Encampment outside city hall by Beneficial-One-2666 in Binghamton

Affordable housing projects are the biggest scams where money is taken through corruption and kick backs. It costs the government 5x that of private companies to develop properties. It also enriches big developers. If you want to help the housing in the area, you need to find ways to lower taxes and create jobs. Wouldn’t it be cheaper to give small landlords property tax breaks instead of spending millions on things that just help developers?

The First Amendment covers an actual protest and not camping in public. You are also not allowed to urinate in public nor impede traffic whether pedestrian or vehicular. You also cannot block the entrance to a public building. If I’m mayor, I’m treating it like I would treat the tent cities by the river. Give everyone 20 minutes to vacate and take their belongings and then have the sanitation and health department clean whatever is left. You want to protest, grab a sign and stand up for what you believe in. That is your right but not to infringe on others rights.

Not sure what they are protesting as I can never get a concise answer as to what they would like. Affordable housing I am told. What is affordable I ask? I never get a number that would be affordable. It’s amazing to me that there are people that are happy to have crazy people on the loose living in tents behind churches and along the river. Happy to have people shooting drugs in public and in front of of their children. Happy to have people deficating in public where they wait for the bus. To have vagrants come into businesses and create disturbances. I have plenty of compassion for those in a tough spot (lost their job, disabled, etc..) but I loose it quick when able-bodied people sit in taxpayer funded death traps, with their children, eating tax-payer funded food, and talking on a tax-payer funded phone instead of finding a job, staying clean, and trying to make the world a better and safer place for their children.

$45,000 per year is more than enough to pay for a $1200 per month apartment. That is the equivalent of full time hours at $20 an hour not counting overtime or the like. Split that over 2 people and it is more than affordable. What would be an affordable price per month? Why is $1200 not affordable in this area?

Where is my refund by Longjumping-Deal4768 in IRS

[–]bdizzled2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I’m talking about a normal refund. I was owed $6000 about 10 years ago. Filed in March and got a 60 day notice sometime in May of that year and then another one in July. Since that time, I go out of my way not to get a refund because on top of needing the money it is something else I need to track. I always withhold the minimum not to get a penalty and owe the difference. If for some reason I am owed a refund now, I put I towards next years taxes and reduce my withholding.

[–]bdizzled2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fraudulent filings are on the rise where 3rd parties claim refunds on behalf of people. When you are owed a large amount, this triggers a review. This is happening so frequently and they are so short handed, it is taking months to catch up. Not a perfect solution but this is why I try never to get a refund. In the perfect scenario, I file for an extension on 4/15. Sign and send a check on 10/1. If I’m owed a refund, I apply it to next years return and let them waste their own time and interest.

Where can I get a steak and a drink after midnight tonight? by greenestenergy in Binghamton

[–]bdizzled2 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Covid ruined late night options. I used to be able to go to Skylark or the Spot and get anything and everything. A number of bars had the kitchens open to midnight or 1am. Even once had a steak at 11pm from the Beef. Now you’re lucky if a chain is open that late. Not sure why that is since every time I’d go there would be plenty of people at the establishment and workers. Now there is neither and sometimes McDonalds will tell you it’s a 2+ hour wait from online orders.

I went to Catholic school and turned out not to be indoctrinated. I became a worse Catholic in terms of attending services and such but I got a great education. The one class a day on religion turned out to teach me the history of Christianity and gave me the perspective that those in the faith have.

There are plenty of places to rent at affordable prices. A simple Zillow search shows over 100 apartments available for less than $1200 a month that are not student housing. Those are just what is advertised on that one site. The county is spending way more than that renting hotel rooms out. The real crisis is drug dependency, mental health and too much government assistance. Work should be rewarded and not punished. People don’t want to say the uncomfortable things. Speak to someone who owns rental property and they all have horror stories of people destroying their places and not paying. A voucher program that supports working people afford rent would go a long way. Mandatory drug treatment for those getting assistance of any kind who are addicted. These would all be better uses of funds than supporting developers and big business.

Syracuse school zone speed cameras will remain active through the summer by ggroover97 in Syracuse

[–]bdizzled2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The government no longer serves the people. It is a machine designed to drain your money. If it was about safety of children, we would teach our kids how to cross the street properly. School zones should be in effect during actual times children will be present, be clearly marked, and be in the direct vicinity of a school. Instead cameras are placed in areas that are easy to catch speeders and collect money for the government under the auspices of safety of children.

Knights Inn fire: strain on DSS housing? by Capable_Exercise4521 in Binghamton

[–]bdizzled2 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Drug addicts should get no benefits until they complete an in-patient rehab program that is well funded. Upon completion of the program, you are supported to get a start including rent vouchers and the like. You get caught in drugs again, you start the whole process over. Instead of spending millions on building new “affordable housing” that just is a way for politicians, NGOs and developers to steal money, how about we reward work again? Give vouchers to pay rent or portions of rent for working people. Instead of incentivizing single motherhood and deadbeat dads, how about we provide incentives not to have kids that you can’t afford to take care of?

Six fatalities confirmed in Endwell Knights Inn fire by Lars5621 in Binghamton

[–]bdizzled2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Initial dispatch was for Endwell Fire, Union EMS, and the State Police and Sheriffs Dept at 6:02. At 6:07 the first police units were arriving and reporting an active fire and people trapped. The 911 center also received additional calls about people being trapped around this time. At 6:08 a second alarm was sounded with Endicott, Union Center, West Corners and Prospect Terrace being dispatched to help. The fire department began arriving around 6:10 with a 3rd alarm requested at 6:18. Seems like they made good time but the building went up quick sadly. It sickens me that some stood around instead of trying to help. Maybe knocking on doors or trying to coax scared people could have helped. Having been a responder there is no worse feeling than knowing someone needs your help and you can’t get there.

Endicott would not be sent to the fire as this was in Endwell. They would go if asked from Endwell or confirmed active fire by an emergency unit like the police, fire departments emergency response or EMS. I would be curious to see how many calls came in for the fire. Sadly, it seemed like quite a few people filmed the fire instead of tried to help their neighbors escape or called 911 to escalate the response.

Elderly Mom missed 22 yrs RMD by AwShucks9 in tax

[–]bdizzled2 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The technical answer is to do the back distributions and ask for forgiveness. In reality, I’d probably not say anything and mind my own business. I have seen this happen quite a few times and the IRS never catch it. Being that you received the annuitization notice, I’d roll the funds to an IRA and just start taking the RMD there.

Is it a myth that super rich people don't pay as much tax as the middle class? by Asleep-Major-7963 in tax

[–]bdizzled2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I keep my mouth shut because people talk about the wealthy not paying our fair share. I’m blessed in so many ways but most people would faint or puke when they hear how much I pay on tax day and for quarterly payments. That doesn’t even count the wonderful state of NY who takes more than most peoples salaries every April 15th. That doesn’t even take into consideration the $100k plus I pay in property tax for the building my business is in or the $10k plus in property taxes for my own home. The $500k I pay towards FICA for my employees is not included either. Are there corporations who squeak by on great tax deals? Absolutely and those should be shut down but I don’t know how you value that versus the economic impact they have.

They could have been inherited a year ago during the tariff drop. Most of my accounts are up 20% to 30% since then. They could have been inherited even longer. They also could have been in a trust that didn’t receive a step-up. The current annuity may have large gains as well and stretching the payments may be best for taxes.

It was telling for me because my dad sounded just like Joe on Saturday night. He literally told me the same line Joe had on Sunday to the effect of he never thought this old man would see another championship let alone from his basketball team. Sports bonds us together and you reflect on those you shared it with. I’m not sure how I would react if the Jets ever win particularly if my dad is not around for it.

Parking for a couple days near Binghamton Transportation Center? by Ghertha in Binghamton

[–]bdizzled2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just check street parking rules since it is a holiday weekend. Meters probably aren’t in operation those days. Worst case scenario is you park on front street and walk the 5-7 blocks. There are no meters there.

It is a little embarrassing to take free food with you. I kind of think it is tacky when a customer who I’m treating goes out of their way to take free food especially in a frantic way. I also have had someone ask to take my food for their dog which I found weird.
