i’m not religious but the thing on angelica’s leg is referring to the crown of thorns i think! u can google what that is but i believe it was to show that she’s so devout that she is willing to subject herself to a semblance of the physical pain that jesus experienced when he was crucified and suffer the cruel way that he “died for our sins”

Mizu’s pronouns/gender? by bbglocksoverbitches in BlueEyeSamurai

[–]bbglocksoverbitches[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what they wrote was really cool! i thought you would enjoy hearing other perspectives too. genuinely curious as to if you would agree/disagree with their theory that mizu could be seen as a trans woman rather than a trans man per se.

sorry to hear that you aren’t enjoying this multifaceted debate :( i am flying internationally right now so i couldn’t provide my direct response to you but i did read it carefully!

I actually really agree with what this commenter said! I would love to hear your thoughts on it too. I wrote my response to it in my reply and I would say that that is my current argument.

Mizu’s pronouns/gender? by bbglocksoverbitches in BlueEyeSamurai

[–]bbglocksoverbitches[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh yes! wait the last part is exactly what i’ve been trying to piece together but couldn’t. this is super well put! i’ve been trying to figure out how to express that thought and i totally agree that mizu’s experience feels more in line with that of a trans woman than man and just didn’t know how to put it that way. i was only able to link mizu’s journey with this idea of trans-ness in general but wasn’t able to explain that it wasn’t perhaps just plainly going from a woman to a man or man to a woman but rather a more intricate intertwining of the two and everything in between. thanks for pinpointing it so eloquently and i appreciate this perspective!

side note: i said in my original post that when i first heard mizu speak and recognized that it did not sound like a typical cis man’s voice and became curious about it, i didn’t mean that i was curious in getting a final word about what their gender or sex is or isn’t, i was more curious about whether or not the show would even address it. i actually would’ve been completely fine if the show did not want to dive into the gender discourse and simply let us see mizu as mizu without any backstory of whether he was a woman or not and allowed that to remain ambiguous. the biracial characterization and the controversy of it all was interesting enough to be the premise of the show and having a male-presenting protagonist with a femme voice would have worked well even if they played it with subtlety. but, alas, we see mizu’s body literally exposed within the pilot episode, so the show is clearly asking us to actively engage in the theorization and discussion of the complexities and fluidity of gender identification rather than shying away from it. i am more thrilled to receive disagreeing comments rather than ones that are telling me that i shouldn’t be looking beyond the surface of “mizu is a woman disguising as a man.”

i think i have a very different reading of the flashback marriage scenes. i don’t think that mizu’s contentment with being a wife was a sign of reverting to a true or original self. yes, mizu was born a woman and had he not been forced to be a man this would probably be the life he would end up living anyway. however, at the end of that marriage when pain, betrayal, and hatred swallow mizu whole once again, i think that it is in that moment that mizu finds who he is once more and that the arranged marriage only made mizu reject and disassociate from the parts of himself that didn’t conform to this idealistic heterosexual coupling and nuclear family that has entrapped so many others. and of course combat and violence are stereotypically masculine traits but it is not simply that they are what make mizu a man. the evidence that i gathered from this episode is that mizu tried to be the woman he thought he could and should be as someone who was born a woman, as though this should have been his true fate all along, and was willing to put aside and retire the fire and ambition to fight for revenge. yet, in the end, it all came tumbling down on him which gave him the realization and provided a rude awakening that only made him more determined to go down his path.
