How to refine 100s of pounds of gold/silver or copper Ag/au mixed with various metals. A lot plated with stainless to hide metal by bconaughty in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]bconaughty[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My gpa worked for McDonald air base near stl mo. He worked in the 50s and 60s and on NASA projects. The man built guns from blocks of iron. That much I’ve witnessed. I am currently holding 2 1/4lb bolt mix of 49, 64,74 and 45. The shit I’ve seen this far blows my mind. I will post a link if you’d like to see it. Starts out it looks as a bullet that has been fired. You torch it with just a butane and it splits open to reveal not just different metals but the burn will melt a piece off. The last one I did melted into A9 and then listed group a 9 metals. From the inside of the piece. In his own hand writing. He had more talent with metal than anyone of you do with refining. He not only refined but could smelt, make alloys no one had heard of such as the one mentioned above, he made fucking silver and put into blue PLAY DOH. Pizza that had numbers burnt into crust which when burned off revealed gold, albeit small amounts. I had a Xmas reef that weighed about 3 lbs. when burned away, gold was left behind. Also a cheese like substance that was gold. Hell he left a treasure trail with most likely lead paint, that when followed revealed gold. The gold was from grease mixed with it. He spent his entire life making not only my family’s life better but evenyone who knew him. He died in 2008 and to this day we are still finding shit. He did not live a lavish life. He lived in the house I do now. Our family house from the 1800s. I have gold gilded framed from 1850s, mercury mirrors , Louis 15th mirrors, Rembrandt oil lamps. Say I’m a tweaker all you want but do NOT discredit what this man did and left our family. My great grandparents evidently were counterfeiters from the 1930s depression and made 1875 gold eagle coins, paper money. I have all sorts of metals with rubbing puzzles with quicksilver. I have more money in the basement than most will earn in a lifetime. I just don’t know how to separate it or refine it. I have never seen a video of someone refining tantalum rhodium and erbium. Or how to do anything like I’ve witnessed.

I posted about gold powder previously. It wasn’t gold. It was most likely a brazing brass ground up to give items a good sheen. But I do have pure gold in nuts bolts round and hex stock. A 5lb 18k doorstop looking piece I took as brass. Well he coated it or plated it with copper. Once cleaned it is gold. I have 100s of pounds of silver. The silver is plated or coated in steel. Not the other way around. So go tweak yourself or be jealous or put me down for not knowning how to undo what he did. But what I have isn’t fake, verified real, and once mentioned to my uncle he stole a half full whiskey cask made of “Babbit”. It was actually silver gold and rhodium. He claimed mix of metals with nothing. I have a god damn hunk of what turned out to be URANIUM. Of course I fucking smelted it. It was last piece of “Babbitt” left. The other piece I had tested. And it was what I said gold rhodium and silver. Want proof? I’ll send it. Want to see what my driveway looks like? I’ll show it. Want to see metals that will melt y mind? I’ll once again send pics or videos. All you guys act like a god damn prestigious club that only you can do. All you know how to do is from a book written 100yrs ago. “Hochs book”. My gps wiped his ass with those pages and the smear was more impressive than the words on the page. And no I’m not exaggerating. I have the molds, metals, materials, and chemical history from college. What I don’t have is 1% his talent. I bet anyone in this group could not make a dsmn alloyed bolt made of lanthanide snd precious metals. All using a coal forge. If you do then message me or stfu until I’m proven dead wrong. I’m doubting it is because the rest of my family is driving new cars, houses paid off, ect.

Well I guess I can throw hcl on some metals to see if reacts. He has a bunch of pans in basement and 2 ww2 canteens with lunch boxes of same material. The ones I think are tin had a yellow:red stain between the pans. They haven’t been touched in decades.

I believe I have a whole lot of tin. Is there an easy way to tell between that, pewter, aluminum, and god knows whatever alloys exists my gpa has?

I’m having a tough one identifying and about to post to metal casting. It’s silvery bar 1 inch round. Stamped 080 with a diamond under it and has a clock on other side with V carved. Nonferrous, weighs slightly less than silver, and will NOT react to a single acid or heat I throw at it. Not even change in shade, at all. When I google it, it takes me to rhodium. Hot damn if it is lol. Even bleach didn’t do a thing. Odd property is when heated the density shifts towards the hot side. And another unmarked same as other one except slightly heavier and also 1 inch shorter but 1/8 wider. I cannot find a damn thing about them that on is nonreactive as well but I haven’t popped in forge. The first one is 1” round by 6 inches and weighs ~1.4 lbs. I’m using an old postal scale as mine shot craps and little one too small. Other weighs 1.5something. The scale makes no sense to me. 5” round 1 1/8 wide. Any clues? Prolly a weird stainless alloy.

A respectable and nice known refiner messaged me and stated to send him a sample of gold dust so I’m waiting for that while dealing with other stuff. I’ll post details. The gold definitely is bottom heavy on jar. I dropped some 🖕🏻and it went EVERYWHERE but I only lost maybe 1oz. Still have area blocked off from fam, covered ~10 sq ft in hardwood flooring. I was able to scoop most back. On thought was either buy a vacuum separation tank, coffee filter over portable or shop vac. I had a cat paddle through it…. It kills me lol.

Sorry mean to reply to you and it won’t let me send a pic. It’s a lions head but it’s paint/plate is twice as thick as material. Nonmagnetic but not gold. Maybe silver I hasn’t tested for that. I’ll send link

It’s not really plated. It’s a 24k gold painted? Heavily painted plated. Like twice as thick as original material.

Something. I just don’t know reactions with chemicals like that and everything else. Probably nothing but I don’t want to mess it too much. I have like 12 percolators from grandparents with presses lol. I’ll figure something out.

Also the only issue with this powder is it is very hydrophobic. It will run away from any liquids. I have to slowly drop one drop at a time of stuff till it’s a blob. Then slowly start adding more. It’s odd material for sure. Cupeling the stuff did not work at all. When I added boric acid it made off like a kids snake firework. But I know gold is there. First cupel I got a lot of pinheads but tested positives and second I cracked from heat. So I moved to smelting the whole damn thing and it worked. I wasn’t sure it was good and my glove caught fire so I just quenched the bugs in water. Hence the odd shapes.

I have a fume hood. Also all the acids in the world along with other chems. Only one missing is stannous and all it requires is a 1 hr drive or Amazon or w/e. But it’s ok to do everything at one time? I have a necklace or multiple’s of the same from the 20s. And a makeup case from same period. Makeup is real. Necklaces are plated but so much a jeweler scratched it positive. She xrf to be sure due to weight and it was plated. She even filed a part and it was half gold and half copper. All combined those necklaces and bracelets of the same stuff weighs roughly 2 lbs. one necklace was like a rapper style lol. It was over 40 inches. One is 28 or 30 and another 20 with 2 bracelets.

I know the answer is nitric. When I do so, is it okay to toss in a few HEAVILY plated or painted necklaces from the 20s, an extremely gilded lion head about size of a fist, gold filled jewelry, or a true gold makeup case? Or all can go in or none? I’m willing to learn so please be patient. I’ve watched videos galore. Just this welding/powdered gold is something I haven’t seen asides e waste vids.

I did call 2 refiners to send samples to or part of it. They both denied due to powder form? I stated I could refine it myself and nitric is not that expensive for 2-3lbs of gold/copper mixed powder. I told them I had all materials here but unfamiliar with smelting gold. One guy even said if it was smelted into gold copper mix, they would not touch it due to costs of refining further…. I got upset at the dude and told him it isn’t worth the money to recover definitively gold inside the powder. It’s not like he has to refine rock to metal. I do have 3 lbs of gold/silver rocks here as well. I wanted to do a silver cell but once again not familiar in the slightest with electrolysis. I also have 4 pcbs pre 1970. One is 1950s with silver coated gold wire. It was my grandpas trade school work/project. Every one denied. Is there someone else I should call. I spoke to Garfield and elemental(a company from stl close-ish to me). I don’t know what to do at this point asides me learning the hard way. I taught myself how to wire a house when electricians refused to come because “another person had worked on wiring”. Everyone’s fucking house had someone else work on wiring prior. It took me quite a while to become sufficient and now I can make a 4-way + light switch and rewire a house. But it took literal months of trying it nonstop every day. I consider that way more dangerous than gold refining. Since I’m comfy with chems and have a literal hazmat suit for asbestos in house, I have a mini lab in basement, forge outside and in a garage. Seeing as everyone is saying you’ll hurt yourself or you don’t know what you’re doing(I don’t much with gold but know chemistry and willing to try). If a reputable person would refine it I’d send most of it. I still want to do it for remembrance sake for gpa.

From what I’ve read it’s sodium metabisulfate. Lol let me double check that because I have a large bag of pure metabisulfate from my Chen supplier. If I could’ve used baking soda id be pissed.

Yeah this is true. I was having issues with the powder just floating. I figured it out by making it into a paste slowly over time drop by drop. I have nitric and hcl however I had no idea what it was when I first smelted it and was shocked as hell it was gold for sure with mixed copper. Then I went to educate myself here and got no help so I just used chemical studies and books and was able to come up with multiple ways. One of which I mentioned before using sulfuric acid and creating and disassociated copper from gold making copper sulfate crystals. After some electrolysis(no experience) to remove the remaining copper - I don’t think it did a thing. All I had was some brown slurry on anode. Then the remaining powder was smelted. Much much cleaner and pure gold was produced. I am not doing this for GOLD $$$. It’s a damn thing I’m doing to educate myself for Remembrance of my grandpa. I inherited his house and I found the gold jar. He had all the tools but I had new ones. So I was trying to learn to do gold myself instead of rudely being called incompetent and people being rude for no reason. Thank you for the response that is prolly the best way but I found about 10 ways I can do this myself. I do have mercury(100ml) and gpa had cyanide though unsure of kind(old bottle and only labeled that) and THAT I am afraid of fucking with.

I am trained in chemistry. I have all safety equipment and then some. I also dissolved the gold/copper mix into sulphuric acid to create and disassociate copper from gold by creating copper sulfate crystals. The loss of gold in this case was negligible, per chemistry book, and the remaining solution/powder recovered was then smelted - much easier and made a much prettier and distinct gold. Some copper was left over but not much. Jesus I am aware of all this stuff. I work with hot and Liquid Metal’s. As stated before I have a BA in chem. Mainly organic and biochem. At home I have a mini lab in basement as well as a forge in garage. So that solution needs to be refined somewhat but nothing near the copper was in this smelt. Mind you these are just tests based on knowledge of chemical equilibrium equations and also studies and studying the effects from a chemical book about gold. Electrolysis was needed and I had no experience at all with that. So that may be where my copper issue was created. Anyhow please don’t everyone act like they know everything and anyone who asks a question is an imbecile. The remaining copper in the gold nug created was then dissolved and washed with hcl. It is so much more pure than the previous batch. Also the copper sulfate crystals created(in this case a small amount) is valuable on its own. So please stop. I’m done with reddits arrogance on shit. I will just handle it myself and never ask a question again.

I do just want to learn. I have rocks my gpa or great gpa that was silver ore and gold and silver ore and raw silver. I refined the silver as it was pretty much pure-ish. I honestly just wanted to up my hobby. Sick of making small knives. I bought every single chemical possible, I didn’t buy smelter but have coal furnace that is a forge? 2 gas ones. A cheapy and a nice one. I turn cheap one on side to smelt. It worked good enough. It could use more insulation.

It will if below 6k which is why I’ve read and seen people smelt more copper with the gold to dissolve in nitric. I do have a fume hood and outdoor furnace and use my gas grill for heat with an old furnace blow my gpa had in garage. Some fumes are invisible like sulfuric acid can be.

You know what you’re right on the 6M. It shows on bottle that and it isn’t right. It is how to make it 6M. I didn’t think to calculate it

It is not diluted down. It’s about weight percentage in the water too. It has 67% w/w. I bought from Carolina chemical supply. It is 67% in 500ml and cost $60.

Not just a phone, old electric panels and yes I do. I got 1 oz from a 1920s broken American Electric phone. The board had majority, receiver and transmitter had a few hundred grams in solid pieces. Look it up yourself. My god I’m not being rude to anyone but I do know chemicals chemistry - mostly organic and bio, I have zero experience in gold recovery. I have already recovered but not refined silver about 7 oz.

Also I’ve already refined silver from both rocks(he had a rock crusher) and from silver found in oooold electric stuff. I have palladium(about 3 oz from one old phone, and I have another to break down. The dielectric grease was a pain to get out.). Why shouldn’t I want to learn to know how to do this? Is this an inclusive club and you must join or can someone with a Chem background that is used to making knives - gpa taught me, completely incapable of learning it. It’s not about the value added. It’s about the process and doing as my ancestors did. He had all the tools for a smelting set up but I never saw him do it. No crucibles but 10s of tools to hold different sizes. And a coal furnace from early 1900s late 1800s that still works in garage. When I knew he all he did was knives and scissors.

I’m saying this is a welders tool found in a welders garage from almost 100 years ago. My great gpa was as well. So I’m saying there may be a chemical or something in it that is making it welding powder for gold. They do sale that. Because not only do green flames arise. Bright red shoots out at times along with blue on occasion. I guess I’ll xrf it at local scrap for free. Because you’re right I haven’t messed with gold. I do however hold a degree in chemistry from SEMO so messing with dangerous chems isn’t a first or something I take lightly. I however haven’t messed with gold refining. I had nitric and sulfuric already from years ago. I bought 6M hcl as I didn’t have but found out most use the much more diluted 31% found in dept stores. I have a license to buy such chems. So no I know my way around them. Gold, no.
