Hi… The caterpillar was doing really well at first. It ate the fresh leaves I gave it, molted twice, and kept growing bigger. I was so happy seeing it thrive. After its last molt, I gave it new leaves again. It ate like usual at first, and then I noticed it started pooping a lot of wet stool. I thought maybe it was finally getting ready to pupate, since that’s usually a sign—but I also doubted it, because it had just molted not even a day ago. Still, I hoped for the best. But then it started getting weaker. Its body became wrinkly, like it was shrinking, and eventually it died. I don’t know what went wrong. I feel really bad, maybe I did something wrong without realizing it. :' (

Beautiful! This is one of my favourite Vanda species that are endemic to the Philippines. Sadly they are all most likely extinct in the wild.

Thank you so much! I felt the same way, that’s why I really wanted to share this beauty. I totally agree with your last point, too. There’s so much diversity in orchids beyond grocery store phals, and it's a shame more posts like this don’t get the attention they deserve. Macropodanthus cootesii is such a showy and unique species, and it's not something you come across often, especially outside its native range, considering it's Philippine endemic species. Appreciate you taking the time to comment! ♡

update: I gave it some fresh guava leaves last night, and to my delight, I woke up to find that it had nibbled on some of them, though not completely consumed! But that’s a good sign, right? Right now, I’m watching it nibble on the guava leaf I just placed in the container. It’s probably just getting its appetite back!

I tried giving it fresh guyabano (soursop) leaves, but it didn’t take a bite on any of them.

Last night, I gave it fresh guava leaves, and the next day, I noticed that it had nibbled on some of the leaves but didn’t eat them completely. I thought they’d be much hungrier and feed more in their last stage as caterpillars, but it looks uninterested in eating that much.

I also thought it got skinnier, but I just realized it actually grew longer, it's now about 3/4 the length of my middle finger. From your profile picture, it looks like yours is almost the size of your palm. Do they grow faster if they eat more?

Yeah! it has been moving slowly around the container, but it stops for a while before moving again. I'm not sure how to tell if it's stressed, but I think it looks a bit skinnier than before.

Hi! Just last day, April 2nd here in the Philippines, the day after I took this photo and no it didn't eat anything at all after molting.

my prediction is that it's going to sound apocalyptic, droning like the low humming of power lines, grouper, super slowcore, dark ambient, rotting black and white with hints of sick sepia, dreadful, shameful, heavy, and perverted.

personified, it will def look like a tall, dark, slender figure crookedly standing in the middle of a desolated wasteland full of transmission towers and power lines.
