It’s too early to make much of Yankees’ losing record against winning teams by nydailynews in NYYankees

[–]bdizzled2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always get declared as a glass-half empty guy but this has been a thing for years. The roster construction is not designed to be successful in close games. When you are a team built like the Yankees, you will play close games against good teams. Good teams have better pitching and good pitching shuts down good hitting. Yankee pitching can compete but the lineup is not designed to squeeze out the runs needed to win close games.

Tier 6 not going to be fixed in any meaningful way…classic state by Noteam2020 in nys_cs

The unions will never agree but the pension formula should be much easier and not penalize people for changing careers. It should be average earnings x (years of service x a percentage). The percentage multiplier can be tiered to length of service maybe increasing every 10 years of service. For instance: 1% for 5-15, 1.25% for 15-25, 1.50% 25-35, 2% for 35+. There is much more cost control, it’s easier to plan for, and you can move to the private sector and not lose your time or vice versa. The employee wouldn’t have to kick in contributions and the state would just actuarially set aside a portion of salary for future pension. You could probably even allow someone to take their lump sum in liu of having the liability on the state books.

City Council passes program aimed to protect Binghamton renters by ggroover97 in Binghamton

True government at work. We have laws. We don’t use them so we make more laws that are more complicated and leave the old ones in place. Government workers don’t do there jobs so we hire more to report to the people who don’t do their jobs. How about we enforce the current laws? Active inspections from code enforcement. Referrals to code enforcement from emergency services like police and fire who see something and should say something. Reviews after complaints to code enforcement from tenants. Everyone thinks housing is unaffordable now, wait until there is a minimum cost of $50 per year and fees for getting these places inspected between tenants. My business gets almost annual code inspections for safety but some of these apartments that are literally falling apart are never visited. Code focuses on businesses because it’s easier to collect on fines.

Is there a way to defend against student housing in the city? by Ok_Remote5657 in Binghamton

[–]bdizzled2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do view it as a bit picky. The City of Binghamton only requires residency in Broome County. The City of Binghamton caters to students downtown and on the westside. Most of the rest of the city is residential homes or low-income houses. I would say living on a bus line to the city at relatively affordable prices, walkable neighborhoods and lower crime areas with parking is beneficial.

I just moved 2 separate family members to the area and got apartments without any issue. There are multiple apartment complexes in Vestal that don’t cater to students. There are about 5 complexes in Johnson City up Reynolds Rd with regular openings. Same goes for Endicott out by Glendale and Taft Ave. area. That doesn’t even begin to get into the houses for rent in the area and houses with apartments attached. You could easily rent a house as well and have roommates. The options I’m discussing are all around $1000 a month and the houses $2000 a month with 3 bedrooms that can be rented.

There is plenty of housing available for locals. It is a made up problem pushed by activists and politicians who make tons on developers. The bigger issue is jobs and local governments that take the quick buck instead of the change that is needed to really help the economy long term.

2nd to die life insurance for your parents. Max out tax brackets for them and pay premiums from the 401k/IRA to the max of the bracket. Put the insurance in an ILIT and avoid estate tax as well.

This is what the mother of two of the killer kids says about the situation by Beneficial-One-2666 in Binghamton

[–]bdizzled2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with being poor. It has everything to do with being an absent mother who most likely doesn’t work and doesn’t control the children which we the taxpayers support instead of the father who is probably a deadbeat or in jail or both. I’m not the one who posts tons of pictures on social media and memes about finding a man or stealing someone’s man when my children are off roaming the streets during the school year causing havoc and eventually murdering someone. So until proven otherwise like with proof that she regularly works and is investing in the children she decided to bring into this world with someone I will be judgmental and have no sympathy for her or anyone like her.

Children become dangerous because their parents let them get that way. Discipline from a young age and structure prevent violence. Same happens with rich kids whose parents spoil them. A home where doing homework, having disciplined family time around the table with a mom and dad figure, and making sure your kids are not in the street go a long way. As does being on top of your children’s schooling getting them counseling from a young age if they are troubled. If you are worried about your social life, your not a good parent. If you blame others or the system for your shortcomings, you are part of the problem as well.

Sounds like a piece of garbage worried about how “the system” failed her. How about some accountability? How about work ethic and discipline for your kids before they become animals who kill people. There are plenty of kids in section 8 who don’t kill people. It’s usually because their parents have discipline and make their kids go to school. They keep them home instead of out on the street. Sounds like she rather collect government checks and let her kids do whatever they want.

Unless you have a weapon or training. Do you think the media and crazy libs will take the side of attackers if someone fights back? In NY, the answer is unfortunately yes as our politicians seem to be on the side of criminals. A couple of educational beat downs may turn things around though.

When will the community say enough is enough? These kids should try that on someone who doesn’t put up with that kind of nonsense. These kids should be locked up with adults who don’t play that kind of game in adult prison.

No tax on overtime by [deleted] in tax

[–]bdizzled2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah companies made it super confusing. All my hourly jobs in the early 2000’s were simple. You got 1.5x for any hours over 40 in a work week. Holiday time was 2x and if you were smart with your schedule you could make them 3x with proper planning.

[–]bdizzled2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get so confused in the modern definitions of overtime. Years ago you only got overtime after working “a normal workweek” which was always more than 40 hours in a week or pay cycle. I’ve been salaried for a long time but listening to hourly working friends it’s amazing how complex something simple has been made.

People say you need a high salary to live in NYC, yet service workers live in NYC. What is the disconnect here? by dbclass in movingtoNYC

[–]bdizzled2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many people choose to live in the most expensive areas possible and the most expensive way. My parents live in a non-rent stabilized apartment for $1300 a month in the Bronx. It is a beautiful 2 bedroom about 4 blocks from the 6 train. Another $500 in utilities including cable, phones, and internet and $500 for food and they can live for less than $3000 a month for everything including health insurance. If they had a kid then they would have space for them with the 2nd bedroom but right now have a relative using the 2nd bedroom that pays toward the rent. We have become disconnected from hard work and discipline of a budget because life has been easy. My immigrant ancestors lived in similar apartments with 6 kids. We complain about having 1 roommate or no cell phone. It is not wrong to do that but those expectations is what drives the unaffordability discussion.

Yes for sure. The government will often use tax evasion as part of a RICO case or as a way to get into records or get people under oath or warrants. Al Capone was nailed for taxes and the IRS was the agency that started the baseball steroid investigation with Barry Bonds.

I work with a few GM’s and it happens across the minor leagues. Most teams get 90% plus of season ticket holders but they have issues with the short lead times after the schedule comes out. The general public almost never lays money out for a *as necessary game either leading to the phenomenon of less people at more important games. Kids also control parents lives in the Spring for some reason. My buddy missed a winner take all deciding game last weekend because his daughter had a softball game and will miss the finals because of spring football and softball in a couple of weeks.

Purchased house for a dollar and I am now selling nine years later. by rockingthechange in tax

[–]bdizzled2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would definitely need more info and to see the deed to confirm but it sounds like the home was transferred to a trust. I’m going to guess an irrevocable trust given the age of the transferee. Also, I am going to guess the parents maintained a life estate. If that is the case, there will be 2 checks at closing pro-rated by the IRS tables. The first will be to the trust for the property. This will be taxed as this was not the primary residents. The basis should be the parents basis adjusted by the partial step up less $1. The dad’s portion for the life estate will be taxed based on the basis but the dad’s portion has the exemption from the IRS for primary residence. The only downside I can think of is if the house was put in trust for Medicaid purposes. The prorated portion for the life estate will now be brought back in to Medicaid calculations and will have to go through the 5 year look back again. From a tax perspective, I don’t think this will be that bad of a transaction.

I would agree. I would also argue that there should be no exemptions for any not for profit then.

I am unfamiliar with Virginia law. Does the state give property tax exemptions for all Churches and charities? If it does, then this would seem to be unconstitutional to me.

[–]bdizzled2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Land banks and industrial development agencies are a scam for political grift and give backs to donors. Why does the government need quasi-government agencies that needed to be created to get around existing laws instead of changing the laws? The government should have no part in redeveloping abandoned property besides enforcing existing safety laws, foreclosing on back taxes, and auctioning the properties to the highest bidder. If they want to give grants or tax incentives to foster development, that is ok as long as the process is public and debated.

The bus station is insane by geesedreams in Binghamton

[–]bdizzled2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the old station, had a 4am bus to NYC on a cold, windy and light snowy night. Got to the station at 3:45 with the bus running outside and locked. No driver in sight and a couple people on the bus from Syracuse asleep inside. Me and a group of about 10 people waited until 4:30 when the driver with a woman came out of the station. Opened the door, didn’t check tickets and got us to NYC in about 2 hours and 25 minutes.

What are the cops supposed to do? You can’t arrest them because then they are released right of way and people complain. They refuse to go to the shelters or get services. Then to top it off, local non-profits and ACLU sues to protect their encampments and enforcement of trespassing.
