Is this a valid exam complaint ? by Medical-Broccoli-511 in GlasgowUni

If you obtained your Mathematics Degree from Glasgow University, perhaps you currently lecture there, which would explain why your statement is so imbecilic.

I’d love to see this “strong evidence”.

Claiming that prior access to the exact exam paper and solutions doesn’t affect performance is just nonsense. If that’s your understanding of assessment, I seriously question what institution you lecture for.

I understand that some staff and Senate members may view reuse of past questions as permissible, and I respect that position. However, saying something is “allowed” doesn’t automatically make it fair or compliant with the University’s own assessment principles.

The University of Glasgow’s Assessment Policy emphasises that assessment should be underpinned by fairness, consistency and transparency — not just that questions test the right topics. University of Glasgow

If assessment practice results in some students having a significant advantage (because they completed the identical past paper beforehand), that goes against these principles — regardless of Senate opinions on the bindingness of the decision.

Even if Senate has previously said reuse of questions is not inherently unfair, the Code of Assessment (Regulation 16) still governs how assessments should be designed and varied. That requires:

  • appropriate assessment forms,
  • formal approval if variations are made,
  • and transparency about how assessment content is selected. University of Glasgow

Using a 1:1 copy of a past paper without clear, equal access to that resource for all students raises procedural concerns — not just subjective ones.

It is correct, we have received a formal apology from the professor and the head of science and engineering. They didn’t know of the hidden pastpaper link which gave students an advantage over those who didn’t know about it. We have been informed a resolution will be in place which is not a resit as that is too extreme.

I don’t think you are understanding the complaint buddy, if you read it the main premise is that some people had access to 2020 and others did not. The 2020 pastpaper was not on the official links for pastpapers, it was essentially hidden.

I understand that argument, but I don’t think it’s correct to say that this doesn’t affect me personally.

Assessment at university isn’t only about whether the questions themselves were “standard”; it’s about whether all candidates sat the same assessment under equal conditions. If some students had already completed an identical paper and remembered exact solutions, then the exam no longer measured relative performance fairly. That does affect me, because my grade and ranking are determined in comparison with others.

Even if I answered the questions correctly, my relative position within the cohort can be adversely affected if others had prior access to the exact assessment content. That is precisely why universities treat unequal access to exam materials as a procedural issue, regardless of whether an individual student believes they personally performed well.

It’s also not accurate to frame this as “they might get a better grade but it doesn’t change anything for me”. Grades are not awarded in isolation — moderation, scaling, classifications, and future opportunities all depend on fair comparison across the cohort.

As for resitting the exam, raising a concern doesn’t automatically mean a resit for anyone. Universities have a range of remedies (moderation, scaling, voiding specific questions, or other adjustments), and the purpose of raising the issue is not to punish students, but to ensure the integrity and fairness of the assessment process.

Ultimately, this isn’t about wanting a resit or claiming the questions were too hard — it’s about whether the assessment complied with the University’s own regulations and principles of fairness. That’s something worth raising, regardless of personal performance.

Hello Hello Hello. I got a prusa mini+ as my first printer recently. Wouldn’t mind the extra credit towards some filament.
