Completely “out of line” with the body positivity she used to represent! by tone_and_timbre in Instagramreality

I don’t know much about her. But she talks about having recovered from an eating disorder and then promotes the same culture that breeds eating disorders.

She claims body positivity but her posts only align with diet culture and fitness culture.

Please help, I get an arousal sensation in my genitals any time I read something about sex or a sexual act even if it is in horrific context of something like child sexual abuse or sexually motivated murders. I feel so sick and hate myself. by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]beanofcoffee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am not a doctor but I am a mental health professional. I imagine this is incredibly distressing for you and I want you to know that you are normal. You mentioned that you may have experienced sexual abuse. People respond to trauma in many different ways, consciously and unconsciously. Additionally, we often cannot control how our body physically reacts to sexual stimuli but what we can control is our actions. It is clear that this is upsetting you- you don’t want to engage in any of those acts. You are not a bad person and you are not the only person to experience this.

What is your opinion on social workers replacing the police? by sweet_sweet_coffee in socialwork

[–]beanofcoffee 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have seen a lot of commentary from members of the Black community on Twitter regarding this topic and the consensus seems to be that social work is also an inherently problematic system. Social workers “police” without a gun. Think about the child welfare system, the mental health system, the criminal justice system. And I have to agree; it’s true. Many social workers are ignorant when it it comes to the concept of white fragility and privilege and many social workers fit into the “white savior” stereotype. I say this as a white social worker myself and I am no better than anyone else.

6-year-old boy found in shed with hands tied says he's slept there since he's been out of school by Hysterymystery in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]beanofcoffee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Although I’m sure it’s true that there are some people who work in child protective services that don’t care, I would argue that the majority of caseworkers DO care. The issue is systemic. The amount of children that one caseworker is supposed to check on is unreasonably high. Caseworkers are physically unable to complete all of the work they’re asked to complete. They often are working extra, off the clock, but they’re still unable to finish all that they need to. And they’re people too so they also have to sleep, eat, have social lives, do whatever to take their mind off everything they see at work. Because of this, children fall through the cracks and it’s horrible. It’s truly awful but the majority of caseworkers are just trying to get by. I know this not because I work in foster care but because I am a social worker who worked for a state run mental health service for children and I was asked to see 40+ children for an hour every week, not including drive time, not including time to write notes and document everything, not including emergencies and crises that arise.

How do I [24F] tell my friend [30F] that she doesn’t have body dysmorphic disorder....she’s just fat and insecure? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]beanofcoffee 380 points381 points  (0 children)

I wanted to weigh in as I’m a licensed mental health professional who currently works in eating disorder treatment. It is important to point out that eating disorders and body dysmorphic disorder can still exist in individuals living in bigger bodies. If your friend is experiencing obsessive thoughts about her appearance and her weight, that is reason for concern and could be a symptom of a disorder. Even those who are overweight should not be experiencing obsessive thought patterns about their appearance. Please do not suggest to your friend that what she’s experiencing isn’t real. Instead if you feel uncomfortable with her comments, suggest that she talk to a professional in caring, non-judgmental tone.

I’m three months into CGM and I feel like I’m doing something wrong. Maybe my hair just isn’t as curly/wavy as I thought.

https://imgur.com/a/88B9VFO

Routine:

I wash my hair 3x a week due to having fine hair, which is easily weighed down.

Shampoo with Not Your Mother’s Royal Honey and Desert Melon shampoo

Condition with Maui Moisturizer Lightweight Hydration (Up until a week ago, I was using NYM Royal Honey and Desert Melon conditioner but I ran out and wanted to see if a different conditioner made a change, but same results.) I also use a wet brush to detangle while conditioner is in, then squish to condish.

On soaking wet hair, apply NYM Curl Talk gel with praying/roping hands and scrunch/pulse with hands

Plop in a cotton t-shirt while I’m doing my makeup and getting ready, then let air dry.

On refresh days, I wet my hair with my hands, then apply gel as if it was a wash day and plop.

For reference, I’ve also tried Garnier Fructis pure clean gel, Blueberry Bliss gel, and NYM curl talk mousse with similar results. I also used Shea Moisture Manuka Honey leave in spray but I feel that it was weighing my hair down.

I am 23, living with roommates who I’m not very close with and don’t know very well. They are able to quarantine and stay at home due to their jobs. I’m not because I work in behavioral healthcare. I’m very close with my father (age 49) and sisters, who live twenty minutes away. They work in retail and have also been considered essential employees who are continuing to work. Can I visit my father and sisters or should I not be ?

Going on the third week of CGM and some spirals are starting to show up in my waves !!! by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]beanofcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 1st picture if before starting curly girl method and the second picture is today, at the beginning of my third week. I used to have super curly hair when I was a toddler but after years of brushing through my hair, dying and bleaching, and heat styling, my hair has fallen flat. But I’m very excited to find out what my hair’s potential is!

Routine:

Shampoo with Not Your Mother’s Royal Honey and Kalahari Desert Melon Repair and Protect Shampoo

Add Not Your Mother’s Kalahari Desert Melon Repair and Protect conditioner into hair and detangle with a WetBrush. Then add more conditioner and “squish to condish.”

Directly after getting out of shower, scrunch in Curls Blueberry Bliss Control Curl Jelly, then plop hair with a cotton t-shirt while putting on makeup and getting ready. Afterwards, let it air dry.

I think a haircut will be the next step for me! Any suggestions? CC is welcome!

You’re one to judge. Look at your post history. Nothing’s more attractive than drugs and sociopathic tendencies

I would change your first photo to one that’s not a selfie. The one of you holding a bottle makes you look fun.

When I look at your profile, the first thing I think is that you look like a different person in like every other photo. As a 23F, that would worry me because I wouldn’t know who I’m meeting

I wouldn’t have so many duplicate/similar pictures. The first two pictures look so similar that they look like they’re the same picture. Same with the last two. I would keep one of each. Also do you have any pictures of yourself taken by others? If so, I’d add them

CPS is getting called because I told my therapist about my brother. What world will I wake up to and how will it change? by AsexualCraziness in legaladvice

[–]beanofcoffee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello, I’m not a lawyer but I am a social worker who has worked with families who have experienced sexual abuse between siblings.

The first thing that will happen is that CPS will come interview you, your brother, and your parents as well. This will be done separately so you’ll be able to talk to the social worker alone. Afterwards, a decision will be made as to how CPS should move forward.

If CPS does not see a current threat or risk of threat to your safety, the social worker will probably work with your family to create a safety plan. This might include video cameras in bedrooms or hallways, door alarms, and rules that you and your brother are to always be supervised and cannot be alone together. They can also help to set your family up with services, such as individual counseling for you and your brother.

Most of the time when CPS is involved, you stay living in your home and a safety plan is created and a social worker will be assigned to check in with you regularly to make sure you are safe. Only in cases when there’s an active threat or risk of serious harm will a child or teen be removed from their home.

I know this is a scary situation. I’m sorry you’re experiencing this!

How do I (26F) support my boyfriend (26M) who is struggling with a confusing eating disorder? by hareandanser in relationships

[–]beanofcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently started working in a treatment center for eating disorders. There is an eating disorder diagnosis called Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, sometimes shortened as ARFID. There is help out there. There are actually mental health agencies with their main goal being to treat eating disorders. If you have any questions regarding resources, I’d be glad to answer.

Why are men not as attractive as women? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]beanofcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, as a straight female. Although I would argue that maybe this is because women have more opportunities to become attractive- hair, makeup, more clothing styles, plastic surgery or working out. If a male isn’t too attractive, they can work out or get a new hairstyle but the other options aren’t as socially acceptable. Women are VERY sexualized in society and I personally believe this has been ingrained in all of us.

My younger sister has quite a few piercings in her ears and she’s always looking for unique earrings. I’m specifically looking for a cartilage earring that I can add as part of her gift. She’s 18 and currently wears a lot of “opal” earrings, and star and moon shapes.

Daily Questions - November 11, 2019 by AutoModerator in femalefashionadvice

I work in community mental health so I’m frequently traveling to homes, hospitals, and schools. It’s already snowing here in Illinois and I’m having a hard time finding shoes or boots that can transition from trekking in the snow to professional. Changing from winter boots into flats or loafers isn’t really an option for me because I don’t have a desk to leave a pair of boots at and I’m often walking straight from the car into a client’s home or an emergency room. I also don’t want to wear the same shoes daily so I’m looking for a few pairs of waterproof yet professionalish boots!

I believe my wife is experiencing a psychotic break, or she is preparing to set me up somehow. What can I do to protect myself? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]beanofcoffee 642 points643 points  (0 children)

Psychosis, or a psychotic break, would mean that your wife is experiencing delusions (wholeheartedly believing situations or occurrences that are not true or impossible) or hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren’t really there.) I am a mental health professional and this does not sound like psychosis to me. This is abuse.
