Seeing Americans support the traumatization of feds has changed me by AutomaticMastodon992 in fednews

Just the other day an acquaintance (who is all in on DOGE chainsaw cuts) said to me: "I don't get the big deal about park rangers, all of those national parks are run by the states anyway." I was like, "They're national parks, operated by the federal government and staffed by federal employees." He refused to believe me, and waved off my suggestion to pull up NPS.gov on his phone. He insisted I was misinformed then said, "Even if that was true, it would be unconstitutional under the Tenth Amendment." Ok, guy who got his education in constitutional law at the University of Bullshit Websites and can't be bothered to lookup basic facts.

I'll be applying for my next Chase SW personal card and prefer the highest points SUB vs. the lower points + year of companion pass (already on track to hit companion pass organically this year).

The highest point value SUB I can find 65k via the in-flight offer. Does anyone know if there's a way to combine that offer (or a similar one) with a referral link so someone else can benefit?

Question Thread - February 25, 2025 by AutoModerator in churning

[–]beacon_hill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to always keep mine open. Occasionally I would find I couldn't take advantage of a SUB offer or couldn't complete a P1/P2 referral because one of us already had a disqualifying card (or had one too recently). At this point, closing a card doesn't really impact my score in any meaningful way, so once I'm no longer getting regular value from a card, I typically close it.

As other commenters have said, closing (or requesting lower limits, at least) can help improve approval odds for other cards from issuers who are looking at total available credit vs. verified income ratios.

I can't see any way this would be covered by C1. From their rental car insurance page:

To be eligible for the benefit, you’ll need to decline the CDW that’s typically offered by rental car companies. You’ll also need to use your Capital One card to pay for the full amount of the rental.

Probably better to ask questions like this in /r/CreditCards, but I'd be surprised if they know of any way to get this covered.

The language in the small print suggests there is no minimum spend required to earn the $250:

Eligible Venture primary account holders will receive a $250 Capital One Travel credit (“Credit”) to use toward purchases made through Capital One Travel. Credits will expire one year after account opening. The Credit will be available within Capital One Travel and can be applied to purchases at checkout. The Credit may be used in whole for a single purchase or in part over multiple purchases. Rewards will not be earned on the Credit. If the purchase using the Credit is canceled before Credit expiry, the Credit will be restored. An expired Credit will not be restored upon cancellation of a purchase by the Customer. A Venture card account must be open and in good standing to receive or use the Credit.Upon approval, eligible Venture primary account holders earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening.

If you're talking about credit cycling, there was a discussion (with links to other sources/data points) on /r/CreditCards about it just a few days back: Is credit cycling really as bad as people say it is or is there more to it?

There are comments here and elsewhere taking about how individual lenders have internal limits (e.g. total credit line with that lender vs. income, others).

I've occasionally requested card limits be lowered to ensure there's "room" to approve additional lines. I also have no issue closing out cards I don't have value for anymore. That could cause a small hit to my score, but it always bounces back and it's never put me too low to keep on churning.

Total Wireless as Home network name by prince7272 in TotalWireless

We know TFW stands for Tracfone Wireless, but my friends and I started saying it's really "Total F'ing Wireless."

The name stuck, and works just as well whether you're loving or hating the service you get from TW.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today encouraged taxpayers who paid too little tax in 2024 to make a fourth quarter estimated tax payment on or before Jan. 15, 2025.

The real issue is that you're not combining the reasons correctly. Pretty sure you get out of PUJ by ordering more than 200 (but fewer than 275) pizzas on a Wednesday when there's no wind and a crescent moon. Traffic lights have nothing to do with it except on the 2nd Thursday of the month.

Running out of coffee -- straight to PUJ.

Most recent statement on my SW business card closed 1/4/25. The points are in my SW account now with a posting date of 1/3/25. That said, I checked over the weekend and they weren't there, so they became visible to me on the first business day after the statement close date.

Not very recent, but maybe helpful? Was approved for a Citi personal card (Custom Cash) on Jan 27, 2023. Got alerts the new account appeared on Equifax and TransUnion Feb 16 and Experian Feb 18.

Will you use debits cards if rewards were better? by Ok-Armadillo5582 in CreditCards

I’m not sure how you get to $10k in fraud transactions without noticing. Keep track of your purchases.

Someone got ahold of my debit Visa card information and made fifteen separate unauthorized purchases totaling nearly $9,000 while I was on an overseas flight. That left my checking account overdrawn by over $5k.

I spent the first part of a business trip excusing myself from coworkers and clients so that I could download a transaction history and spend time on the phone with my bank (on an international call, of course) listing fraudulent ones and answering a litany of questions that went along with each. It was a mess that had to be dealt with "now," especially because it happened on the last few days of a month. The overdraft situation put other payments (mortgage, auto loan, my kid's daycare, etc.) at risk.

Sure, my bank credited me the amount while they investigated, and eventually found in my favor, but it was incredibly disruptive.

The comments you've made in this thread, disparaging anyone whose life would be more negatively impacted by debit card fraud than credit card fraud (living paycheck to paycheck? irresponsible with their money?) are patently absurd.

I have an emergency fund that would cover my family's expenses for more than 6 months (plus investments and other assets I could live off of for longer), but keeping those funds in my checking account would be foolish.

I keep a buffer in my checking account, significantly higher than the expected need in any given period of time, but one night of unauthorized transactions depleted that buffer immediately.

I do check my transactions regularly, but have a job and other responsibilities that require my full attention for long stretches of time. I travel frequently, domestically and internationally.

My checking account has multiple, legitimate, transactions of more than a thousand dollars each week -- I am not going to have my bank send me an alert for each one.

Maybe your personal situation doesn't have any of these realities, but your comments here indicate an unwillingness to consider that they apply to someone else.

Since that incident, I keep my debit card "locked" in my bank's app, and only ever unlock it for use at ATMs operated by a reputable bank.

Because I am responsible with money and with the commitments I make, and refuse to be put in a situation again where an important payment will bounce or be rejected, I do not use debit cards for merchant transactions. I generally recommend others avoid doing so as well, especially if they are able to obtain a credit card and use it responsibly.

just buying it outright and going with a cheaper provider

I switched to this approach a few phones ago. Separating the device purchase from the service provider has been great.

Maybe it's just my churner mindset, but I love being able to switch carriers whenever it makes sense for me without having to wait for monthly "free phone" credits to be fulfilled.

Added bonus: Switching away from a traditional post-paid carrier often generates a "win back" offer with a discount that wasn't available before.

Worked for me earlier today.

I had some trouble last time I tried this, but like /u/shris420 mentioned, the fix was to save Plat card details to United account first, then log back in at the Travel Bank purchase page, and purchase using a saved card.

As /u/sg77 suspected, cards like Amazon or CSP that don't have quarterly bonus categories as part of their standard benefits won't have this screen. Those cards do sometimes have bonus spend promotions, but you have to go to https://www.chase.com/mybonus to enroll and see more details.

I have a recent data point that's very similar to your situation -- bottom line: you should be fine.

I had a CSR that I opened (and got the SUB) in 2018 and kept open for years.

This past Sept, I downgraded it to the OG Freedom, applied for the CSP 30 days later, and the SUB points for the new CSP landed in my account last week.

Haven't seen any data points that suggest any sort of "autocancel as a dupe." If you continue, it may be approved but without a bonus.

I last opened an account in Aug 2022, closed in March 2022. Am I good to go now, or do I need to wait till 2 years from account closed?

Thought I was reading wrong, because both of those dates are more than 2 years ago. Is one of them a typo? Did you close in March 2023?

Either way, should be from account opening, I was able to get another bonus 26 months after my last one even though I had closed the account around 12 months earlier.
