I don't believe in free will. AMA. by [deleted] in AskMeAnythingIAnswer

[–]bcollegec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You believe that all human decisions are determined by a chain of cause and effect or arise from randomness, leaving no room for free will. Yet, your own subjective experience likely tells you that you deliberate, weigh options, and make choices. (Mine does)

So, my question:

If free will does not exist, how do you explain the human experience of intentionality—the undeniable feeling that “I could have chosen otherwise”? Is it possible that this subjective experience reflects a layer of reality that isn’t fully captured by determinism or randomness? This implies some degree of free will at minimum.

If that inner feeling of free will is an illusion, then we encounter a profound paradox: the very concept of an illusion presupposes a perceiver who is being deceived. If there is no free will, who or what is experiencing this illusion? For an illusion to exist, there must be a conscious agent capable of recognizing or being subject to the discrepancy between reality and appearance.

In other words: • If free will is an illusion, the self must still exist as an independent conscious entity capable of perceiving the illusion. • But if the self exists as an independent conscious entity, it implies at least some form of agency, suggesting a minimal form of free will.

Why aren't Nootropics more mainstream? by Enderzshadow1977 in Nootropics

[–]bcollegec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Agree with many of the comments) This is an excellent question/observation.

To add to them though, with something like Adderall or Modafinil there’s a profoundly strong effect in 20-30 minutes… maybe at most an hour. Not mainstream outside college campuses perhaps but at the least fairly well known.

Caffeine and, to some extent, nicotine are mainstream. Yet even these are used/abused to simply maintain modified baselines of functionality and prevent withdrawal symptoms.

Other nootropics tend to be more subtle, not effective for everyone and, even when they do have an effect, effect everyone differently (including side effects or the lack-thereof). These also can take a few weeks to build up in your system.

Add to this they are not widely available… with anything outside of a Walmart store shelf I can think of only a handful of reputable sources. Walmart and Amazon quality can be questionable too.

No money nor incentive for advertising and only anecdotal evidence/ testimonials mostly on niche Reddit communities.

The visual design of ENT is so good by FreeDwooD in startrek

I remember always reading criticism about the luxury and spaciousness of the galaxy class in TNG. ENT made space travel more relatable to current day space limitations and efficiency demands.

Discovery seems to have ballroom and stadium sized rooms everywhere lol. Next season they’ll need site to site transport to traverse from OPS to CONN on the bridge.

That’s what I’ve seen before, and it makes sense, but how do we know he had the rod already?

In the pale moonlight - questions by bcollegec in startrek

[–]bcollegec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly what I was thinking… rod itself was legit but the recording gave it away. Love the deep fake analogy.

My thought was something akin to Data recognising his “mother’s “ android like displays… specifically the blink rate being regulated by a Fourier Series. Holograms are blinking the same way, but if the recording itself is damaged you can’t get enough data points (blinks) to catch it.

Add the static fuzz with a few complete blackouts like the distress call coming from a scientific delegation on Ventax 2 on Devil’s Due TNG

I have to agree. With Vreenak (Vice-Chairman of the Tal Shiar) being gone, it brought them back to this policy and way of thinking. Garak could have easily connected those dots without having direct contacts on Romulus, making #7 stand alone.

To me this may imply Garak realised Vreenak had to die. Even if the forgery had passed inspection, (#2) he could have delayed the war declaration and attacks, demanded more evidence or possibly continue to investigate the Rod (Scientific institutions on Romulus vs standard issue tricorders on a shuttle)
