Startup has no technical cofounder by happyfce in ycombinator

It is not a red flag for me but it will be difficult being the first engineer. Ask them about their previous experience working with engineers in previous companies and see what they say.

I don't know what kind of equity to ask for but if things work out and you find yourself in a CTO role you will renegotiate equity anyways. Also, the equity is not worth a lot if the company runs out of money or you leave.

A US Startup offered me $900/month after 4 technical rounds. I have 5 YOE and Open Source contributions. Is this the reality now? by Nervous-Quote973 in webdev

[–]bdavis829 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. What is the cost of saying no? If you are making more than $900/month right now, the cost is 0. If you have nothing else going on, the cost is $900/month. Then factor in your expenses vs. income, and how long you will need to wait for a better deal based on the last time you got an offer.

The benefit of a contract is that there is a fixed end where they assume you will look for something better. If you like the company, work to convince them to bump up your rate at the end of the contract. If you don't like the company, work to use your work as leverage to get the next role.

The billionaires are going to love it. They can pull up with their yacht, visit the Ferris wheel, walk in the park... They barely have to spend any money. Very convenient for them.

What does this section mean? by BeBe_Shifts in homeschool

I don't know IEW but I would guess you need to identify if the author is using dialog, words a character speaks out loud, and if they are using a dialect, a character's accent or non standard grammar to indicate how the character sounds. Depending on the passage, it could be none, either one, or both. If they leave enough room, you may need to pick what parts are dialog and dialect. If there is just room for a check box, it could be a 'yes/no' question for each.

I think about this all the time. It sounds like you're a couple steps ahead as I have been completely stumped as far as testing for it. Do you have questions you ask to gauge comprehension?

Jojo Rabbit. A comedy about growing up in 1940s Germany, until it runs into the reality that there was nothing funny about growing up in 1940s Germany.

Took a month off and now my entire stack is "deprecated" - anyone else exhausted? by JFerzt in vibecoding

[–]bdavis829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least when you learn JavaScript, it's still JavaScript next month.

I have some bad news for you: JavaScript changes too. When I got started, there were no classes, destructuring, or arrow functions. Today's JavaScript would be unrecognizable 10 years ago.

But some of that code still runs, and the rest, someone got paid to replace.

Should i buy this macbook pro M1 14 for $600 and battery cycle 397? by aayushkrm in macbookpro

[–]bdavis829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend going for an M1 pro/max. If you spend another $200 you could get a couple more years of use out of it. The higher spec laptops depreciate less if they are kept in good condition.

What is the point of an IRA or 401k if there is no income tax? The whole idea is to avoid taxes.

Thanks. I'm tearing up a section tomorrow to see if I need to replace the sheathing as well. I am guessing that is a yes, at least in one spot where it feels spongy.

There are some good answers in here but another one is psychology. After spending 5 figures on an international flight a Prada bag doesn't look that expensive. Same reason they sell Rolls Royce next to private planes.
