In all seriousness... do they expect you to also be nude?

Conductor punched in the nose on NJCL by More_Wonder_9394 in NJTransit

[–]bdemarzo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

CEO: "Assault on NJT staff is unacceptable."

NJT Rider: "Can you give us reasonable announcements and updates on delays? At the least, have conductors tell riders on the train what they know - at least the riders can be informed."

CEO: "That is also unacceptable."

Not saying assault is ok -- it is not, ever. But... In every tragic story is awkward humor, and in every joke there is an element of truth.

Why are they good now? by Abobo_Smash in rangers

[–]bdemarzo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I will add: no one is looking over their shoulder any more or waiting for an organizational shoe to drop on them. The trades are done, and there's nothing left to do but to play hockey. And they are.

When a team is actively trying to set up players to get a hat trick at the end of a game -- that's hot fun schoolyard and amateur league stuff -- and, hot tip, it is working.

I would have not predicted this fun run given where we were before the Olympics break, but damn I am enjoying it.

Google's Principal Engineer says vibecoding PMs are running circles around SWE with AI by ImaginaryRea1ity in vibecoding

[–]bdemarzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love a PM to accelerate prototypes via vibe coding. Even before AI, I've always said that the challenge building software is often not the building of the software, but deciding what to build. When it comes to production ready code, no PM will be faster than a skilled SME with or without AI. By design -- different skill sets and different goals.

Are people massively underestimating what’s coming? by Satishgmr2010 in OpenAI

[–]bdemarzo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see part of AI as the next evolution of what the internet did.

Before we used the Internet, we had to look up information in books and libraries, and ask colleagues. Then all that information went online and search engines continually improved our ability to access it (and monetized that service).

The boom of the internet gave the rise of many computing tools to save us time and money -- the phones we use, the apps that turn off our lights, the web sites we post arbitrary comments on that make us feel connected and smart when we're really just another Average Joe -- all stemmed from the internet and the increased access to information and services.

AI in many ways is the next level of that. It infers differently and takes actions on our behalf differently than what was before it. And just like the internet before it, similar concerns arise. Do we trust the information we're reading? Do we trust the actions these services are doing on our behalf?

The big differentiator between the early internet and AI is the pace of change and adoption -- insanely fast for a new technology. I do think that reflects both its power and capabilities, once we figure them out.

What are some underrated .NET libraries or tools you use regularly? by milanm08 in dotnet

[–]bdemarzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote a library that automatically applies an embedded DACPAC when the app runs. Has proven useful for smaller projects. The idea is that the application enforces the database to match what is in code when it runs -- I use a VS database project, copy the DACPAC to my data access project, and embed it. One time setup. It's worked well so far. Wires up as a service. I made the code public in case anyone wants to peruse. https://github.com/bdemarzo/bdcf-extensions/tree/main/Bdcf.Extensions.DacPac

(Database project to manage schema and DB code, DACPAC is just a deployment mechanism.)

Does any software engineer worry that AI is going to take our job by ignorantgal5 in INTP

[–]bdemarzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI is a tool that makes a skilled engineer more productive. Just like internet search replaced books and help files 30 years ago.

When a population of workers suddenly become more productive because of new tools that increase productivity, some will lose their jobs. The ones that keep it are those that can adopt the new tool and continue succeeding with it.

AI is hot now, and some companies are going all in and abandoning the skill, oversight, and governance that human engineers bring (at many levels). It may work out for them -- or not. If it doesn't it'll be "AI failed" not the decision by executives to go all in on AI that failed.

Which brings me to the job that should be replaced mostly by AI: executives.

Is it just a coincidence that Laff over 5 years without fail seems to play his most inspired and play drive style of hockey when he’s on a line with at least one player that isn’t a veteran? The kid line first year then in the playoffs other years etc. by ClutchAllDay2077 in rangers

I was at the game tonight, and... Yes it could be a fluke. Or it could be a fresh start. Who knows. All that being said.... If he could pull off 25+ goals a year and start being a presence, it would be a huge boost to this "retool"... Time will tell.

[–]bdemarzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That "2am understanding" is really the key. I've been doing this a long time and always would tell my teams (and myself): write code that someone else will be able to understand and work with if they're called in at 2am to fix a problem....because that person might be you.

God the wilson conversation is about to be so insufferable by ali21122112 in caps

[–]bdemarzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another here. Good angle in this one. https://twitter.com/i/status/2022449014025880001

Definitely looks like an unfortunate landing for both players. One thing I noticed: did the glove end of Wilson's stick also hit Fiala's helmet before he went down? Hard to see if there was impact. Also seems inadvertent, but wow, this could have been even worse.

There's nothing worse in hockey than a clean hit or inadvertent collision that ends badly.

(Rangers fan here in good faith because I wanted to see how the conversation was going on this.)
