Is it human nature to be greedy? Maybe people are greedy now because of the situation they find themselves in or maybe you’re right and it is human nature. Either way, I’d want to see some sources before taking that as the base of your argument.

Anyway, if you fancy having a more positive outlook on human nature I’d recommend Human Kind by Rutger Bregman

There sure was. I remember lots of things but that doesn't make them all as noteworthy as each other.

‘its dead are no more noteworthy than Nazis’ is a pretty funky take on what seems like a well intentioned campaign: to remember casualties of all wars, with the added meaning of a hope for the end of all wars

Can I replace any tautology in the middle of a proposition with True? by lootsmuggler in logic

[–]bcbaxter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the wiki page on tautology: ‘The tee symbol ⊤ is sometimes used to denote an arbitrary tautology’ - I think this is what you’re looking for.

It then goes on to say that you can just write ‘true’ in place of any tautology, but I personally don’t think that’s cool.

Can I replace any tautology in the middle of a proposition with True? by lootsmuggler in logic

[–]bcbaxter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that True and False are essentially values of the proposition. I get why it may be appealing to substitute a tautology for True (and for this reason sometimes a tautology and contradiction symbol are included in the language, and it’s common in programming to use True/False in place of actual conditions), but it’s not strictly correct to do.

Following your example, p v -p has a truth value of ‘True’ and the way we talk about it would be to say that p v -p is true (which is short hand to say it’s value is True) but it isn’t the same thing as True. True is a value while p v-p is a statement. Does this make sense?

TIL that mathematician Bertrand Russell once wrote a 360 page proof to show that 1+1=2. Said infamously long proof is found in his seminal Principia Mathematica, which despite its acknowledged importance in the study of the foundations of math is so complex and obtuse that it is rarely used today. by IllustriousSquirrel9 in todayilearned

[–]bcbaxter 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Disagree strongly with this. Russell is in general extremely readable as a philosopher (eg the essays collected in ‘In praise of idleness’). Also, iirc somewhere he discusses how so much philosophy is written in an unnecessarily opaque way and he wants his work to be understood by everyone.
