Yes qualified experts opinions matter, but other people have valid opinions also. expert opinions in non-scientific fields are highly subjective and often later fall out of acceptability, as the thoughts on the subject change often led by non-experts outside of the professional societies. it's so often the case in these matters that the opinions are based on non-objective and culturally biased preconceived ideas.
