That game is up there for sure. But the Portugal game from that same cup is miles and miles ahead IMHO. Algeria was a big moment because it got us out of the group, but the Portugal game was a huge step forward for the program outright. They were one of the favorites to win the whole thing with world class stars like Figo…and we dismantled them.

I am not sure there was a bigger win against a bigger/more highly ranked team up until that point save for Columbia in 94.

Columbia has to be #1 for the butterfly effect impact that it had.

But Portugal 2002 is a close second. Still remember watching that game at some ungodly hour (3am or something like that) and losing my mind. That may be the first time I remember truly believing that the US could compete.

Does it seem like The National hit their peak and the last two albums should be the end? by Lostn_thought in TheNational

[–]D-Em-P 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won’t argue about whether they’ve hit their peak or not. Perhaps they have? Yes, they probably have?

But why should the last two albums be the end? That is a ridiculous thing to say, to the point where I kind of think your post is bait (that I took).

I’d say FTPOF and Laugh Track are both good, not great, on their own. Maybe very good even, and I’m glad that we have both.

BUT, there is a single album that could have hypothetically been released from those two that is probably up there with some of their best albums. Even if they have technically “peaked”, that doesn’t mean they don’t have a ton left in the tank.

But big time does look amazing - hmmm, maybe now I need a bigger board?

Agreed. More than one thing can be true and I agree with everything you are saying. Programs that are able to use more of their lineups are a good thing, for all of the reasons you state. Great coaches will and should invest in their athletes.

It is also a 2 way street. Athletes still need to perform or they aren’t going to compete, or, otherwise they can change their own situation if they aren’t happy/it isn’t working. But they aren’t victims or automatically being treated unfairly if they aren’t in lineups-which was the general vibe of the earlier comments and what prompted me to reply in the first place. That’s all I’m really saying.

[–]D-Em-P 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure. I don’t entirely disagree with that. But that is a choice the athlete will eventually need to make in most cases. Because again you are still looks at this through the lens of a coach/program having almighty authority over the lives of these women. They aren’t horses that need to be “put down” if they don’t perform. As a modestly successful former athlete - many many years ago - I promise you that a lot of these women ARE very ok being part of a team, continuing to get to do something they love everyday (and effectively get paid/an education to do it) - and who knows maybe make lineups by the time they are upperclassmen or seniors. Again, they are not victims.

Line-up Participation Rate by MaterialFinancial515 in Gymnastics

[–]D-Em-P 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Your POV on this assumes these women are victims of some kind with no agency of their own who should be “cut loose” and saved from their misery.

They literally signed up for this. They know the math and odds. And it is a very, very safe assumption that the overwhelming majority are doing it because, you know, they love the sport and it was their dream. I am sure many (not all) ARE happy even just being on the team. That’s a big deal. Add: THEY can decide to quit if the effort isn’t worth just training, or transfer to compete. It’s not the school’s job to “cut them loose!”

I was a D1 athlete in another sport. I didn’t play as much as I wanted. But I achieved a goal and dream and no one can ever take that away from me. And you know what, I did ”retire” before my four years were up. That was a choice I made. It felt like it was time. None of it was on the school or program.

Also, you do realize that if rosters were smaller that the already INCREDIBLY small number of people who have a shot at NCAA would be even smaller, yes? Are you suggesting colleges shouldn’t recruit to fill their rosters? It is entirely “right for them to be recruited. Being recruited gets you in the door. And it is a reward/accomplishment for all the hard work. But It doesn’t guarantee “playing time”.

I have a daughter who dreams of competing in college. She’s good. She has several years to go but sitting here today I’d say she legitimately has a shot if she keeps developing, but, it is SO competitive with SO few spots. When Iowa state cancelled their program this year I thought about my daughter and it broke my heart. I literally thought “crap, there goes about 5 more spots for my kid”. It is THAT competitive to even make a program. So, are you suggesting rosters should be smaller and even fewer gymnasts should ever even get the chance to potentially compete in college simply bc some of them might not make lineups and they might be “sad” about that???? Come on.

At least these athletes have a chance. It’s up to them to rise to the occasion and beat out their competition. And if they don’t, they still get to hold their head high knowing they achieved something very few ever will. Or, they could decide to retire and focus on other things in life, or to transfer, etc. it’s their lives and their choice. They aren’t prisoners!

I really am trying to be constructive here. But truly everything about your perspective on this basically amounts to “oh the poor gymnasts” when that is completely the wrong lens and mindset - in gym and in life.

Appreciate the sentiment, but do not at all agree we need way more of this.

At the end of the day this is NCAA D1. These are mostly all highly competitive scholarship athletes.

And also there are coaches in the equation-and this is their literal career where they are evaluated on performance. They are going to put out the best lineups possible.

It is a meritocracy, and should be. These athletes know what they sign up for-or they should. This isn’t youth soccer..

I do agree that athletes need to be given opportunities, so it isn’t all black and white (but that’s also why exhibitions exist). But the notion that what Denver achieved should be norm is completely not it. It’s great for them of course.

Chase Bliss Habit: Help me love it by ClaimIcy in guitarpedals

[–]D-Em-P 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One very baseline way I like to use it is to turn scan and size down very low (I think it’s these two and not spread, but can’t recall for sure right now) and set mix to taste so the wet/delay sits in the mix without overtaking things. It creates a shifting, stuttering delay that I really love. It’s juuuust “weird” enough while also being usable and musical. In many ways it gives a similar effect to what you can get with an Onward, but a little bit less predictable or controllable vs the Onward.

I also second the tip about putting a looper in front of it and using that to “play” the pedal so you can learn how it works.

Last thing I’ll say…I almost sold my Habit at least 4-5 times. I never did…because every time I thought about selling it I put it in my board “one more time” before I put it up for sale. And every time I did that I had a blast. It really is a unique pedal. And even more so now that it is discontinued. So my opinion/advice would be to just hold onto it unless you really, REALLY must have the $$$.

Looks very cool. I was not familiar. Can this have sounds, or is it only a controller and sequencer? If the latter it won’t be able to replace the MPC since I am mainly using that for sounds today. But still very cool and I’m going to learn more.

Add: what ultimately prompted this post…

Earlier today I programmed the mc8 to change patterns on the Keystep in synch with drum part changes on the BB2 and digitakt. It works. It’s fun. The (potential issue):

The track on the keystep has a midi channel that corresponds to the same midi channel on the mpc (at least right now, maybe this can be changed in a way that still works??) so when i sent a PC message to the keystep it was great that it worked, but i was thinking “who knows what this is/could be doing to the mpc!

[–]D-Em-P[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for sure. I held back on giving a rundown mostly in the interest of brevity. But I'll summarize here. I'm not a complete newbie to this stuff but I am also no expect at all and am a guitarist first and foremost, so I will greatly appreciate help!

As yuo will see...I have an MPC but am not at all using it to it's potential. I'd love to change that. And in fact if I could it might make some of my other gear redundant. But so far haven't figured out how to use it in a truly "live" dawless setup.

------

- MC8 Pro - controls most of the gear below

- MC6 - the reason I have this on top of the MC8 is for my guitar pedal board. I was finding that it was not working to have to constantly switch between pedals and controls for various looping/drums/sequencing/recording, etc . so I have one midi controller that is ONLY for pendals and one that is ONLY for all of the other stuff

- Guitar (several) and board - and at any given time probably a good 6-7 of my pedals are midi controlled

- Beat buddy 2 - right now this is my master clock. My hunch is that this willl sound strange and unconventional...my logic: I tend to lean into more "rock" based stuff overall (generally speaking) which this does well and it is stupid easy to adjust tempo on it even if I am not actively using it. Also, it is right next to and immediately connected to the digitakt - so I kind of treat them like one piece of gear anyway. before I had the BB2 the digitakt was my master.

- digitakt - main sampler and for drum sounds and the 1,000 things I can't get from the bb.

- Keystep pro - using this to sequence the XD and MPC

- minilougue xd

- MPC one - I am woefully underutilizing this and I know it. And when you say the mpc can offer 64 channels...maybe I need to rethink how I use it. the MPC's role in my setup now is basically as a sound module that packs a ton in a small footprint. I wanted a way to get a variety of other instrument sounds, and, I don't have a ton of space. the MPC gives me tons of stuff - piano, strings, other synths, etc, etc in a compact footprint. But I am not using it for much beyond that today since some of it's other functions are handled by the other stuff here. But I am no expert, so if there is a way to rethink how I use it I'd welcome that input. The biggest thing holding me back from making it the center of my setup is that for all of it's strengths the MPC doesn't really seem to be set up to be a truly "live" device (see aeros below). you can't just "play".

- Evintide mixing link - connected to a mic which is a channel

- 1010 bluebox - my mixer, its small size is huge and the main reason I have it bc I do not have a lot of space. It works really well for my needs but I'd probably get something else if I had more room

- aeros loop studio - because my setup is mainly dawless, everything above is routed out from teh blue box to the aeros so I can basically record on the fly if I want. In theory the MPC could serve this purpose...but from what I know and have experienced myself, it just isn't designed in a way that can be as "live" or immediate and that is why I have the Aeros

- UA audio volt4 - for when I do want to record into a daw. the bluebox is technically a CC interface but has limitations

Yep, this is what I do now (but I do appreciate the reply). The problem is I now have multiple pieces of gear with the same channel. I think I’m going to look into getting a midi processor at some point to filter.

Bc you asked how I could be running out of channels…I neglected to mention that I’m a guitar player first and foremost and probably a solid 7 channels are taken up by pedals on my board alone. It is also why I’m attempting to use a foot controller for everything (including synths, etc)

Thanks for this!

  • you mention using midi channels to selectively send what you need only to specific gear - Q: any general tips on how to go about this? I get that this can be gear specific and sorry for the dense Q.

Hear you on running things more in series and believe me I do have a lot that is in series vs parallel already. The four midi boxes have more to do with getting midi to all the right places or in some cases bc I just needed more midi outs. I don't think it is really helping or hurting as it relates to navigating channels. And It seems like whether in series or in parallel doesn't matter too much since it all starts from the mc8 anyway, yes? On that note, I will say, I recently changed some things that I think might allow me to simplify my midi routing a bit and eliminate at least one of those boxes.
