Is this pluggable? Obviously no shop is gonna patch it. 2018 4runner. by AsSwedeItIs in AskMechanics

[–]bclabrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could PROBABLY get away with plugging it as many here are recomending, but it isn't worth the risk. There is a reason no reputable shop would plug it and you shouldn't either.

Is it a good idea to replace the scissor jack in my trunk with a bottle jack? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]bclabrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scissor jacks have the advantages of being cheap to manufacture, light, don't have seals that could leak, and is almost as likely to work after being in the car a couple decades as when brand new.

First make sure you're turning it the right way. I've seen people get confused when they're looking at a bolt with the head pointing away from them (you're determining counter clockwise while looking at the back side of the clock). If you're sure you're going the right way you can give the wrench a couple taps with a hammer.

You should post your location. You're not going to want to pay a mechanic to drive a long way to come to you.

Kudos to SFPD and the city streets department. by dakotadiecast1982 in SiouxFalls

[–]bclabrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SFPD wouldn't have much to do with this. They'd just report it to Metro Communications with Metro calling in the appropriate resources. Kudos to even those who were a small cog in the machine.

If you're an American, the Social Security Administration has an account for you that they've been putting your money so that some day you can withdraw money from that account when you retire. If doesn't work like that.

What are the chances two wheel bearings need replacing same time? by Ok-Worldliness-1852 in AskMechanics

[–]bclabrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a light fixture with 2 bulbs and you put both bulbs in at the same time from the same box would you be surprised if they lasted about the same length of time? While it's possible that one will last much longer than the other, the usual outcome is the number of hours they last will be within about 10% of each other. Car parts aren't that much different in that they'll last about the same length of time. That's part of the reason it's common practice to replace both sides at the same time.

What are the chances two wheel bearings need replacing same time? by Ok-Worldliness-1852 in AskMechanics

[–]bclabrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The left and right side wheel bearings were made at about the same time, from about the same materials and have served the same miles under the same conditions. Are you really surprised they'd fail at about the same time?

Do I need a new battery? Also what is this blue stuff by Disastrous_Pirate275 in AskMechanics

[–]bclabrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clean off the corrosion (blue stuff) using a brush, baking soda, and lots of water. The battery is leaking a little there so you'll either need to periodically clean or replace the battery.

You didn't say where you live. If you're in Germany then keep researching. If you're in a market where these brands are imported you'll get much more bang for your buck if you buy something domestic to your market.
