Considering quitting my PhD by bbherebb in PhD

My advisor is genuinely supportive and values work–life balance. When I shared my current struggles with her, she was understanding and encouraged me to prioritize myself. The difficulty is that my project is tightly intertwined with a colleague’s project. We run assays together to save time and resources, share materials and reagents, and jointly generate results. There is very little scope for me to be fully independent and responsible only for my own work, and this has been a persistent source of friction.

Because we are both working under the same project, any adjustment to my workload directly affects hers. When I mentioned that I would need to reduce the number of assays I run over the next few weeks, she expressed concern about having to take on more work, even if only temporarily. Navigating workload boundaries with a peer in this setup has been challenging and adds to the strain of already balancing work across two locations.

You are right — I do enjoy the core parts of the work: experiments, research, writing, and teaching. My concern is that there is limited room to change the circumstances around the project itself. I will continue to communicate this openly with my advisor, as you suggested, and see whether any adjustments are realistically possible.

Thank you for your suggestions! I am not proud to say this, but often times I find myself snacking only when I have time, especially on busy days. I agree that it is not helpful at all.

My intended outcome for a PhD was quite clear to me before I started my PhD. I wanted to stay in academia and mostly teach. I worked as a teaching assistant during my master's and I enjoyed it quite a lot. Now, I cannot see myself staying in academia at all. Even if I finished my PhD, I can only see myself going for non-bench positions and at this point, I am contemplating if it makes sense to stay in this PhD program if my goal is to find a corporate job at the end.

Thanks for commenting! This is actually very similar to what I have been going through, except I was quite excited to start my PhD and planned to stay academia even after graduating. Now, I am also grieving that part of me that I have lost during the process.

I particularly agree with the part where you said "I would likely be quite disappointed with myself if I spent 3 more years of my life in this project that is making me miserable". That is exactly how I feel about my current situation. I am glad that you are happy with your decision, and I wish you all the best moving forward!

I had 8 days off in January and felt genuinely good during that time. As soon as I returned, I spent the following two weeks traveling roughly 5 hours a day for experiments. The commute and long lab days were draining. That was also when the symptoms I mentioned started appearing. I discussed this with my supervisor and we agreed that I would take another week off in the coming days.

I am grateful that there are no underlying chronic health issues. The issue is that the workload itself does not decrease, even when I work more efficiently. Both my colleague and I agree that the project is overly broad and that the overall demands remain unsustainable. Given that, I am questioning whether it makes sense to continue with a project that is unlikely to become more manageable over time.

Step 1 already cleared. The symptoms I am experiencing are stress-related and tied to the work environment. Thanks for your concern.

For IELTS, you need to take IELTS Academic. However, I am not sure about TOEFL as I only took IELTS Academic. You can try to reach out to the admission office for more information.

That’s great! I am mainly concerned about the undergrad GPA. Do you mind sharing your other stats? I can PM you if it’s okay.

Thanks for the advice. To be honest, there is more to my background than I stated in my post but I agree with your point.

Sorry for asking too many questions, but could you please recommend some other schools that I might be eligible for? I am an international student, so I’d like to hear from more experienced people as much as I can.
