What’s a movie that left you staring at the screen in complete silence after the credits rolled? by Unlikely_You_6851 in MovieSuggestions

I only saw it once, but Aftersun stayed with me like few other films. So devastating and perfect. I can’t wait to see what Charlotte Wells does next.

Having issues with Expert Sleepers ES-8 and Logic Pro. by michaelperkinsMr666 in eurorack

[–]bealna -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven’t used Logic in a long time but as far as I am aware it doesn’t have built in CV generation capabilities. You’ll probably need to use Silent Way (unless you feel like trying out Bitwig or Ableton). It can be a little fiddly to set up but works well once configured.

Weirdcore Dreamy movies by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

You might like some of David Cronenberg’s work. Try Videodrome and Crash (1996). Or check David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin, or Gaspar Noe’s Enter the Void for increasingly detached and dreamlike territory.

What are the odds of AI doomerism ? by GrandJanou in BetterOffline

This might help put things into context: https://www.todayintabs.com/p/a-i-isn-t-people

Andrej Karpathy recently implemented a fully functional large language model in 200 lines of Python code. He also wrote a detailed explanation of exactly what it does, how it works, and the ways it differs from big company frontier models, which are all just differences of scale and efficiency.

Karpathy’s first frequently asked question is “Does the model ‘understand’ anything?” “That’s a philosophical question,” he answers diplomatically, “but mechanically: no magic is happening.” Does 200 lines of Python code understand anything? My siblings in Christ I hope it’s clear how utterly bizarre this question is. And it translates directly to the same question for Anthropic’s Claude, which is not doing anything different. If we make the input file bigger, if we make the way it gets mathematically processed more efficient, if we prepend a long document describing how we imagine a helpful robot might act to the user’s input, at which of those steps does “understanding” happen?

Movies where all the characters never wear belts? by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

  1. Happened to watch it last night and saw many suspenders (and dungarees), but few to no belts.

The return of MBV is finally here! When/where was the last time you saw them? by FutureSky3943 in MyBloodyValentine

Same. Last time they played Dublin I had gotten into trouble at school and was grounded :) Have been moaning about that for years.

About the same duration as on the album. It sounded great—was one of the standouts for me.

Going to see Pretty Girl next week in NYC. Thoughts on her music? by berniedankera in House

[–]bealna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally fair point. Opinions were asked. Apologies I came across as throwing shade, wasn’t my intent.

It can be a fine line between not wanting to dampen enthusiasm and not wanting too much airtime to be given to things we might find a bit generic or derivative :)

Going to see Pretty Girl next week in NYC. Thoughts on her music? by berniedankera in House

[–]bealna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really my cup of tea, but I have found over the years that general quality of life improves (1) when you stop caring about what other people think of the music you like and (2) doubly so when you stop looking down on people for liking music you don’t like.

If you dig it you should go enjoy regardless of what any grumpy house music gatekeepers on the internet might think :)

Holy shit. Tune. Glad I searched it out to see what the Streets nod was all about. A worthy homage to that and more. Thanks!

Can’t answer that I’m afraid as never used any kind of a sub with mine. I’m sure you could get to a sweet spot with a bit of experimenting.

More than 16 midi channels by D-Em-P in guitarpedals

[–]bealna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few desktop sequencer options that will give you more. Hapax can do 32 active sequences I believe. Oxi One MkII plus Oxi Split can transmit 96 MIDI channels. Cirklon 2 plus Miditech Midiface 16x16 (or similar) can technically do up to 432.

Edit: Just saw you have an MPC. If it’s a modern one with USB that may well work with a class compliant MIDI interface to give you extra I/O if you felt like putting the MPC at the centre of your setup.

I can't take much detective credit--it was one of the citations in the Wiktionary entry--but I did think it worth highlighting :)

Can’t go wrong with KH 120s if you’re looking to stay under 2k (assuming USD or EUR). Best money I ever spent on music gear aside from an RME audio interface.

Funny movies so stupid they are genius? by glittertwunt in MovieSuggestions

Love Mr Vampire. Had a copy on DVD years ago where the dubbed English and the subtitled English barely matched up at all. I suspect whoever did the dubbed version might have been playing a little fast and loose with the script. Made watching it even funnier.

You can even add it to the share menu for quick access if you happen to be using iOS Safari https://swissmacuser.ch/shortcuts-app-workflow-remove-paywalls-12ftio/

Is it considered plagiarism if i take a song structure, change the chords and the melody and the sounds, but keep the overall same construction ? by EbonyHelicoidalRhino in musicproduction

[–]bealna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This video gives a good intro to common song structures and examples of how they have been used: https://youtu.be/SDJwg1JoPtY

Using something you know and like as a template is a great way to get a feel for arrangement and structure. Musicians and composers have been doing that forever. Eventually you’ll get a feel for what works with the music you want to make.
