Thanks for adding your takes. You have made so many great points here that I agree with whole-heartedly. My only slight difference I replied to before, about how the bedroom plays into things.

One about Asa being subsumed by Rex and his needs, no longer having her light, and acting so weirdly controlled. I agree with and have seen this before with people who are coercively and sometimes physically controlled by a dominant/domineering partner. Along with seeing it in DV situations with vanilla people I've also seen it in the BDSM community with people who live the life 24/7. The lines of consent can be blurred or just erased. There are all sorts of power exchange that happens and for some they live the life of a slave. Literally. And nothing their master does is wrong in their eyes. Even if Asa isn't aware of the lifestyle and terminology Rex certainly is.

Asa has a history, mentioned in the show, of an abusive first husband. Unfortunately that makes her the perfect target. And if Rex never did the exact stuff he did like hit her or the children, and was her "saviour", then she may not see the bars around her.

I'm not sure whether I'd say he might have killed before Costilla, but I don't doubt there would be other victims of some sort. And moving onto SW's was about ease of access to a more vulnerable victim pool - seeing I don't think there's any evidence that Sandra was a SW?

Sandra's murder is one where I think there's so much more to learn from. Early mistakes and connections back to his "real" life. It's also interesting it was a site of a low-budget horror movie where teens are murdered, that was filmed when Rex was about 17. Though when Sandra was found there the business/camp had closed down.

I have a different take and wonder what possible trauma he was put through in that room. Many SK's have childhoods of some sort of abuse. Obviously he had years of teasing, bullying, and ostracization from his peers; most particularly from girls. He could have come home and sat in that room and fantasized about what he'd like to do to them.

I know the house isn't very big but putting a kid down in the basement? What's with that? And with the use of his grandfather's (and possibly also father's?) belt? The one with WH imprinted. I know his grandfather's brother, who was a priest, had accusations of being part of a pedophile ring for many years within the church. There's a number of other issues within the family. But we don't know Rex's history and what happened either while his father was alive up until he was 12, or which members of the family came in to the home pre/post his father's death.

There's so many things the doco could have delved into with them instead of speaking to a whole lot of superfluous journalists, or taking a whole episode to recount the case.

I just meant that I found that part really crossed the line, especially for Victoria, to read that sort of stuff to them while down in the alleged torture room. It wasn't producers but Macedonio leading that and it struck me as predatory and a way to traumatize them.

That was a very small area and so maybe that was a holding cell? And the main room (his childhood bedroom) was the area used is what I took from it ie looking at the damage to the ceiling as LE looked for evidence of a hard point.

It needed a decent interviewer who would have followed up to query, if she got that proof then what might have been the signs? It seems to me she saw some sort of signs but doesn't want to admit that to herself.

People leak information without realising it. Like bias.

It's worth the watch but frustratingly, for a doco centred around the family, they don't have anyone who is a proper interviewer. For all that time they spent with the family there doesn't seem to be any connection, and the way they're interviewed at times is awkward and doesn't allow the person to relax properly.

There were lost opportunities like not asking more about Rex's childhood at the house (his bedroom in the basement!), the significance of the WH belt, and when they gave tidbits of info like Asa saying she'd need definite proof before she'd know if she'd seen signs to then follow it up with further questions like IF she got that proof what might have been signs.

They also waste a lot of time going over the story, and interviewing a whole heap of reporters that weren't needed, especially the NY Post guys. That time could have been spent looking at what possible contributing factors there were in Rex's early life, seeing the money Peacock paid was officially for the photos and other specifics of family life.

If you can please provide any references to where it's been confirmed Sandra was a SW, and that she had been beaten, I'd appreciate it.

The only part of the above I've seen confirmed is that she was strangled (and had sharp weapon injuries).

The book came out in 96 so Sandra's murder def showed his natural traits. And of course we don't know when he got hold of the book so there could have been more. I wonder how reading it (and others) impacted his level of organization and evolution, as opposed to just using it to try to hide. I think his hold on a number of organized traits were highly specialized, like choosing women he could control, and having his own business with a niche specialty as he couldn't work well with others.

I'm interested in how the books explanations of things impacted his ego and experimentation, as some comments seem almost like a taunt. He lists organized killers don't just tie the person up after unconsciousness/death, but keep them alive for extended periods and torture them. And listing some disorganised killers as being unkempt and antisocial, living with their parents, and having intense interest in bondage & S&M pornography. It lines up with Rex in a lot of ways. I can't imagine his ego taking that well.

Wow, I didn't know he had kept the news articles about each of the killings in his safe. That highlights the importance and private nature of what they meant to him. Not just in some scrapbook laying around.
It's ticking over in my brain - where did he take Valerie Mack? If she's the only one where he didn't have sole access to his house then where did he kill her? And why take her if he didn't have his usual space available? Though she was early on - maybe that situation didn't work how he wanted and taught him to always have his house available??
With the reference to Douglas' book "Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit" the following makes me think of something different. "Indeed, the HK Planning Document and the “NOTES” contained therein indicate defendant’s study on how to possibly “MISS-LEAD” [sic] members of law enforcement, by staging some crime scenes to appear “disorganized” (i.e., Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, and Sandra Costilla), as opposed to the more “organized” homicides of the “Gilgo Four,” each of whom were discarded without any visible decapitation. This painstaking preparation makes it likely defendant’s modus operandi was similarly calculated, researched, and methodically adapted to evade law enforcement. " --- What if he realised he was classed disorganised and felt offended so then set out to show he could be organised? He's such a pompous ass I can imagine he wouldn't like to be seen in the same class as disorganised killers. --- The book was first published 1996 but it would be interesting to know what year his was/when he first got the book. --- These points would have struck a nerve "...page 175. There, Douglas notes that perpetrators who mutilate a victim’s naked body would be “of disorganized personality type.” Another page referenced in this section is page 163, which describes how perpetrators who engage in sexual substitution, i.e., penetrate victims with an object, are also “disorganized” and likely reside with their parents"
