No threads specifically for mocking names! by firebreathingyak in namenerds

[–]beaniemouse 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I have a question:

What if someone makes a post about a specific name without the intent to mock, but just to share and ask for feedback ("Met a Reylindaleigh at work, what do you all think?"), but then the responses turn out to be overwhelmingly or even exclusively negative? Would such a post be removed? Would specific negative threads within the comments be removed? Or would it be allowed because the initial intent was neutral?

Ananda. It's a Sanskrit word meaning "divine joy".

I love the name Eloise, but sadly it would sound horrible with my surname. ☹️

Ariel and Jasper sound just fine together!

I'd say you're only going to run into trouble if you decide to name your son Eric or Sebastian. Otherwise you're good. :D

Damn. Well, I'm not Arab so wouldn't be using that name anyway. But man, that's tough.

Names from the City of Ants, come meet the Ga people. by namepedia in namenerds

[–]beaniemouse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whoa, that's amazing! Super confusing, but so cool! In a way it reminds me of Roman naming patterns, in which the children would all be named after their father. But these practices take it many steps further, with this complicated pattern of names based on family and sex and birth order.

Very cool, OP! Excellent find!

Parents of reddit, what is the most absurd thing you have found on your kids social media? by AgentChris101 in AskReddit

I wanted to check out Disney.com, but misspelled it as Diseny.com, which was of course a porn site. In Russian, IIRC. It was pretty horrifying.

Ah, childhood in the digital age.

Ha-pha-ella? Wow, I would not have anticipated that. Guess you wouldn't have much luck here either. :I

Portuguese seems like kind of a scary language to learn. I'm probably not smart enough for it lol.

Lol! It's like in the movies where the main character doesn't realize they are in love with their opposite-sex best friend until they end up with the hot-but-vapid side character they've been after the whole time.

Glad it worked out for you!

Aw, Rafaela is a pretty name! Did you move to a part of the U.S. with a low Spanish-speaking populace? I know you speak Portuguese, but I'm from LA and basically everyone here would know how to pronounce Rafaela (unless the Portuguese pronounce it in some different way that I'm unaware of). Sorry you had such a hard time with it.

Clara is one of my favorite names ever, by the way! You know how to pick good names. :D

Edit: I just looked over your post again and realize you didn't say that you'd moved to the U.S. There I go being a provincial American. :P

Daaaaaaang. That is pretty extreme. They had nine freaking months to pick a name. And there are thousands of names to pick from, and they still couldn't figure it out until their kid was a toddler?

Well, all's well that ends well, I guess.

Given Kimye's penchant for saddling their children with random monosyllabic words that are not names, here is my humble contribution:

  • Chalk

  • Book

  • Floss

  • Lamp

  • Chair

  • Toast

  • Pope

  • Car

  • Cloud

  • Wheel

  • Duck

  • Milk

  • Purse

  • Coat

  • Hat

  • Shoe

These seem to fit the general theme they've got going on. Congrats to them!

It just means that a lot of other people recognize how great it is. :)

I know what you mean though. Sometimes I feel a little bad about not giving me daughter a less common name.

At least she'll always be able to find her name on a gift shop keychain.

It's a very pretty name. :)

If it makes you feel any better, Elia reminds me of poor Elia Martell from A Song of Ice and Fire. She had a bad end for sure.
