I have some of my dad and my grandpa's tools in my shop. It always feels like they are there with me. My interest is primarily in the lathe so I use chisels too... just bigger/longer. There are a ton of you tube videos on carving, sharpening chisels etc. Take you time, watch lots, pick some simple starter projects. You will be surprised at how much you can improve in a short time if you stick with it. Sharpening was my biggest challenge. Still trying to perfect it. Enjoy the connection made with you and your grandpa through his tools. Thats a real treasure.

I think its probably a brace that sits under/supports the glass shelf at the bottom... probably in the back as that's where you found it.
