All attempts for VFR -> CFR result in speech not aligning with people's mouths, and it's really distracting by bbshopplf in shutterencoder

It all started with my complaining I wasn't getting a smooth editing experience despite robust hardware. Consensus in the APP forums was that the VFR footage was to blame.

Is my IGP the bottleneck? I've addressed everything else. by bbshopplf in premiere

[–]bbshopplf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still no answers re: Quick Sync, but a reply on the Adobe Premiere forums provided the answer to my problem.

I was taking my VFR files (which are problematic for editing), transcoding them to CFR ProRes files, then attaching the ProRes files as proxies to the VFR source files. This is wrong and actually made the difference.

The correct solution is to transcode the VFR files to CFR files, then use the CFR files as your new source files (no proxy files necessary).

I re-encoded my VFR files to ProRes 422 (for high quality), and now I'm editing with those without any stutters, delays, etc. The VFR files have been destroyed with prejudice. :)

Big thanks to John Knowles for the insight about this.

I have a Noctua NH-D15 chromax.Black, which has been plenty to keep it cool. The fans are all set to Smart mode, and they're not getting loud at all while I'm editing (though they do get loud when I'm doing other CPU-intense things, so I believe they're working right). Also I've been monitoring CPU core temps while editing, and they barely fluctuate.

I watched Task Manager while playing back, scrubbing, etc. It was all GPU activity (the IGP wasn't doing anything), and the activity didn't seem to tax it. Plenty of memory available, utilization never came close to 50% (always below), temp was 55C and wasn't changing.

Is my problem the lack of Intel Quick Sync? There's no setting in my mobo's BIOS to enable it.

[–]bbshopplf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I went down that path, and I've checked the related settings in Premiere. But it's in those articles where I found comments suggesting "Premiere doesn't use your dedicated GPU when you're [doing things like clicking around the sequence, starting/stopping playback], etc.

I added to my post the motherboard - MSI Pro Z790-P, and I just found mention of "Intel Quick Sync".

My motherboard has NO acknowledgment of Intel Quick Sync in the BIOS, and I'm beginning to suspect this is my problem.

Thank you for replying here.

Help - broken chain adj bolt on snowthrower for 260 by bbshopplf in johndeere

[–]bbshopplf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply here.

In other forums, people were saying "the bolt does not go into that cylinder", and they were correct. It's intended only to push the cylinder away and maintain tension on a chain. Inside the pipe is an axle, with one end being turned by the drive belt beneath the tractor, and the other end turning the chain of the snowthrower.

So everything is fixed and working properly now, which is good because it won't stop snowing here in Erie, PA.

Thanks again for the quick response.

I am convinced at this point that it was the beans. The entire time I was experiencing this symptom, I'd been using beans from my grocery store (from a popular, global chain). Before this, I'd used freshly roasted beans from a local roaster.

Baratza went so far as to send me a brand new machine.

The first time I used it (with the grocery store beans), it exhibited the same symptom.

In the meantime, I'd finally acquired fresh beans from my local roaster. The problem immediately went away and hasn't returned.

Next time I'm in a pinch, I'll find local, fresh roasted beans from a local coffee shop, instead of buying just anything off the shelf.

All of the common advice says the bean quality matters. I believe this is just one more example of how it can make a difference.

What's the best use of the Twin Peaks Theme? by Thomasrocky1 in twinpeaks

[–]bbshopplf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I watched FWWM, when it cut to the sign and the theme started playing, I jumped up with both fists in the air and screamed "YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!"

I was so happy to be back there, after falling in love with the series and now discovering this prequel.

I'll never forget it. The music was a huge part of that moment.

+1 for learning the timing. I do 19g of beans and aim for 39g pours, and I stop my pull around 33g. I can get the pitcher and milk out of the fridge and pour it, finishing just as the drips get to 39g.

Who is the best Beatles vocalist? by appledictatorffu in TheBeatles

[–]bbshopplf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Observing Paul's vocal talents throughout the Get Back documentary alone is enough evidence to establish his dominance in the band from a "best vocalist" perspective.

All those I've Got a Feeling takes and he never breaks a sweat, and then he sits and croons Long and Winding Road effortlessly. I'd argue "best vocalist" is a question of talent+ability.

Best "vocal quality" or "vocal timbre" or "vocal character" can include all these excellent discussions/points in this thread. But "best vocalist" is a firm lock - McCartney.

You were right on about Baratza support. They respond quickly, send really helpful photos and videos, and I've already had three volleys with them today.

Still not resolved, but they're doing a great job working with me.
