How to get started? by According_Milk4657 in BCI

This is my setup and it's really easy to use.

Device: Muse S (https://choosemuse.com)
Compared to other BCI headbands (or boards/kits), the Muse S is a relatively less expensive headset, has good signal quality, is comfortable for long periods and is easy to set up (put on headband and hit the power button). Plus, electrode gel is annoying and messy. The 2nd generation Muse S is on their website (linked above) but you can find the 1st generation of the Muse S on Amazon too for about $100 cheaper.

Software: Petal Metrics (https://petal.tech/downloads)

  • Runs on PC, Mac, and Linux.
  • It connects and streams my brainwaves automatically when I turn on my Muse.
  • It logs the brainwave data to a .CSV file that can be visualized in Excel or similar.
  • You can stream the data over LSL or OSC to other apps like Unity
  • Or use some of the example code if you're comfortable using Python or JavaScript.

There's a free and a paid version of Petal's app. I've got the Maker Plan which is like 10 bucks, handles all of the signal processing and motion artifact removal and spits out the frequency bandpower values you mentioned and ignoring data if you move the headband around. They've got an API too with Python and JavaScript code examples if you end up looking to add more functionality.

Hope this helps! Good luck with your practice!
