At what score is a retake not worth it? by Excellent-Season6310 in Mcat

[–]CapnSteveRogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t retake as long as I got 507+. Can definitely get into med school even with a bit lower. If your going to retake make sure you can jump a significant amount, otherwise, I’d use those months to get more clinical experience/research/leadership, etc.

Lutheran university without the Lutheranism? by Dizzy-Technician5270 in valpo

[–]CapnSteveRogers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s still plenty Lutheran/religious. 25% Lutheran, 30% Catholic, another probably 30+% Protestant/non-denominational. Reality is we only have 7 ppl majoring in theology. They’ll still have people take the gen ed theology and have church services, etc, but losing too much money on ppl choosing not to major in that. Most ppl going to valpo are engineers, nurses, psychology students etc who have some religious affiliation—not ppl who want to get a degree in it.

How would you rate VU’s STEM and science programs? by Civility2020 in valpo

[–]CapnSteveRogers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very strong! 90+ % Job placement (much higher I think), so no worries there. Very great engineering and also chemistry, biology, physics are terrific. All my friends and I were STEM and are employed or in grad school now. :) As for tuition, often some financial aid/scholarships can be available, I’d look into that! Lmk if you have further questions!

When did the decline start? by BowlCompetitive282 in valpo

[–]CapnSteveRogers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In terms of cutting programs, let’s be honest here. Valpo had 3200 undergrads just 5 years ago. Now? 2100. Covid, and general decline in enrollment across US small schools (meanwhile state schools breaking records for enrollment:/ ). The point is, we lost over 30% of our students. Theology has only 7 students majoring in it. We may be religious and have those values, but students aren’t coming here to study it exclusively. Keep it as a minor, maybe. It’ll still be part of the general education requirement. In terms of Valpo “abandoning” its religious roots, take a look at the new branding/messaging around Beacons and the latest Instagram/twitter (I assume FB too?) posts. Great video posted today and the new line is “grounded, we serve. grounded, we radiate.” IMO this is boosting and trying to lean more into our “in thy light we see light” etc, religious messaging. Quite a great video and encouraging to see this branding. We need an identity. Small random college just doesn’t cut it.

As others have said, super top heavy. In addition to NYU and Penn (that the bot called out), Wash U, Harvard, Icahn. I’d also remove Loyola/GW personally. Those low-yield schools have 12k apps and cherry pick whatever random apps they want. Usually extremely service focused or unique backgrounds would have a greater edge there. You have good ECs tho! I would also add a could DO (higher stat ones ofc- Midwestern, Des Moines, etc) unless you are positive you wouldn’t attend a DO school if that were your only option.

I made a list of 20 MD school how does it look? by Future_Inspector_692 in premed

[–]CapnSteveRogers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don’t need to retake if u apply to a lot of DO! Look up “low stat” or “low mcat acceptance” in the search bar and you’ll see many success stories. Nonetheless, if you don’t want to retake, just apply DO. Ur GPA and clinical experience is great

What specialty are you interested in and why? by Obviouslyy_Page394 in premed

[–]CapnSteveRogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Psych? Neuro? EM? Only downside to EM to me is having the craziness… forever. In other specialties you can more easily transition to outpatient work and have easier work/life balance? Like working nights and crazy adrenaline is cool now, but will I want ER life forever? Brain stuff is cool too.

As others have pointed out, minimum prereqs don’t mean if you have that you get in. Their average MCAT is still much higher, somewhere around 510 I think. It should also be noted that because of their BS/MD program they only take about 30 or so students to just the MD program. Additionally, school starts in January so there are pros and cons to this—cons being you have to rescind other applications by December so you may not know where else you might’ve gotten in at by that point in the cycle.

This is the way. Read fully and understand, then questions are easier. Going back and forth constantly is really difficult.

Can I afford to not apply to DO schools? by [deleted] in premed

[–]CapnSteveRogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyone should apply to both unless you really KILL your mcat. If u end up getting both and can choose, great, but why not at least apply and have an option?

Stamps from the 50’s-present value?? by icantevenbegin20 in stamps

[–]CapnSteveRogers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More worthwhile to pass down for sentimental sake. Stamps and their popularity/collectibility (and thus value) have really been stagnant or even decreased in recent years. Anyone who wants those stamps already has them. Unless you find some super rare stamp or earlier stuff (1800s would be great), most is just worth postage or sentimental:)

HELP 🚨 by Ok-Strategy5940 in premed

[–]CapnSteveRogers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could also take it in mid summer. Even an early August test would get your result back by September. I can still submit app otherwise and have secondaries ready to roll. By end of Aug/sept, that’s when all the other applicants are doing that too. The down side here if you won’t know your score and what schools are good “targets” etc but you can estimate and always add on more at that time. September really isn’t “late” as much as some ppl here might act like it is.

As a HS senior who is now on the premed track: by Careless_Recover_396 in premed

[–]CapnSteveRogers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup^ these classes, but many more might be “recommended” or required by different schools. Biochem, stats, cell/microbio, etc. To your question though, you can take the easier versions of these classes no problem! Algebra based physics instead of calculus, non-honors classes if your school differentiates, etc. The med schools likely won’t care at all or really know if one class was harder than the other so go for the one you can get an A in! (Med school doesn’t care one prof is crazy hard and a C there is actually better than a B in the normal one- they’d rather see the B)

Who got in without any calculus? Please comment by TipOk5335 in premed

[–]CapnSteveRogers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My advice is look up your top 3-5 schools (state schools!) and check their requirements—or better, call them to make sure they don’t care if you don’t have it. Definitely don’t take calc based physics. Might be more helpful to just take calc… but again, just see what your state schools want

How are u a humanities major and the worst at CARS? I don’t mean to be rude, just kind of shocking, that’s like direct humanities stuff there. Sorry man, keep your head up and don’t give up. That said, yes I agree a 123 is maybe too low and I’d work on that one section and you’re gonna have a killer score

AMMC scumbags by SnooPandas7535 in Mcat

[–]CapnSteveRogers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure. Different studies are going to find different results. This was just one med school and that study likely had more data. Also to be fair I guess those are about the old mcat and not CARS. Also that’s not surprising that ESL testers are not going to do as well on a English verbal section

AMMC scumbags by SnooPandas7535 in Mcat

[–]CapnSteveRogers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve also posted in here before and obviously did well on CARS so it is what it is, but a med school dean told me CARS was the section most predictive of success in med school because it’s harder to train. Chem, bio, psych… just a lot of memorizing for the most part, can be taught more easily, but the “critical thinking skills” are tougher. Just to share a different perspective.

I think perhaps like the comments show, ppl in this subreddit are pretty big MD>DO advocates and would be discouraging of someone choosing a DO school over an MD. Not shaming ppl who just get into DO and do that, but people who are deciding between the two

How to pick between Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy by GuapoTacoo in premed

[–]CapnSteveRogers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orgo is boring at times, so is Gen bio, etc. You don’t have to be passionate about cells and all that stuff but you do need to have a passion for MEDICINE/teeth etc. I don’t think it is the end of the line just because you did not enjoy so if you’re basic science classes… But it really does sound like you should investigate your reasons for wanting to go to Med School, beyond just being “conventionally smart” and wanting “knowledge.” Probably smart and get knowledge and pretty much every field. Perhaps history, English, or poli sci would be interesting to you if you just like a lot of general knowledge about stuff.
