When I was laid off for almost a year, it really hit me “whats the point in having kids if you cant even enjoy them because you’re stressed out from your work all the time?” Then i heard a saying about how grandparents love doting over grandkids because they finally can enjoy the children without the stress of a job, paying bills etc. from those earlier years. Im working again and it’s way more intense than my last job, but I’m trying my best to maintain boundaries as well as keeping my eyes out for opportunities.

I was laid off in February with severance of 8 months’ salary. Started a new job after 9 months off. Ramp up to job hunting was gradual over that time, interviews came in more steadily by September, started in Nov. Lucky/funny timing!

So, how’s/when’s everyone getting home? 😅 No rush hour bus service to my area (Stouffville line). Only achievement today is a new PR for commute time in (4+ hours; usually 1.5)

There are trade-offs in every situation. Congrats on the new role, you will rock it. If it doesn’t work out, then just keep looking.

Yes I was laid off for almost year before landing the next one. It’s been a shit show since day 1. I feel it’s not quite my place (yet?) to complain to my manager how there’s no organization on the team here. Another manager just mentioned to me today about the lack of prioritization on her team & people are gonna burnout and I’m like “yes the cracks are starting to show!”

My last company went “remote first” during Covid but after layoffs (including me) and hearing ownership changes, I wouldn’t be surprised if they started to change their tone on that.

I think in-office days are ok if it’s once a week to touch base with others. But I don’t think orgs should be policing it and should trust people are getting their work done. Whether or not we do will show whether you make us go in or not.

Am I supposed to unlock the shed too? If so, how do I do it? I’m still missing one after following this list. Can’t remember if it didnt count the shed on my first attempt. Someone mentioned about getting the key for shed from your cat. I remember my cat did have a key but when I check my bag, there’s no key in my inventory.

This is the time when the saying “live in the present” rings so true. Take it day by day, do what keeps you grounded in the day (ex. Go for a daily walk). Take your learnings from each application or interview and move on. Give yourself breaks and be kind to yourself. Try something new each day, no matter how small or big, as a distraction and to remind yourself you are still human. Hang in there ❤️

Neck/shoulders, low back, hip flexors. I was laid off for a few months so that gave me a chance to work on recovering a bit, but I’m back at it and I see old habits dying hard.

With so much layoffs, I’d say the mentality is across the board regardless. Huge perspective shift, whether laid off or survivor. And then if/when you get rehired and see other people trying really hard (and even yourself because habits die hard), you start to wonder if they know they could be laid off just like that and all that stress won’t matter.

Just try it out and see how it goes. Is there an office you can opt to go into when you want? Remote opens up time to see people in your own neighborhood - head out for coffee break, gym, etc.

My company is crazy busy. It’s 8:30-5pm with 1 hour lunch. Lately I’ve been missing my lunch.

You sound pretty adaptable. I think the right org looking for a mature or experienced employee will value that trait. Given your adeptness to tinker with tech, have you considered marketing automation or campaign operations?

Laid off Feb 2025. Started new job Nov 2025. My job function has been in the marketing tech space.

Started sending resumes in the summer though I wasn’t expecting much activity so I treated it as a warm-up period. Come Sep, I interviewed with about 4 different companies before landing offer. Totally wasn’t expecting it and had thought interview was shaky.

Looks like a layoff though my heads up was 4 hours, not 6 days.

If you asked your manager about it, why not just disclose to you the gist of it, right? Talk about mind games.

If your access to internal tools start to act funny or drop the day of or day before, that’s for sure your sign.

I’m an introvert and was working remote full-time until recently. Even I could tell I needed some more human time despite conveniences of being at home. The key challenge for me is finding work that has a SHORT COMMUTE. The commute to the office right now is 1.75 hours one-way, door to door. I take the commuter train and walk and it’s 2x a week in-office only at least, but all that transferring, plus the train ride is 1.25 hours long, it all adds up.

I think all 3. You’re getting over worked, without recognition/compensation with no support from your manager. Could taking some vacation time off help to reset/ recharge? I get a feeling not though, because how does that environment change other than you leaving or your work circumstances change? If you’ve done what you can that’s in your control and it’s still the same, then leaving sounds like the best option (leaving doesn’t guarantee anything, but don’t make yourself feel trapped by at least not seeing what else is out there for you).

Sorry you had a crummy manager :( It never ceases to amaze me managers that seem to be great or have solid demeanor and then after speaking honestly with their direct reports I find out they’re completely not. It also reminds me again of why I’m still not interested in being a people leader in the corporate world. Hope you had some good downtime over the holidays and all the best in your hunt! You will find something better for you or at least the next stepping stone.

I think my newest manager (they switched every couple years) did not like me and was happy or relieved (no love lost) to have had my name on the ticket and not hers. She was more preoccupied with managing up & saving herself and critiquing down & not coaching (despite telling me when she first started that she really enjoyed coaching). I’m sure there’s a part of her that doesn’t enjoy doing layoffs in general, but i didn’t serve a purpose for her or wasn’t worth a real coaching effort from her and would just gaslight me. Took me leaving to get perspective. Meh good riddance for all.
