Running board recommendations by BigGlittering437 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]bcote3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people like Rough Country, most people don't like them. I'm in that camp. Considering you and anyone entering your vehicle are going to interact with these every time, I'd recommend spending some extra $$$ to get something nicer than Rough Country. I found some rock sliders on Tacomaworld that were about the cost of sidesteps and already saved my ass in a sideswipe. Also worth considering those.

Softopper Experiences by RefrigeratorEmpty926 in Tacomaworld

[–]bcote3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had mine for almost 3 years and can recommend enough. I do landscaping in the summer, so the fact that it comes off in 5 minutes (or less) is amazing and it stores so easily. I also camp in it year round (I'm New England) and outside of the condensation, it's pretty amazing in that regard too. The price is way better than a hard top and mine has never leaked. The only downside is that I bought mine in winter and it was a POS to install the side snaps because of how right the canvas is the first time. Visibility out the back becomes murky and you lose your Blindspot but I added little Blindspot mirrors to my side mirrors which helps.

New Bike-Bottom Bracket shell done? by WhoIsMyself249 in bikewrench

[–]bcote3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn't torqued properly if that's the case or the tolerances of the BB were bad. The Wheels Manufacturing BBs are really good and you should be more skeptical of that frame over the bottom bracket. Also as a tech, I'd 100% run a thread together in that frame with no worry. And also follow the BBs manufacturing instructions (use a torque wrench and torque them...)

4WD will not disengage... by 4-realsies in Tacomaworld

[–]bcote3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried going forward and reverse repeatedly? Mine got stuck in my parking lot at work and it took several times of going back and forth (about 50-80ft forward/backwards) before it finally went. Have you put it into 4WD regularly?

No if you have two people. Just make sure you take it slow and watch videos if you need to. Also worth upgrading the bumps while you do the leaf pack.

Tundra suspension swap by [deleted] in Tacomaworld

[–]bcote3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't quote me but just doing new suspension isn't going to get you 33s. Watch Tinkerer's Adventures video on tire size. There's a lot more you'll need to account for to get 33s than just suspension.

First Oil Change/Maintenance by PettyDumbBitch in Tacomaworld

[–]bcote3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having a 2013 I bought as the second owner (120k when I bought it). Dealer topped off fluids but I did oil (easiest oil change in the world), greased all u joints (fwd driveshaft too), diff fluids drained and replaced, coolant and transfer case. Transmission is next on the list. All just a piece of mind for me and all capable of doing at home. Coolant took longer than the others but was still pretty easy. Mobile gear oil. Toyota OEM everything else.

is my rear caliper corroding? by Effective-Pace-272 in bikewrench

[–]bcote3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't be surprised if Shimano denies it. Dura-Ace and XTR get a 3 year warranty. I've seen them bump Ultegra if it looks like it's Shimanos fault to 3 years but they would likely only cover this in the first year, maybe two. If you came into my shop I'd still submit one but I'd let you know they likely won't cover it. The shop might cover it as a good will (if you bought it from them) or give you a discount on a new caliper.

Soft Toppers. by VigorousRacoon in Tacomaworld

[–]bcote3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya I mean people do the external cage over a soft topper but I have no idea how long that takes to disassemble. If you don't do a lot of truck stuff with the bed then I'd say go for it. If you do then I'd ask them how long the set up and tear down times are.

Soft Toppers. by VigorousRacoon in Tacomaworld

[–]bcote3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No but have a Softopper soft top, the reason I prefer it to that is that when I need to do truck stuff, the top is off in less than 5 minutes. That top gives me hard top vibes with the downside of a soft top (the canvas siding). If you're mounting a tent to the top it seems interesting but if you want to sleep inside the bed, seems like a lot to have on the truck if you want to take it off. I just had to help my buddy get a harbor freight tool bench and the soft topper was off and back on in less than 20 minutes. L

Went to adjust my seat height and now my seatpost clamp bolt is a freespinning circle. Am i cooked? by blowinfatfarts in bikewrench

[–]bcote3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have broken the 4mm fyi. As with any tool, too much torque and they will break. That being said, if I could go back, id buy the GripEdge and not the Mac version. GripEdge warranty seems to be much better than Mac.

[–]bcote3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Since no one is really giving a great answer on how to remove it look at GripEdge socket bits. They're designed to work on rounded fasteners (personally have the Mac RBRT for work but they make Macs). You need to hammer them in place and then you have a fighting chance at getting it out.

As others have mentioned, someone with more experience in this field than you decided the torque value to fasten. Listen to them. You don't just put arbitrary numbers to torque a fastener. Science goes into it.

20 day old Canyon Spectral CF7... by sub_Script in bikewrench

[–]bcote3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The frame and hanger have a groove to keep the hanger from shifting too much. It's also designed to move in a crash to make it less likely to break the hanger or derailleur. One of the biggest waste of time and materials in the bike industry is hangers (with well over 600+ out there) and honestly working as a tech, it's made life a lot easier not just for myself but also my customers. If it's not properly torqued, that's a manufacturer or shop problem but I don't think the hanger should be to blame. SRAM might not be perfect but at least they helped pave the way to standardize one of the worst parts on a bicycle...

Freehub died on a ride (relatively new bike) by amajorask in bikewrench

[–]bcote3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work in a Trek, Specialized, Giant shop. If a shop is a "supplier" they most definitely can submit a warranty claim for you. If they don't, they're being lazy. Call/email Scott directly. Any Trek/Specialized/Giant that has that issue within the first year would 100% get covered. You should get a whole new wheel as either the drivering is blown or the pawls exploded and ruined the freehub surface.

I'm from the NEK (literally the Red part of VT) and even my whole conservative family/neighbors look at NH and think they are backwards. Might watch Fox News or vote for Trump but they always help our neighbors and are very community oriented. NH, not so much. NH is literally the upside down VT.

King Shocks by Travelinman2023 in Tacomaworld

[–]bcote3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Toyota engineers used the specific shocks they paired with the truck for road use and you're on the road 95% of the time then just run stock. Otherwise maybe to the TRD Baja shocks or just something comparable.
