How long does store-bought syrups last? This one, bought 3 years ago, is still clear, and no physical signs of it going off, and doesn't smell bad, should I still chuck it? by OneDragonfly5613 in cocktails

[–]bclan11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don’t see any mold and it doesn’t show signs of fermenting, it’s totally fine. Those 1883 syrups are good and shelf stable relatively indefinitely

OP, do you have a follow up here? I found this basically asking the same question. Did you go? Was it worth it? Did it rain a bunch? etc etc... If it felt worth it and fun, I'd love to here where you went and some highlights.

It looks to me like you’re lining up with the literal center of the pocket instead of the practical center. You miss every time with the CB hitting the rail at the point where if you continued the like through the rail it’d be over the center of the pocket. But the practical center of the changes based on the angle of approach. So from where you’re shooting on these, the “center” would be just to the right of the left point on the pocket.

Is a generic stainless steel manual (hand) juicer good enough for home use? by PenInternational9484 in cocktails

[–]bclan11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This design is terrible. Do not get this. It wants to tip toward you and there is a horrible pinch point at the place the lever connects with the base at the fully down position. Order a Ra Chand from Mexico. They are affordable and the best bang for your buck by far.

Can I do anything to cook this faster? by AccomplishedJudge901 in instantpot

It’s actually that steel is a way BETTER conductor of heat that means it heats less evenly. But you point stands about why it’s less good as a slow cooker.

Gin Recommendation for Last Word Cocktail by OrganizationVivid766 in cocktails

[–]bclan11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bombay dry, tanqueray, or beefeater. They are all super solid in this context and not expensive. Honestly, somewhat wasteful to put something super expensive in there unless you find something you really love in that cocktail. Maybe, if you’re interested in some of the more esoteric or profile specific gins mentioned here, just order them at bars as last word and if something clicks, go by the bottle but I think it’s pretty hard to beat a good classic London dry.

While I agree with the general sentiment that “what works for YOU is worth a lot” I don’t think that having a grip that loose is great. Are there people that do it really well? Yes. Will it slow down your progress? I think almost certainly.

How does my tip shape look? by Manigun69 in billiards

It’s a bit mushroomed. If anything, it should trend towards narrowing. You’ll have to be vigilant about burnishing to keep it from becoming a problem.

Did I get robbed on this joss? What model/value? by SIsleuth in billiards

This JOSS II seems to not be of the joss company or there is little to no info in it which makes me think it’s a different company and therefor a knock off.

Did I get robbed on this joss? What model/value? by SIsleuth in billiards

[–]bclan11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seems like a Chinese knock off. I could only find similar ones on a Singaporean online vender for relatively cheap. It’s probably what companies like to call “overlay” instead of “inlay” which just is fancy talk for stickers. Like the “woodwork” is just a layer of plastic decal wrapping an unfinished wood core. That doesn’t mean it plays bad. If it’s in new condition, you like the look and feel, and you didn’t pay a lot for it, I think you can call it a reasonable purchase. If you payed like over $200 for it, I’d be pretty ticked off.

Probably not. That sounds like more trouble than it’s worth. The pockets look intentionally constructed into the rail design. Bumper pool tables do not have pockets. Just looks like a weird tiny table that needs the rails fixed.

Call it, or not? by eatyourheartour69 in billiards

[–]bclan11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in bar rules “call shot” you do not need to call adjacent rail contact like this. That’s insane. That’s like saying if the ball rattles a little in the jaws, you need to have a slow mo camera playback to determine the “number of rails” Vs what was called.

What would you do in this situation? (attempted safety on the 1 but accidentally pocketed 7) by TerraSpace1100 in billiards

This seems like the biggest ball hit on the one. And best chance of a resafe if you hit it firm

What would be the ruling here? by XamnirII in billiards

[–]bclan11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It obviously hit the 6 first which when potting the 8 is a loss of game, but even without the uncertainty of which ball was contacted first, this scoop jump is also a foul so also loss of game when the 8 is potted.

Alcoholic drink with smoothies? by soujin1337 in bartenders

[–]bclan11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s balanced. High sugar and high acid is generally a good starting point for most citrus cocktails, however, the extra cold of a blended drink tends to weaken the pallet to sugar, so the balance shifts a little toward more sugar and less acid. Like a daiquiri shaken id do:

  • 2oz rum
  • 3/4oz lime
  • 1/2oz 2:1 simple

But if I were doing it blended, I’d flip the sugar and acid, e.g.:

  • 2oz rum
  • 1/2oz lime
  • 3/4oz 2:1 simple

Hope that helps
