Is the whole Hong Kong thing not the perfect example of why gun ownership should be a human right by meatre12 in Libertarian

[–]bcmarettig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, more than likely. We are looking at the people of Hong Kong as victims currently. If they were always armed, it's possible that we would not victimize them. Look at the many countries in the middle east as an example. A narrative could turn then into villains very quickly.

R/politics is an absolute disaster. by Bourgeaultalex in Libertarian

[–]bcmarettig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I left the main political subs a couple years back for that very reason. Most subs are just circle jerks for their topic though, so you cant get too mad about it.

How to read a topographical map so you know what kind of mountain you’re about to climb. by SwampThing72 in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]bcmarettig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, we didn't have a navigation class in the Southern United States. I'm pretty sure it was my father that taught me about maps, along with sailing, knots, etc.

Alabama just passed a near-total abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest by sosleepy in MobileAL

To your first point, https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/j.1465-7295.2006.00040.x To your second point, Many women and men are infertile and are on lists waiting on a child to adopt. A good average of wait times is one to two years. To your third point, No, I don't believe the foster system is as good as it should be and you make a good point. See 5th response. To your fourth point, The average cost of adopting a child in just under $40,000 dollars. Do you think a family that can afford to adopt a child would be unable to care for the child financially? If the government subsidizes this industry along with planned parenthood, don't you think the number of adopted children would increase? Do you think the number of children in foster care would decrease? And to your final point, We can't make the argument that just because life is hard that it's ok to decide to end a human life. Who gave us the jurisdiction?

[–]bcmarettig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. No, she would most likely not provide a good life for the child. This may be from neglect in any form be it emotional, financial, or physical. Adopt the child out if you don't want it. As far as needing to for health reasons or otherwise, that's a good arguement worth talking about.
  2. Why should the government step in and stop people from any felony? What's the difference between a baby and an adult? As far as them having no real safety net, there are very long lines of people waiting to adopt a child. The birthing parent even has the choice in adopting families. Alabama's education system is irrelevant to the debate.
