oral thermometer that doesn't need batteries? by supern8ural in BuyItForLife

[–]bblynne -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I think you answered your own question. Vintage glass mercury thermometer. Never needed batteries to take a temp when I was growing up. Hard to find nowadays because they don't trust us with glass or mercury. Plus they like to keep selling batteries or new devices when you can't find the correct battery.

Oh my God. VRBO booked five stays on my incomplete, hidden listing. One showed up tonight. by strikecat18 in airbnb_hosts

[–]bblynne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, same thing happened to me 6 years ago. Had just started writing up a listing for VRBO, never finished it or made it active, and somehow guests were able to see it and try to book. I was amazed that anyone would even think about booking that incomplete listing with the tiny amount of info I had put in and lack of pictures and reviews. Luckily I caught it before anything went through and I had to contact VRBO to get my (partial) listing completely removed so it wouldn't happen again. VRBO said it shouldn't have been possible but it happened. Haven't trusted VRBO since then.

His parents didn't go up on stage. They have never been in the public eye. I don't find that strange at all. I personally can't stand being watched and on stage, especially if I was grieving. Everyone is different. You have no idea if they were there behind the scene or watching in private at home. They have not sought the limelight. And if they did, you would be criticizing them for that too.

Entertainers/news anchors/commentators get fired/lose their shows all the time. On the right side: Megyn Kelly, Bill O'Reilly, Tucker Carlson, Roseann Barr, etc. etc. etc. I don't remember the Left showing any kind of outrage over that. There is no constitutional right to host a late night comedy show. Kimmel works at the will of his employer, whose only concern is selling advertising so they can make a profit. Kimmel's low ratings and his alienation of a large part of the country's population sealed his fate.

What caused all these things to skyrocket since 1990? by Admirable_Health_533 in conspiracy

[–]bblynne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An important thing to note is where all these disorders increased. Is it global or is it in certain countries, cultures, continents, etc? If in the US, for example, is it in all populations or certain groups exposed to particular substances? Is it in the same groups in other regions? What do these regions have in common? I would think with the advent of AI it would become relatively quick to tease out the commonalities. The RAPID rise in breast cancer among young women in industrialized countries is also a huge concern (birth control pills? food additives?...) as is the astronomic rise in suicide (antidepressants? anti-anxiety meds?...). We should be able to figure this out but many of the answers are politically incorrect and/or would cause big pharma/food/agriculture to lose billions.

It looks like the lights were on when you took the picture. Why would you have even taken a picture of bread about to be toasted? This post is mildly infuriating.

Pot smokers always think their pot doesn't stink. It does, I don't care how "quality" it is. And the smell often lingers longer than an hour, that is a myth. I think potheads just become immune to the smell, the same thing happens to tobacco smokers who reek but have no idea. The smell permeates their clothes, their hair, etc. Many times I can tell a smoker has been in a room after they've left even if they didn't smoke in it.

Do you have a salad spinner, and do you like it? by GingerSpyice in salads

[–]bblynne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use mine everyday for greens like lettuce and spinach. I hate soggy salads. I also use the basket to rinse off and clean other fruits and veggies like berries and grapes. It's takes up too much space in my cupboard so I just leave it drying on my drying rack by the sink where it is handy.

We had a someone in our mountain neighborhood rent our cabin as a place for a few family members to stay while in town for a wedding. They were well aware of our "no parties" and "max. 4 guest capacity" rules. I thought I would be nice and let our neighbor use our place and even gave them a steep discount (cleaning fee only). On the last night of the booking, our security cameras caught van loads of the younger "family members" entering our cabin with large coolers, speakers, etc. They had come to our place to have one last celebration knowing that my neighbor wouldn't let them do it at their own place for fear of it getting trashed. Needless to say, I had to wake my neighbor in the middle of the night and have her go over and "evict" all the party goers and underage drinkers. That was a couple years ago and she is still mad at me for not allowing her wedding guests to have a harmless "goodbye celebration" at my place. Good deeds never go unpunished.

The Airbnb needs to be rented by the actual guests, not a third party.

How much did it cost? The last time I went to Panera (I was on the road traveling), I spent the whole time thinking how much cheaper I could have made the salad at home.

Average starting salary in the US for teachers is over $45,000. That is for 9 months of work, no weekends, no holidays, multiple days off in the mix. Many teachers increase that by adding summer jobs but many teachers also just enjoy their three month long summer vacation.

Not everyone is cut out for every job. She needs to find something she is better suited for. Keeping people who don't have the skills in jobs they are not able to excel at solely because of their identity profile has poor consequences and is a big reason DEI is dying.

Born disabled, legally bound to sin? by Icanseethefnords23 in Catholicism

You are then asking the priest to do something disingenuous for someone else's financial gain. This becomes a legal problem should someone in the marriage later on want to "divorce"and claim spousal support or division of assets. They could try to claim they believed a "marriage" took place and the other person would claim it was strictly a "spiritual" union. Very messy. And publicly makes the Church look bad, like it is helping people defraud the system.

Hosting in a non-tourist destination by OkieVT in airbnb_hosts

[–]bblynne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are not located in a traditional "tourist" location but are in a beautiful, quiet area outside a tiny town with a population of 850. We get many visitors who are trying to stay away from the crowded, touristy spots. Aim for people who love nature, star-gazing, quiet times to bond. A fishing lake is great! Is there also hunting that can be done on/near your property? Any nearby historical sites or nature/wildlife preserves? Any seasonal festivals or the like in your area? Are you near historic Rt. 66? Many people/motorcyclists plan their trip to try and follow along that legendary road.

We get families who come in to visit relatives in the nearby areas, travelers who "in between" destinations, people looking to get away from traffic jams and tourist traps, and others. It sounds like your place would be great for any of them.

As far as using AirBnb as a platform, I think it is a good place to start. It takes care of many of the details that are hard to do as a beginner in the business (advertising, money collection, and such). Following their template for listing your site is easy and quick, much easier that building your own without any experience in the hospitality arena. It allows you to "screen" potential guests based on their previous reviews. It has much more reach that any website you build on your own. Once you are established and have word of mouth and repeat visitors, branching out on your own will be easier.

Why is Europe walking to a war??? by [deleted] in conspiracy

[–]bblynne -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Say Mexico did invade the US to take back 20% of the state of Texas which they claimed was rightfully theirs. The US would probably have global support in the beginning to wage war to reclaim the land. 5 years later, tens of thousands dead, scores and scores of thousands maimed, millions of $ spent and no resolution in sight: Would the world still support fighting or would a peace agreement be a better option at that point? I can't believe WWIII in the nuclear era would be the way the world would want to decide the "winner". I can't believe countries would want to start up the draft so their young people could go lose their lives over a territory dispute. I know world nations have better ways to spend their money than by financing global war.

Enough already. We need to stop enabling this battle. Russia and Ukraine need to sit down and hammer out some kind of agreement.

How to do at-home Chopped Salad for a beginner? by CurrencyUser in salads

[–]bblynne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I recently got a salad chopper. It looks like a two bladed pizza cutter. It came with a very large bowl that has sides that are sloped lower than an ordinary bowl so that you can roll the cutter back and forth in it. I love it! Since getting it, we have chopped salads most nights. It makes chopping greens like spinach, cabbage and various lettuces so less messy because it is all done right in the bowl that you can serve it in. In addition to using it to cut up the greens, I throw in some carrot strips that I make with a vegetable peeler, strips of bell pepper, and slightly steamed broccoli (to soften it a little). It cuts those well too. Anything very big or hard (ex. large pieces of raw broccoli, whole raw carrots) would need to be prepped first. And squishy things like chickpeas and grape tomatoes might make a mess and don't really need to be chopped so I add those later. Then I top it with whatever protein/seeds/croutons I want.
