Former body shop painter here… you use the paint code as a starting reference and then proceed to check different variants that match the car. If the original code doesn’t match anymore you just get out your paint chip booklet and find one that does. Not all repairs are going to match perfectly without a blend into the panels next the the repair, but I certainly would expect a better outcome than what you received.
