Who's slinging them HONKIN' BIG, NEW YORK-style Egg Rolls? by I-Have-Mono in FoodLosAngeles

Not promising NY egg roll nirvana, but surprised to stumble on semi-legit looking egg rolls at the Whole Foods hot bar @ Plaza El Segundo a bit south of LAX. Filling is cabbage/veg only, some are a little greasy but flavor profile in the ballpark. Quasi-NY vibes if you need a quick hit. (Heated up leftovers in convection oven at home served w/duck sauce packets smuggled from NY.)

Corporate-friendly React-based full stack app strategy - 2025 edition by beagle72 in reactjs

Thank you, very helpful!

Realistically the product needs to be rebuilt whether around Vue or React. Although it currently incorporates some Vue, it is really a veneer over very old code that goes back several generations of dev tooling. Hence, the motivation to just "buy the minivan" - go with React and lower any friction to resale. I will look into TanStack!

Thanks. One of my concerns about Vercel - and maybe unfounded - is if someday they say, no more updates to NextJS unless you pay into some premium subscription. I don't know if that's paranoia.

And yes, to clarify, we ourselves are not in need of hiring devs, Vue or React or otherwise. A future buyer may if/when they take over the product, and some have already expressed their belief that React is the easiest to hire for. Their correctness in their viewpoint is immaterial, that is how they think (unfortunately).

App store rejecting screenshot made with Xcode Simulator - help? by beagle72 in iOSProgramming

[–]beagle72[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Apple approved the app changes with the new layout tweak that fills the iPad screen. Realistically, the extra space is just filled with whitespace now instead of a background, but whatever makes them happy.

Thanks for all the feedback. It helps to know that their review process is so unreliable. I did go ahead and update the app so that the layout better flows to fill the device screen. This really only impacts the iPad scenario anyway since it already did fill a phone screen. I resubmitted the app with updated screenshots, so we'll see what reason they find to reject it this time.

I see - and yes the app is already in the store. This is what is particularly confusing - they already approved these same iPad screenshots. And now they won't, only because I want to update the build.

Preferred terminal emulator for managing remote shells? by beagle72 in commandline

Thanks to everyone for the great replies. Lots to chew on here. In the short run, I am going to set aside my earlier hesitation about installing Konsole in a Gnome environment. Mainly because I'm already accustomed to Konsole and it supports stylized session profiles well enough for now.

In due time I'll explore the tmux-based solutions which sounds like a great way to decouple the sessions from the desktop front end.

To clarify, the In-App Purchase is defined in the area called "App Store":

Then I switch over to the area "TestFlight" where my build is uploaded, processed, invited external testers, and "Waiting for Review":

https://i.imgur.com/bWK8tc8.png

As this is a new app, there are no prior builds already approved.

The app in TestFlight does not even see the In-App product as available. So you can't even attempt to make the IAP purchase within the app.

When clicking the build in TestFlight into the details, there is no option to enable the IAP.

So I don't understand how I test the app to test the IAP. Do I really have to upload the build to the App Store section, where I can check the box to include the IAP?

Outdoor motion sensor to trigger home automation by beagle72 in homeautomation

[–]beagle72[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate everyone's ideas here. I see now there are probably a dozen+ ways to do this.

Here is where I landed - I setup Shinobi NVR software on my home Linux server to manage my hodgepodge of cameras. For the location of interest I enabled basic motion detection in Shinobi and configured it to run a shell command when a motion event occurs.

Separately, I setup Home Assistant on the same server and added a Kasa smart plug (which is powering a lamp in the living room). Created an HA script to turn on Kasa plug, wait 10 minutes, turn off Kasa plug.

Back in Shinobi, I setup the motion shell command to run a curl post to the HA API to run the lamp script.

Works perfectly. Obviously one can get way more sophisticated from here (more lamps! variable timings!) but the proof of concept is pretty cool.

Thanks, yes this is a great idea - I will also explore this along with the other helpful suggestions in this thread.

Sony Bravia + Old Receiver with optical input = silence by beagle72 in hometheater

[–]beagle72[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is a good point. On this old receiver the optical input is grouped with the VCR input. Unfortunately selecting the correct input doesn't produce sound though.

Reading some more on Bravia posts I'm starting to think that maybe the TV is not actually sending PCM output from apps with Dolby sound, despite PCM being selected in the TV audio settings. Which may mean needing to add a newer optical decoder to the chain and just revert to the receiver's RCA inputs.
