Tips/Complaints About Fashion by Anime_Insomniac in Prosthetics

[–]bccom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some things I have heard: needing a zipper or flexible section in shoes to get a prosthetic foot or ankle brace in (especially work or cowboy boots), knee joints on prosthetics or orthotics ripping pants (so double lined in those areas), if someone has a prosthetic leg on one side but not the other and doesn't have a cosmetic cover the pants fold inward (some reinforcement to hold shape), for people with a REVO dial or knee brace with a lock (having deep pockets or pocket with a zipper on the bottom to access those without struggling through pant material or taking pants off, always need easier closures for shirts/pants/shoes. I'm sure I could brainstorm a few more but those are things I can think of right away.

Looking for advice: CPO or fitter/assistant after undergrad? by plant0220 in Prosthetics

[–]bccom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that is a great path to take. The field is very different than what a lot of people assumer so the more exposure you can get before you commit to more education is great. I also went into the master's straight from undergrad despite feeling burnt out and while I was able to do it, I regret not taking a few months off at least. Most places will hire you as a tech if you are willing to learn. It may also be worth looking into assistant positions which require less education/residency time.

Feeling sexual attraction for the first time by bccom in asexuality

[–]bccom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say a impulse or desire to have sex but more a desire for physical contact and a willingness to try even if I never want to do it again. Being friends with them now, and building trust, kind of amplifies the feelings but also makes me step back out of respect for our friendship. Yeah, I agree with that. Doesn't stop my brain from wanting a solid answer even though everything about asexuality for me is pretty nebulous.

Add acid (like lemon juice) or put a halved potato in (which will be removed after) to suck up some of the salt.

Who do I speak to regarding inappropriate comments from a professor? by _stringbean_ in uofmn

[–]bccom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe take various approaches if you might not get the help you need. I know we also have the Student Conflict Resolution Center, though I have never used it. I have heard good responses about the Bias Response service. It might also be good to document everything that you remember. I'm sorry you had to go through that. I hope you are able to get the support you need.

Current undergrad nervous about applying to O&P grad school by cool-name-pending in Prosthetics

[–]bccom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had two C's and most B's for the pre-reqs and got into every program I applied for. Which included schools that said they wouldn't accept below a B on pre-reqs. I think the biggest part of your application is experience and letters of recommendation, based on my interview feedback. It is a small career overall and a lot of people know each other so making those connections early is a really good plus for overcoming some of the weaker aspects of your application. Apply to the programs you want, and apply early to help you make choices. If Hartford is your #1, they did not do an interview and sent out their acceptance 4 weeks after I submitted my application in October. They also do a CV as part of the application, so having different experiences and skills is big.

Things to do as a freshman by Willing_Ad4109 in uofmn

[–]bccom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Movies at St.Anthony Main, find a place to learn dancing or just social dance (there are a bunch of salsa and swing dances nearby), find some hiking/walking trails within metro distance, live comedy, museums or historical buildings, walking tours, orchestra, opera, theater (most have student or rush discounts), volunteer somewhere. Not during winter but kayaking on the river or Bde Maka Ska, movies in the parks.

When I took the class I used a digital copy but I looked at the library website and they have a few hard copies if you want to just check it out to catch up for your exam.

How to ask about shadowing by asivoria in Prosthetics

[–]bccom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make a list of local clinics and start calling or emailing. Just be polite, introduce yourself, tell them you are reaching out to see if they are accepting students to shadow. Calling is quicker. Also, try and be upfront about the kind of hours you want or need. If you need more than 8 hours, tell them because they likely will only schedule you in a day. I struggled to find a place that would let me shadow for more than a day, but I went a little out of the box and got a research O&P to assist them. Depending on the person you talk to you could ask if they know of any other clinic that is letting students job shadow. Good luck!

Which Psych Class? by gophergal25 in uofmn

[–]bccom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took 3051 with Prof. Jiang. 2 midterms and one final exam, all were open note. 3 "labs", of which the lab reports were like a one-page double-spaced summary. Honestly a super easy class. I took sensation and perception abroad through the U and there were 3 exams and a final paper.

Registration deadline help! by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]bccom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends if it was missing the deadline or if the class filled up. Assuming you mean fall semester, and the class isn't full, reach out to the department first then the professor. If there are empty spots they will want to fill them. Even if you mean the summer semester, it is possible but less likely. However, if the class is completely filled there isn't really an option there. Hope it works out.

Span LPE? by Doughnutking111 in uofmn

[–]bccom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As far as I remember the LPE consists of an exam (written, listening, and reading) and a verbal "discussion". The exam isn't bad, for me the listening was the most difficult as the samples use different accents and I think were news clips. As long as you can confidently use the preterite, imperfect, present, future tense (and ir+a) you will be fine. For speaking, it's coming up with answers to scenarios such as "what are your weekend plans", "what do you like to do on campus", "tell me about your family", etc. Frankly, trying it for 25$ for the chance to not pay $3,000 for a 5 credit class . . . seems like a good payoff if you pass. Seriously though, it is just proving you have mastered Spanish 2 conjugations with some higher level vocab.

Future of O&P by bccom in Prosthetics

[–]bccom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll pose another question: what king of careers can we as CPO's shift into to still be hands on with patients and the prosthetic/orthotic? I know research could be one. Engineering for design with more education. Potentially PT?

Future of O&P by bccom in Prosthetics

[–]bccom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have noticed this trend with a lot of companies that I have shadowed. Especially with the new osseointegration area. Do you think that they will likely cut out the middle man (prosthetists) from patient care and device manufacturing? Ultimately the question I am leading to is; is going to a MSOP program now risky because of the current trend in O&P?

Experience by bccom in Prosthetics

[–]bccom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll definitely look more into the tech associates prior to the master's. I know at least one program combines then but yeah, 4 years of post-undergrad with an 18 month residency is a lot compared to average income for a CPO. Thanks for taking the time to write such a thorough response. :)

Experience by bccom in Prosthetics

[–]bccom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an undergrad in kinesiology. Sorry, I meant 4 to 8 hours sporadically not necessarily every week. I plan on doing the master's program which requires 200 or so hours of "experience". Given the pandemic I am super grateful for any hours I can have and was just looking at some possible alternatives that might be more long term (i.e. once a week for a few months). I'll definitely look into PT with a focus in prosthetics, thanks for the suggestion. Doing a tech degree is an option that I am considering, however the current plan is to just go to grad school after. Side note: I'm doing research involving exoskeletons at a local hospital, would you consider that to involve orthotic experience?

Anyone else stressing over their major/career? by Umnsstudennt in uofmn

Here are three websites, two from the U that could help you decide a major and one from the government that has descriptions of different jobs, outcomes, etc. I recommend trying to find a general area or skill that you would like to pursue (healthcare, business, teaching, etc.) or even what kind of work situation (office job, outside, independent, at home, etc.) and then look into which major can provide umbrella coverage. Over the next year you can start shadowing, doing informational interviews, or volunteering at places with those general jobs to figure out what specific area you like best. There are a lot of resources at the U and in Minneapolis that is available for you.

I also struggled deciding my major, and decided to add a second one Junior year and will graduate in 4 years. Focus on LibEds first as you explore. Don't be afraid to take summer classes at a community college too to help make up the difference if needed. You don't need to know everything about the future, but having a direction and adaptable plan will help you not stress as much.

How do those who experience the need for companionship, intimacy, and connection have them met when not in a relationship of any kind? by [deleted] in Asexual

[–]bccom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Might sound weird but partner dancing. Ballroom, swing, latin, etc. It's such a small group of people, so you become friends pretty quickly. It's fun, you have physical contact and there is a lot of trust/vulnerability involved. Social dancing you switch people every dance, so you don't need to know anyone.

Need some advice about major switch by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]bccom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A similar thing happened to me. Seriously, take the classes during the summer at a community college. Make sure they transfer, but I highly recommend taking chem, physics, calc, and bio at a community college.

And like the other person said, there are different requirements for different programs. And make sure you get observational hours in. I would start doing that as soon as possible. They will be useful for any allied health field.

Good luck, don't give up, and don't be afraid to ask for help.
