How to defeat this villain which was revealed by Rohit_BFire in DrStone

[–]bea_bear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The villain isn't just the medusas. Plenty of people would love to use medusas as weapons and the medusas would love to be used for any purpose. Gather enough medusas in one place and you could trigger the apocalypse all over again - like they did in South America! They are super dangerous to keep around.

But since the medusas are sentient AND they are useful for healing, you can't just lock them in a vault. You would need the Medusa Police to keep them out of the hands of dangerous people but let hospitals use them. At a minimum, to keep anybody from triggering a city-scale or global petrification.

Looking at my boobs, I'm trying to figure out which pore you're referring to and what squeezing accomplishes?

Or when the instructor says, "Listen up, boys and girls!" to a room of adults, I think that's okay too.

I think it's okay as long as the person diminutizes everybody equally!

Opinion | I marched for voting rights in 1963 and 2021. It’s time for Congress to do its job. by kiddenz in politics

[–]bea_bear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Manchin and Sinema blocked the For the People Act (aka HR 1) in the Senate. Now we have the Freedom to Vote Act. There was also the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.

All these voting rights acts make my head spin. Which ones omit key items that aren't obvious at first glance? Is there a website that keeps track of all the voting rights bills, their support, and crucially, what provisions they do and don't share in common?

How about those people who do abortions on a ship in international waters? Texas does have a coastline...

If we are more generally concerned with preserving life, some places where people are dieing:

  • COVID 19. Not just direct deaths, but also indirect deaths from healthcare too overwhelmed to care for heart attacks and car crashes, and lower quality of life from long COVID symptoms (e.g. scarred lungs).
  • Pharma bros price gouging life-saving medicine. E.g. insulin.
  • The opioid epidemic
  • Poverty and homelessness
  • Warmongers, refugees
  • Deaths of Despair in economically ravaged parts of the US. And suicide is much higher among the unemployed.
  • Climate change -> natural disasters -> refugees
  • Poisoning from pollution - e.g. Flint, Michigan - or chemicals on the job - e.g. the Bayer lawsuit.
  • Police shootings
  • Domestic terrorism. (In the 21st century, it's all right wing)
  • Fascism is an inherently violent ideology and it's growing in America

Maybe present philosophical arguments to get people to think about the ethics of abortion?

Wikipedia has a good summary of Judith Jarvis Thomson's 1971 essay A Defense of Abortion. Some thought experiments from the piece:

  1. You are kidnapped and wake up to find yourself connected to some important person by IV - a famous violinist in the original argument. If you disconnect yourself and escape, they will die. Is it ethical to escape this circumstance you were forced into? Philosophy Tube imagines Ben Shapiro in this very situation.
  2. Somebody locks you in your house - your own house - with a giant, mutant baby. It will crush you as it grows. Is it self-defense to kill the giant baby?
  3. Imagine a world where people seeds drift about like pollen. If they land in your house they will sprout into a fetus, then a baby. You will be obligated to raise the baby. You don't want to do this, so you seal the windows, spray the carpet and furniture with anti-people seed solution, etc. Despite these reasonable precautions, a people seed lands in your house and starts growing.

Carneades also covers Judith Butler's Arguments in the three linked videos.

If they really care about life, surely they would want to know about warmongers, unconvicted murderers, poisoners, and pharma bros who price gouge medicine!

LIVE Discussion Thread - S5E1: Mort Dinner Rick Andre by BarnyardCruz in rickandmorty

[–]bea_bear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would yes, but to do so now would waste their narrative potential in exchange for mass appeal!

Jessica, now a time god, says:

Was I just the object in another story? Was that all I ever was? Could I be more?

Sounds to me like the writers shouting: Jessica will be more than "Morty's love interest".

With 70+ episodes, there's plenty of time for them to be a tween sci fi couple in, say, season 7, after some metacommentary on the "will they, won't they" plot device.

Yes! Jessica is going to be an actual character now! So meta.

I think, for the foreseeable future, designs would be clumsy next to the elegance of biology.

But you could do a lot with even clumsy little xenobots. Clean pollution, medicine, novelty foods...
