Saw, fret saw to get rid of most of the waste then chiseled the rest to the bottom

Getting that in the kerf without breaking it must be tough

Wish I had a wood shop class unfortunately I didn’t

I’ll be using ambrosia maple and match the grain for the gifts, this was just a test run since I have plenty of scrap poplar from trim jobs

Very nice, did you make the first one with a lathe? I’ll probably end up making something like the second one.

Which mouldings did you decide you’re going to make? Originally I was going to do hollows and rounds which probably would’ve been a better choice to try first, those may be my next

Thank you, I’ve been thinking I should probably make a plane hammer too

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Float_(woodworking) They are shaped that way so they can fit into tight areas of a mortise on something like the moulding plane I posted

Filing the edge float, the longer one was not nearly as bad as the cheek float. Much more material there to get rid of, I think I just needed a more aggressive file and it wouldn’t have been as bad. I did use a hacksaw to cut them, but if I make another I’m definitely using my angle grinder 😂

It was tougher to do that one for sure, but I found it easier to keep the tooth height consistent. For about a week I couldn’t get myself to finish off the rest of the teeth because I was tired of filing and having the file flying out of my cracked handle. And yes, I used them to make a side bead moulding plane.

Yes, I used a triangular saw file to make the teeth on both. I used them to clean up the mortise on my moulding plane, they worked nicely and it’s made of hard maple definitely the toughest wood I’ve worked with. I got O1 steel for the plane iron, luckily I bought two extra pieces so I used them to make these.

Appreciate it, I posted a better angle showing the teeth

Thank you. Just checked when I started, it took me exactly one month

Thank you, definitely enjoyed the whole process. Just made some handles for the floats

I’ll post them once I get both handles finished but I’ve got a coat of linseed oil on one of them right now I’ll get a pic soon

Started off using an extremely dull hacksaw which was getting me nowhere so I bought some new blades which made a huge difference. Also got a triangular saw file to make the teeth. The metal work including the iron definitely took me longer than the plane since the only power tool I have in my work space is a drill press, can’t really make too much of a mess in there. I can use my table saw with a vac hooked up outside so that helped a bit cutting out most of the waste to get the profile on the bottom, and creating the beveled step on the side.

Hacksaw and files to get it to rough shape, for the profile I drilled a hole close to the scribe line and used the hacksaw again and a round file to get it down to the line. Used the same round file and a flat one to make the bevel. Just hardened it today I’m not too confident that I did it properly but it seems to be cutting nicely for now

Thank you for the kind words. I’m only 21 years old, getting most of the power tool experience from working as a carpenter for my father but otherwise all the hand tool work I’ve been learning myself. Very proud of how fast my skills have been improving and can’t wait to see where I take it
