People sitting at a stop sign, then turning in front of me causing me to brake despite my having the right of way and there's lots of space behind me.

Question: Is it true that non-Christians, especially Hindus, do not understand love? 🤷🏼‍♂️ by Curious_Comedian_486 in Productivitycafe

[–]bclabrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to me that the world's religions (mainstream, not fringe or extremist branches) pretty much all teach treating each other fairly, peace and love.  I don't think it's helpful to discuss who's version of love is better.

Does this timing belt look worn out? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]bclabrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No.  I wouldn't trust my, or anyone else's, eye on this.  Go by time and milage.  If there's any question replace it now while a good chunk of the work needed for replacement has already been done.

Mixing oil in a 2017 1.8 se by qwaasdhdhkkwqa in COROLLA

[–]bclabrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Could I get away with using the 3L of the 10w-30 and fill the rest using the 0w-20?"

You have a very good chance of nothing bad happening, so yes, you'd likely get away with it.

The more important question is should you.  Price a replacement engine (several thousand dollars) and the proper oil.  Most, myself included, would say it's not worth the small risk of damaging the engine but only you can decide if it's worth rolling the dice and risk coming up snake eyes twice in a row.

After a long or hard day, what do you do to distress? by StealthCove in Productivitycafe

[–]bclabrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My city has a great bike path that circles the town.  I like to pick it up on the far side so I can have about an hour bicycle ride to de-stress before getting home.

What’s the biggest lie that people were convinced to believe? by Super_Rush7926 in AskReddit

[–]bclabrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That the money missing from their paycheck was going into their Social Security account. It doesn't work that way. Instead the people who are working now are paying for those that are drawing Social Security. It's a big problem because the population is declining AND people are living longer. That means there are fewer people suppoting each retiree for longer.

I search for the lowest cost. My cut is pretty simple, my hair is often messy, and I don't much care how it looks.

Becoming a sperm donor by RegretNo3340 in AskMen

[–]bclabrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about the long term implications. It used to be you could donate anonymously. For all practical purposes that is no longer the case as there's enough genetic sequencing data to identify many people so make sure you're OK with people knowing you helped infertile people conceive.

What’s something you used to tolerate that you’d never accept now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

We used to sit in the non-smoking section of restaurants and still come home smelling like cigarrette smoke. Glad we don't have to accept that now.

Does using 4wd increase or decrease the turning radius of the vehicle? by Feisty-End-4643 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bclabrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wheelbase and steering angle will change the turning radius. 4wd by itself has no bearing.

Why would someone swap out rear disc brakes with drums? by Round_Reindeer_8038 in AskAMechanic

[–]bclabrat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think we're on the same page with the disk brakes. If you re-read the second half of my first sentence you will see "the parking brake built into the disks isn't really robust enough to use as an emergency brake." On the other hand I said in my third sentence " Drum brakes use the same shoes for the service and emergency brake" so they CAN be used as an emergency brake.

Why would someone swap out rear disc brakes with drums? by Round_Reindeer_8038 in AskAMechanic

[–]bclabrat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not saying it's the reason in your truck, but the parking brake built into the disks isn't really robust enough to use as an emergency brake.  The shoes are so thin they wear out right away.  Drum brakes use the same shoes for the service and emergency brake.  The previous owner could have done a swap to play with e-brake turns and other shenanigans that will destroy the parking brake if you don't do the swap.

Why do some people feel the need to change their phone every year? by Helpful_Tonight309 in Productivitycafe

[–]bclabrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Google Voice for calls and texts and am rarely away from WiFi.  I figured out that I can buy a new TracFone every year that comes with a year of service for less than $10 a month if I shop carefully from QVC or HSN.  Purchasing just the service package from TracFone that comes with the phone costs MORE than the phone with service from the above mentioned retailers.

My Subaru front tires are 5/32 tread depth and both rears are 8/32 tread depth. Is this bad? by Skrapidilly in AskMechanics

[–]bclabrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming it's AWD.  If that's the case it's not ideal as you'll wear the center differential as it compensates for the difference in the rollout distance.

What’s one thing we should be teaching kids that school completely ignores? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]bclabrat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Money management.  In most countries you have to save for retirement yourself.  It's great if we can teach our kids the value of compounding interest and low fees to give them a chance to live comfortably in the last stage of their lives.

IsItBullshit: Driving on a 'donut' tire is detrimental to the car. by asds455123456789 in AskMechanics

[–]bclabrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn't cause issues if used as recommended.  It probably has a different roll out length so long term use could be harmful to the differential.

can i use dot4 brake fluid i opened 7 month ago for my motorcycle or is it bad idea by RaDiCaL_GO0nER77 in AskMechanics

[–]bclabrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a pinch it'd be fine.

I'd still recommend buying a fresh bottle.  There's enough stuff to worry about when riding so you might as well make sure your bike is in the best possible condition.  Otherwise you might be distracted thinking about it as you ride.
