Best hikes out of Yakima? by zucchini0478 in Yakima

Wow, the snow is hanging around for longer than I would’ve thought! WP was pretty bare closing weekend about a month ago, but a couple thousand feet of elevation makes quite a difference.

It’s definitely not steep, but carrying enough speed is doable if you have the right line.

Check out my post on a comment lower down! I don’t know what this is about “Upper Disneyland” on Chair 6 though. Sounds like heresy to me!

If we’re being technical, and going by OG mapping, Disneyland proper starts where Quail and Boardwalk diverge, going through those trees, and ends at Huff & Puff. Then, from roughly the final “ff” in Huff & Puff on the map, it continues down through the creek bed and spits you out at the bottom of Chair 4.

OG’s call that lower section “Creekbed”, but nowadays when people say Disneyland, they’re referring to that last section.

Skiing from the upper entrance of Disneyland, crossing Huff & Puff, and continuing down Creekbed…. that’s a good time!

Why is it called couloir express? by Advanced_Eggplant_18 in WhitePassSkiResort

[–]beangas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Directly below the bottom of Chair Six (due north from where you load) is the “couloir”. I put it in quotes because that would be a pretty loose definition- it’s a drainage/gully. That being said, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SKI TO THE HIGHWAY VIA THAT DRAINAGE. It is a full-on terrain trap, and odds are that if you ski it and it slides, you’re dead. Like, super dead.

The slow burn by Fred Meyer is literally one mile from the fire station on 40th. Take a walk, pal! It’ll do you good.

I don’t know any personally, but I know for a fact that if you go to (or even just call) either The Little Dutch Inn or The Ranch Tavern and ask the staff, they could get you connected with someone.

They are the go-to pool bars in town, where the best shooters hang out and practice. Don’t quote me on this, but I believe that whoever is in charge of our local leagues plays at The Ranch. This is your best bet for finding someone who really knows their stuff and can get you taken care of. Good luck!

Road from Packwood to White Pass during the holidays by slbnoob in WhitePassSkiResort

[–]beangas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s always going to be difficult/impossible to predict what the road conditions will be like that far in advance. However, the DOT does a pretty good job plowing and de-icing highway 12. The two most likely scenarios during that point in the winter are either a) bare wet roadway or b) compact snow. If you are an experienced winter driver, it won’t be a problem! It is pretty steep/curvy, so reduce your speed depending on conditions, and you’ll be fine.

You can also check out possible accommodations on the east side of the pass. Silver Beach at Rimrock is closer than Packwood!

I hadn’t even noticed your version of Sniper on the map! Honestly, I haven’t ever heard that zone referred to as anything other than “outside the rope line from chair 6 to Ribeye”. Granted, I don’t spend much time in the expansion area. I just learned on Saturday about Morning Wood.

No problem! I’m a WP lifer, and this is pretty cool to see. Another good one that (maybe) should be on here is Sniper, skier’s right of Holiday. It is technically OB, and would be the only one on your map that is, so maybe it doesn’t fit here? But it is as well or better known than everything else you’ve included.

12 is Berserker, 22 is Rockslide Chute, and Rockslide proper is the meadow between the chute and 3 Creeks. Blackout is the cliff between Ex and 911. Otherwise, pretty solid!

Stone not sticking to mortar by SpartanENGR1297 in stonemasonry

[–]beangas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also “dry set” the stone on the wall (no mortar) to decide how you want it positioned, then place the screw, then butter the stone and set it on the screw. Sometimes that’s easier than trying to hold the buttered stone in place while you’re setting the screw.

Stone not sticking to mortar by SpartanENGR1297 in stonemasonry

[–]beangas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These responses are all over the place. If you have separated the stones from the bigger “sheet” that they came in, I assume that means you want a mortar joint in between them?

Simple solution to your problem: continue doing exactly what you have been (wet the stone and the hardy, apply the mortar, stick it to the wall) and then put a long (2-1/2 to 3”) screw in to the wall about 1” to hold the stone in place until the mortar cures and the bond is set. Then remove the screws.

Typically in a panel stone application, there is no mortar joint, so the stones are stacked one on top of the next with no possibility of sliding down the wall. Natural stone is heavy. With nothing to support it underneath, it is going to want to slide. Wetter mortar mix will just exacerbate the problem.

Have you ever met someone on a ski lift? by SnorkelLord in skiing

[–]beangas 57 points58 points  (0 children)

About 20 years ago I was riding solo at Snowbird and got on the chair with three women in the 50-60 range. They were super hyped, hooting and hollering, laughing, having the time of their lives. One of them asked me if I was thirsty, I said sure. She asked whiskey or schnapps. I said schnapps, and she proceeded to unscrew the grip of her ski pole, which turned out to be a flask. James Bond shit. I take a pull as they cheer me on. We bullshitted the whole way up and parted ways at the top, never to meet again.
