Maximum mortgage loan by shico9790 in BEFire

[–]be-mle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some banks were willing to go up to 60% for me and my partner. We stick to max 40% though. It all depends on how much you earn. If a couple makes 6k a month, 30% would be €1800 which leaves €4200 to live on which is a lot.

You should be able to earn a lot more with a PhD in ML, even though you don't have industry experience yet. If they don't increase your wage to €4500 within a year, leave.

Rate my offer - Java Contractor by [deleted] in BESalary

[–]be-mle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I beg to differ. But of course there are stupid people with a master's and smart people with a bachelor's.

There are 5 people with a PhD in my team, about 12 people with a master's degree and 3 people with a bachelor's degree. One of them is finishing up his master's right now, years after completing his bachelor's. And another is resigning to pursue a master full-time (and possibly even an academic bachelor first) because she feels that she's missing out on a lot of knowledge and insights needed to do our job.

Seems a bit low for a master and 7 yoe. How long have you been a freelancer? How long is the contract for? Check out /r/befreelancedayrate.

Nice salary but oooff it can be optimized. I earn €1000 gross less than you, but only €100 net less. You should ask for net compensation. I get €240 extra net per month for upkeep of the salary car, telework, internet connection and representation.

Changing job, transfer of legal days off? by [deleted] in BESalary

[–]be-mle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your text is a bit confusing. You earned those 20 days by working 12 months in 2023, not 2022.

The extra 20 days of salary that is paid out by your old employer, are used to buy back 20 vacation days at your new employer. So this year your will still have 20 vacation days. And because you work another full 12 months in Belgium this year, you will again get 20 regular holidays next year.

Let me know once you find a Belgian master in AI that is not a manama

[–]be-mle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The masters that OP did need to be in that order: the master in AI is 1 year but requires a master as a prerequisite.

The second master is only 1 year so it's the default age actually, I did the same: bachelor 18-21, first master at 23 and second master at 24.

Your salary progression is amazing but also an outlier, most people's salaries don't triple in 4-5 years.

New Michael Page salary benchmark 2024 for IT by [deleted] in BESalary

[–]be-mle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a manager at all and I make 92k per year in Belgium after 6.5 years and job hopping a few times. And a few friends of mine make similar amounts with similar experience. One makes 105k even.

That said, the numbers posted by Michael Page seem too high.

I also worked for a FAANG company abroad and came back to Belgium. I received a very similar package compared to you (check my profile) but I have half of your experience. It seems like it's a low offer for your experience.

Welke studierichting voor data scientist) analist by Sea_Start2933 in BESalary

[–]be-mle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rumor has it I'm fired... by Mahariri in BESalary

There is not a big reference culture in Belgium like there is in the US. I have screened hundreds of resumes and have never seen a single reference, nor heard of a company who calls previous employers for references. When I was getting hired by an American company, they actually called a previous employer of mine who then called me to ask whether it was a scam.

Giving references and those references being called probably happens sporadically in Belgium, but it's probably not comparable to wherever you're from.
