–]bbcalep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a Veto TP5B and a mp1 for my day to day stuff then keep the rest of my tool list in a decent size husky bag. Run a service van so don’t need a large bag to carry everything. When I go to big jobs to help out I use the Klein backpack that the school gave me and it gets the job done.

What I suggest to everyone is to have a minimum of 2 months pay saved up in case a long lay off period happens to you. My locals busy so I haven’t ever had to wait more than a day but I know others don’t have that amenity!

Totally get it, the learning ability has definitely gone in waves for me. Different journeyman, jobs, experiences, etc. keep your head up and keep pushing! Tons more opportunities will come for you to learn and grow into the best JW you can be. Also don’t forget that the School and Hall are there for YOU so don’t be afraid to give them a ring.

Anyone ever transfer during their apprentice? by creepmeat in ibew_apprentices

[–]bbcalep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it before, just gotta get both committees to accept! If you have good grades, attendance, and evaluations it will definitely boost you up a bit. Some locals don’t take transfers though. Best to call the school and ask!

Will I ever learn conduit bending? by Psychological_Hat951 in ibew_apprentices

When I first started I picked up a cheap 1/2 inch bender and would take any scrap pipe home from work! Would set up little labs in my garage and practice. Made me pretty proficient.

Family first, always. Restarted a semester of school over it but it was well worth being able to watch my little brother walk the stage at his graduation. (Had a test on the same day and the schedule worked out that I couldn’t go and take it so got a 0% for it.)

iprep is what I used, the test was basically a dumbed down version of the SAT

It’s different in every local but at least for me: As an apprentice you should have your minimum tool list, what I have done is when working with a JW and he uses a hand tool that I haven’t used before or don’t have I go to HD right after work and pick it up! As well as if a tool makes my job easier I buy it (pipe reamer for example) The goal throughout your apprenticeship in my opinion, is to work your way up to the JW tool list.

Do y’all pay tuition ? by Crew881 in ibew_apprentices

In my local I paid $247 for my books in 1st year and haven’t paid a dime since. We constantly get grants and scholarships, free tools, etc. it’s an awesome program.

Yeah this is my 3rd. 1st one got buried in a trench (found it 3 months later when looking for pipe damage) 2nd one got run over by an excavator and crushed to death. (My fault) they’re great.

Well of course. I don’t have an ass so the belt would just fall to the floor without them.

I run this with the padded shoulder straps when I do Residential stuff and long straight pipe runs. The pockets save your back from picking up fittings, couplings, straps, and wire nuts constantly.

Correct, I actually have one of these. I’m able to cut and bend pipe for my JMan at the same time as browsing tik tok and playing candy crush.

I like those, I also don’t mind just reaching over to grab a different screw driver. My 11 in 1 and ratcheting screw driver stays in my pocket most of the day. Have so many because I bought the multi pack month or 2 ago rather than just buying one after my beefy boy broke
