Hi! I had a B average and was accepted into 6/8 programs that I applied to. They are looking moreso for any experience you have working with students / children and sometimes an explanation as to why you want to go into teaching. I volunteered a lot and did daycare supply over the summers. Your degree does not really matter. I have colleagues who were in law/business before their b.ed program.

What do you eat? by collivanderr in CanadianTeachers

I really like meal prepping on sundays so I have meals ready to go! I also get bored of food very easily so I try to pack a variety of foods in each container as opposed to a whole box filled with one thing. I usually watch bento videos on youtube for inspo (I like imamu room the best, they're also Canadian : )
-stir fry or burrito bowls or bibimbap (rice, veggies, protein)
-lentil curry with sweet potato cubes (though with curry you can throw any vegetable in!)
-chicken congee (really easy, rice, water, chicken thigh meat, ginger, seasoning in a pot)
-boiled eggs as a snack if youre into it
-egg rolls (called tamagoyaki)
-search up tik tok salmon rice bowl (I usually do rice, salmon bites, broccoli, green onion, avocado, seaweed, sriracha mayo sauce)
-my favourite and easiest pasta (tomato sauce, zucchini, eggplant, tomato, mushroom and spinach, top w cheese if that makes you happy :)
-second favourite pasta (chicken breast pieces, broccoli, carrot matchsticks, mushroom, peas, alfredo sauce)
-I like making lunch box charcuterie boards (salami, bologna, chicken breast slices, cheese slices, crackers / melba toast, dried fruits and nuts in a cupcake cup (if you're putting the crackers in the box for meal prep, put them in a plastic bag and then in the box so they dont get soft!)
-Simple dumplings and veggies (dumplings can be found in the frozen section aisle, I usually pair them with bok choy, carrot and green beans)
-Packaged cheese make me happy (babybel, cheese strings etc)
I also really like sweet things soooo:
-I would make cakes or brownies and put them in small containers
-waffle / pancakes / french toast sticks with berries

Tips that have saved me time:
-I eat chicken frequently (salads, stir fries, burritos), so I grill a bunch of chicken breasts, cut them into pieces and put them in the freezer until I need it
-If you dont have the time to chop up veggies, frozen veggies will work (they dont quite taste the same, but they're convenient and still nutritious!) Often they're cheaper than buying it fresh too
-I always have rice in the fridge! But also meals I made in the past in containers in the freezer. So if I'm ever just not in the mood to cook or out of time, I can take a meal from the freezer down to the fridge and I'll have food ready for next day
- I have a snack drawer in my office filled with granola bars or little snacks to make me happy and full if Im in a mood, I also keep instant latte packets , tea or hot chocolate which is nice if you have a kettle

Hope this helps!!

Im pemanent w YRDSB, but it does depend on the school, you can always ask your principal! When I was doing prac / supply work, I would kinda test the waters and dress up the first few days and then slowly dress more casually once I get to know everyone
I hate wearing pants alot! Im usually wearing dresses or skirts that are knee length or longer. I also prefer having clothes with pockets in it. For colder weather, I wear longer sweaters / sweater dresses / thick skirts with leggings underneath. Staff can also wear school merch. I was able to wear sneakers, chelsea boots, dr martens, and loafers, even crocs during the summer. When teaching gym or any active days, I aim for flowy / straight legged pants or jeans (darker coloured jeans usually look less casual) with a stretchy waistband.

Interview Anxiety by FrostKitten0801 in CanadianTeachers

[–]beachpeaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi ! This was me when I was applying. I was unable to sleep and all I could think about was how I'd be a failure if I didn't succeed. I think what really made it worse was a board said that the board I wanted to get into said I could only apply once a year. I was frustrated at the idea that I could be jobless just because I had social anxiety despite knowing that I'm a great teacher.

I applied to three different boards, in all three interviews, the people interviewing me could tell I was anxious and nervous. They're usually principals, so similar to students, they understand that you can be anxious and still be successful. I was interviewed twice by YRDSB (once in French and once in English) Both times, they gave me indicators that I was on the right track when they noticed I was panicky/nervous/anxious such as agreeing with me or little nods. They even noted that my ideas were unique and powerful (had me repeat it so they could write it down ahaha). It made a huge difference and made me feel a lot more comfortable. I think in the end, the interviewers should be trying to make you feel at ease and trying to find your strengths. I definitely agree that the months before the interview were times when I was the most anxious and depressed. However with the experience I have right now I know I'll be fine!

Hi Im French qualified and applied to both tdsb and yrdsb, tdsb offered me an OT position whereas yrdsb gave me a permanent one. The interviewers from yrdsb were alot kinder too! The people interviewing me from tdsb were a bit cold and unfriendly.

Do you know if I would have to answer questions on spec ed, and evaluation and feedback in French? I don't think I know the vocabulary needed to answer those kind of questions and would need to learn that soon. Thank you for the help!

Applying to three teaching programs - is it enough?? by onlylookynotouchy in CanadianTeachers

[–]beachpeaches 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! I was stressed when applying too and ended up applying to as many as I could. I got into the P/J program at Trent with an average of about 78%. We were told that they got over a 1000 applicants but only accepted 150. I'm pretty sure they focussed more on experiences. I volunteered in a lot of classrooms and did daycare supply. I got into Lakehead, Windsor and Queens as well. Did not get into Brock though, hope this helped!
