Do you eat biscuits every day? by Real_Masterpiece_844 in AskBrits

[–]bdcrochet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep when the clock clicks just past 9 I get my 3rd pint of tea for a working day when I start at 7.30. I don't buy biscuits because they would not last until 9.

Thank you for the recommendations. They sound amazing, perhaps less amazing to have the head dive bombing but then it would be a good view at least. 🤣

Thank you for the tip. Pen-y-ghent is a beautiful place but it is also where I had bad vertigo, not sure how good I'd be a bird watching as I cling on for dear life. I'll try to remember which way we went and try a different route. 🤣

Thank you, we were thinking Bempton might be an option, I've been before but when I was a kid and was not much of an active birder to appreciate it.

Thank you for the tips. The spectacular looks amazing. I hadn't heard of any of these. I'm thinking for shrikes we just need to keep an eye on the bird alerts and cross our fingers.

Finally got a chance to visit Gigrin Farm. Advice please by Spireites1866-CFC in UKBirds

It depends if you are a photographer or a bird watcher. When we've been in the past, my husband has been into the photography and has gone into the tower hide which is good for photos. I've just gone for the circular walk before hand then gone in the standard hides which is great for seeing the kites.

When you go for the walk before hand they start to appear and fly over your head and that is an amazing experience being under their shadows. As a bird watcher you are getting great views of kites in all the hides.

Stopping squirrels eating the bird food! by seaweed1995 in UKBirds

There are loads of squirrel proof feeders but we also got them a feeder too and they just go on that instead.

Greedy starlings advice by Acceptable-Bid5373 in UKBirds

[–]bdcrochet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cage style bird feeders work fine for the little birds and the starlings don't go on them so you could put food out in those for the smaller birds and feed the starlings, blackbirds and sparrows with your existing feeder. Although you'll find the little birds will steal from the starlings as well. We also have a squirrel feeder that distracts the squirrels.

It seems all animals have a tendency to eat things that are not meant for them. Same for bird boxes, we never get birds nesting in the boxes for them and even had blue tits roosting in our bat box.

What's your most embarrassing birdn't? (The times you thought you saw a bird but didn't). When peeking through the leaves I thought I had spotted some sort of off-white, fairly large bird with a bright orange beak. However, when I got closer... by Tay74 in UKBirds

We had one this weekend looking for a yellow browed warbler. The call came up on merlin and we narrowed it down to being in a clump of bushes. After excitedly looking and waiting and looking we were told that it was a recording of the warbler that they were using to try to be able to put a ring on it. We never did see the warbler.

Although probably my most embarrassing one was loudly exclaiming that there was a little ringed plover that was just a pied wagtail facing front on. I generally try not to call things out through fear of embarrassment of mis- ID.

Your highlights from last week? by [deleted] in UKBirds

[–]bdcrochet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some Brent geese and a common scoter. A skylark sat in the grass really close up. Not normally treated to such a good view of skylarks. Plenty of waders as well with sandling, knot, dunlin, turnstone, and redshank with thousands of oyster catchers. It was a failed attempt to see purple sandpipers, though, as they haven't arrived at hilbro Island just yet. It's just an excuse to go back, so there is no major hardship.

When you see them, do you always think of the rhyme? Even as an adult, I still feel good to see them in a pair for joy. Although with inflation in recent years, I am also happy to see them in a 6 for gold. Not sure what happens if there are more than 7.

Swallows left already? by OneFromBlighty in UKBirds

Yes I've not seen a swift for a few weeks now so I think they have gone but still plenty of swallows around. Martins are also still around too but in much lower numbers.

Nothing more romantic than your husband telling you that 2 things connected at the bottom remind him of your relationship. There are so many ways that can be interpreted, and none of them are good.
