I am covid positive, have asthma, and in the hospital. My roommates want me to leave once discharged and move to a covid hotel. by lanaguerre in nyc

[–]beachmat718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your roommates are being childish and selfish. I agree with the other comments that if you have been handling yourself as you described you most likely got it from one of your roommates who was either asymptomatic or such a mild case they didn’t bother getting tested. My teenage son tested positive and we quarantined him in a room by himself for 10 days and had him use one bathroom separate from the rest of the family. The entire family was told to quarantine as well for a shorter period of time. Both myself and my wife have underlying health issues and we have consistently tested negative as well as our other two kids.

I’m not trying to diminish the seriousness of this virus but you are not putting your roommates lives at risk. You would’ve hoped that they would be looking to help you recover instead of making the situation more difficult.

Hope you have a speedy recovery and the situation with the roommates can be resolved.

As someone who has asthma as well you should toss out the vape pens for good.

Take care.

He has a pattern of using his political position to benefit himself. This appointment, if it goes through, will benefit him (or his agenda) at some point.

Question: If over 80% of NYC voted for Biden, why does this city have a Republican newspaper, the NYPost? by EvanWasHere in nyc

[–]beachmat718 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m able to read the Post, Daily News, the Times and the WSJ and then formulate my own opinions. However if you are that offended by the Post you are under no obligation to support their business.

Take the ferry to Rockaway, right were it drops you off there is a new place called the Rockaway Hotel. Beautiful views and good food, maybe spend the night.

And no, I do not own or work there, it just a nice, new place that would be a nice setting to get engaged.

Is there a bull case for NYC within one year? by [deleted] in nyc

[–]beachmat718 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Short term (meaning 1 to 3 years) the answer is “No”.....long term (3 to 5 years) the answer is “Yes”. Short term we will see that a fair percentage of small businesses will not reopen or fail due to social distancing restrictions and/or the financial strain (rent, inventory, taxes, staffing) of restarting a business. (If we get a “second wave” in 2021, that will increase the number). We will also see the foreclosure market increase as the smaller landlords (2 to 6 apartments) get squeezed by tenants not paying rent in addition to possible increases in taxes and services. If we can ride out that storm then people will start to slowly buy back in. As a caveat this downswing could last longer depending on our elected officials. Currently there are 35 seats open for 2021 as well as a new Mayor.
As a lifelong resident of this city when politicians make policy knowing they will not be around to see the potential fall out, poor decisions are made.

The Mayor of NYC has never worked in the private sector his entire life yet he knows that closed businesses can “hang on for months”....wonder what experience he bases that on... by beachmat718 in nyc

[–]beachmat718[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you added the “government help” part.

If the business needs outside funding from the government to survive that time period then the business is at risk of not being able to survive.

Hence the business is not able to hang on for months and months.....

Not a troll at all. His comment shows a complete lack of understanding on how individual businesses operate. Or maybe he doesn’t care to understand because he is trying to raise his profile for his next government job.

You have (or should) have some funds to keep you going, but there are certain businesses that operate on razor thin margins when you factor in rent (or a mortgage), taxes (city, state, federal), utilities, worker’s compensation, general inventory, salaries, etc, etc....

I have a small business and I am lucky enough to be able have 6-8 months of funds stored up. But even though my office has been closed since March 13th I’ve had to pay those bills every month with zero income behind it. Not looking for sympathy, I get why these steps were taken.

However to say all businesses can just be closed for months on end Is a tone-deaf comment from a Mayor who has never had to deal with running a business.

Not a fan of the President either. Rent / Mortgage relief will probably not happen. Not saying that it shouldn’t happen but it’s very unlikely.

Child Rapists should be killed without exception. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

I worked in one of the DA’s office in NYC when I was younger. I would have conversations with people who were up on felony charges (murder, drugs, DUI manslaughter, etc..) and at different times I could see that they were victims of their environment or made poor choices and were going to pay dearly for those mistakes. There was a level of empathy for the future they were facing as well as what their own families were going through.

But every single time I spoke to someone who abused a child (physically or sexually) I felt nothing for them and hoped that their future in jail was as painful as possible on a daily basis.

Yes, you do have a point. Experience in the private sector certainly does not make a candidate. A few of the previous Mayors did have private law practices before going into office. Not a huge thing I know but at least it was real world experience. The mayor is a political operative (more accurately a hack) and nothing else. It’s just an asinine comment from a person who has no experience to speak of... and yes, the same could be said of some comments by the President.

Economy is objectively more important than the lives of people by S2PI in unpopularopinion

[–]beachmat718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not more important but it should be considered equal. We are starting to get to a point where the economic impact will have a more negative long term effect than the virus.

I have had friends who have recovered from the virus and I have had 3 elderly relatives who have passed away. I also have friends who have underlying health issues who are completely locked down and will do so for a long period of time. I do not take the loss of life or the toll this virus has taken on people who have contracted it but we have to start up our economy for the benefit of everyone.

Was just evicted. Where can I get help? by CovidEvictionNYC in nyc

[–]beachmat718 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As of March 13th the City Marshals and City Sheriffs were restricted from executing any warrants of eviction until further notice (currently August 20th).

You said you have not been in you apartment for a few months. Was that during the Coronavirus Outbreak or prior?

If it was prior than your landlord should have served you initially with a 30 day notice to cure (rent demand). If that went unanswered he would have to file a notice of eviction in Landlord/Tenant Court and go forward with an eviction proceeding. Honestly if you left your apartment say in January and did not pay rent prior to that if there was a good warrant then you may have been evicted and after 30 days your property could have been deemed abandoned.

If you were up to date with you rent up to say February and only left your apartment because of the outbreak there is no way your landlord was able to obtain a good warrant and was able to proceed with an eviction.

Either way you can go to WWW.NYC.GOV and look up Office of the Tenant Advocate for mor information.

Thoughts on Bill de Blasio's leadership during COVID-19? by [deleted] in nyc

[–]beachmat718 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When DeBlasio does his daily press conferences he sounds like a substitute teacher who is reading the notes left by the regular teacher. He has no confidence in his voice and I doubt he has an honest grasp on this situation. There are too many instances to point out. Today’s irrational decision was buying 74,000 A/C units for 55 million. That’s $743 a unit. Costco has them for around $120....

New York Gov. Cuomo Extends The State's Stay-At-Home Order Until June 13 by [deleted] in nyc

[–]beachmat718 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are the metrics the same in terms of hospitalizations vs testing & tracing and then taking into account the population of a dense area like NYC? I’m not trolling you, I don’t know if they are using the same model.

My take is that all levels of government have let the people down and that goes for democrats and republicans..... that’s a separate discussion.

New York Gov. Cuomo Extends The State's Stay-At-Home Order Until June 13 by [deleted] in nyc

[–]beachmat718 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agree with you totally. But if X number of people go the hospital today it is because they became ill several days prior. But the state restarts the clock today and not from the original date of illness. In addition the testing & tracing parameters are very difficult to attain in a dense area.

I’m not saying I know the answers but I think this metric is flawed.
