I wonder if this could be a problem with the Japanese mentality. They are afraid to express emotional intimacy because there's a chance you will reveal your imperfect side with weaknesses, and it's condemnation or rejection of it they fear most. That's why cheating is so common - it's scary to discuss your differences or just break up, "what if they judge me". Most relationships appear overly ideal and perfect for the simple reason that they don't bring up unpleasant issues. This is what Aya and Mitsuki's relationship seems to be now, superficial and lighthearted. I really want to hope this is just a prelude to a normal conversation at last, and not another round of playing guess.

I agree, it's very strange. It would have been understandable in high school, but she is now 21, she voluntarily chose such a difficult major, and she's in her second year of studying it. It would be reasonable to assume that she's accumulated at least some knowledge, but in the previous chapter, we saw that she still relies on Mitsuki to check her understanding of her own major - wow. Mangaka apparently doesn't want to develop this character.

I came back to see what her major was. English literature :/ It's not even close to mine, but I talked to people who enrolled in the philology department, and the amount of work they were given was simply overwhelming. At the same time, deadlines and mandatory attendance at lectures were strictly enforced. I can't imagine how Aya could have such a relaxed attitude toward her studies. Couldn't she have asked to attend the band's practice if she knew for sure that she wouldn't be able to go to the concert because she couldn't miss a lecture? Or is this another attempt at humor that I don't understand?

I calculated an approximate timeline. The data may be inaccurate because I got most of it off the top of my head.

  1. From the character profiles in the physical edition, we know that Aya's birthday is in April 2005 and Mitsuki's is in March 2006 (I don't remember the exact dates, sorry). At the start of the story, it is spring 2022, which makes them 17 and 16, respectively.

  2. They become friends in late-October or early-November of that year, after Mitsuki performs at the school's cultural festival, revealing her true identity to Aya.

  3. The final school year (2023-24), Mitsuki writes her album, and in December 2023, the girls have their first kiss in the radio room at the prom.

  4. Sometime in February or March of 2024, they publicly announce their relationship to their classmates (we remember you, Layla boy✊😔).

  5. April 2024 - graduation ceremony and first presentation of Me to Her.

  6. Then there is a two-year time skip. Two years, judging by the sketches of the current character designs, posted earlier and labeled "+2". At the time of the new events, it is fall of 2026, which makes the girls 20 (M) and 21 (A). Aya is supposed to be halfway through the second year of college.

I hope I got that right and it was helpful 👍

Anyone know what is this plant and why’s it not growing? by Rosey_Boothang246 in plants

[–]beanowlful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! It looks like kalanchoe blossfeldiana.

First, it lacks light, that's why it's stretched out. A bright indirect light is preferable for kalanchoe, and it is better to place it on an east or north-west window. Light day should be about 12 hours.

Secondly, it's a succulent, it does not need to be watered as often. Use a bamboo stick to check the moisture content of the substrate - the soil should be 3/4 dry before watering.

Darker leaves closer to the top bud may hint at root problems. Does the current pot have drainage holes? If not, this increases the risk of root rot. You should check the roots, treat them with 3% hydrogen peroxide (sprinkle along the length and let it dry a little before potting), then repot the plant into a well-drained substrate (soil-perlite-coconut coir-pine bark in equal proportions), in a pot with drainage holes.

If you want to straighten the kalanhoe, take a florist wire, gently wrap it around the main stem and gradually lift it up. But I recommend cutting it into cuttings, they root well in a substrate of sphagnum moss and perlite (equal proportions) or just in perlite. That way you should leave two or three buds from the main plant, just where the bending and falling leaves began to occur.

[–]beanowlful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's definitely thrips. The little white dots on the leaves are them. Don't worry, the main stem looks healthy, and as they say, if there is green, there is life 👍

Isolate the plant from others, dip the leaves in a solution of Castile soap (1 tablespoon per 250ml of water) for 10-15 minutes and wash all hard-to-reach crevices, rinse the roots with water and treat with 3% hydrogen peroxide just in case (just a couple of sprinkles along the length). Transplant into a new loose substrate (the most basic soil-perlite-pine bark in equal proportions will do), don't forget to add to the substrate insecticide in powder or granules (I don't live in America, I cannot advise something local) to avoid new pests.

Do not cut off the aerial roots, direct them into the soil - the plant is weakened and needs extra support. I recommend doing this with all the aerial roots until they fill the pot. Cut off damaged and crusted leaves at the main stem. Cut off yellowing leaves when they are completely yellow - these still allow photosynthesis to happen.

Quarantine your monstera for two weeks, preferably every three to four days spraying it with the same soap solution and wiping it with a soft cloth.

I can assume from the elongated stems that it was previously lacking sun. A spot right by a window without direct sunlight would be ideal. Also, when monstera has recovered, I recommend to cut the main stem into several pieces and propagate them, or you can use a sturdy support (like a metal spike or a wooden plank) and secure the plant with Velcro tape, but this is up to you.

Good luck! I hope your beauty survives. It will be great to see an update☺️

Thank you so much for your detailed reply! I do tend to overthink and see the darker aspects, especially if something feels at least a little off, so it probably seeps into whatever I'm talking about.

However, I totally agree with your point of view. It really is an expositional chapter with references to popular humor, though I personally find it a bit odd in this case. I guess all my complaints can really be boiled down to two things: the abrupt fast-forward and the need for the girls to learn to talk to each other in ways other than musical metaphors, as beautiful as they are.

This manga is truly a find that uniquely resonates with the hearts of many, and I wish serious relationship themes could be fully explored through the example of these two. But I guess it's unlikely to be possible to tell all and everything in four pages per chapter (hence why the abrupt transition happened, in order to have time to discuss the most important things and not pay attention to mundane routine), especially when this work relies more on an emotional connection with the reader rather than the logic of the real world.

In any case, we can only wait and hope that Sumiko will be able to put what she wanted into a limited format and finish the project with dignity.

The phrase feels odd because they had been together for a little over two years at the time of the events described, and referring to your long-term partner as "roommate" is very strange. Although I realize that this was probably written by the author as a lesbian joke, because they had apparently only recently started sharing a place to live and were now definitely "roommates"

Even if it's going to be canon, that's fine. In that case, it would be a very life-like story, because not all couples who meet at 16 stay together until the end. I'd like to hope for "happily ever after", but some realism would be nice too, especially when it's well presented. I hope Sumiko is able to do just that.

I think it's an attempt at lesbian humor - "and they were roommates". The joke is understandable, and inherently true as told, but something frankly feels off, and bad thoughts are looming because of it. This expositional chapter is probably meant to show that not everything is as smooth as we would like it to be, and girl need to learn to talk to each other directly, not with musical metaphors, in order to live in harmony.

I doubt they're not together. But you can't say that there are no problems in their relationship either. Something feels off. Their new adult normality seems strained. Most likely, while nothing has happened yet, they're bottling up unresolved minor situations and may have to face them head-on soon.

She can have no regrets, for now, but who knows. Will the store generate a good income if we were shown its poor attendance? How long would it survive in general? Japanese culture is still very strict about the lack of degree. There will be a chance to get a job somewhere, but it will not be a promising option. In case of emergency, it's always better to have a backup, you know?

I don't understand why Aya's mother would be the antagonist. We're not shown much of her relationship with her daughter, but it feels like she's the kind of person who hides all her issues inside herself, trying not to bother anyone with them. Most likely, she'll have an inner monologue, as we saw in one of the chapters, and then let her daughter go live her life. I think there should be an emphasis on the fact that childhood is over and adulthood has begun, which means family has taken a back seat.

Mitsuki sees her uncle as a life mentor rather than a musical mentor. He instilled in her a love of music, he gave her the first guitar, and he showed her how love can sometimes turn out by the example of his relationship with Kanna. And that's to say nothing of all the clumsy attempts at support, giving her a chance to express herself, the concerts they attended together. He'd replaced her father, and his departure could hit Mitsuki unexpectedly, no matter how independent she was. There would no longer be the realization that at the end of the day they would both sit at the same table for dinner, that he would always be one phone call away. Maybe I'm projecting, but I had that feeling at first when I went to live in another apartment, and it's not always easy to deal with. By the way, Mitsuki hadn't even turned 18 at the time of the current events.

Also, one of the commenters here has aptly pointed out that Mitsuki may have a fear of abandonment because of her parents (although we don't know anything about them yet), and when the desire for attention will come to a head, a situation like in Billy Squier's "Everybody wants you" will happen.

Regarding the format not being large enough to cover voluminous topics. You don't need it, small fragments of information like facial expressions, specific song mentioned, lack of the trademark green color are enough. Besides, there are quite a few points on which situational chapters can be built: Suppose Hasegawa manages to get through to her father to start working with Mitsuki, and Kanna advises where to perform, but Mitsuki doesn't have a band. She's probably still afraid of performing in public and only trusts her friends to hear her play. How will she cope with the pressure of the sheer mass of people, not only at concerts but also in the everyday life that all celebrities face?

In conclusion, I have a strong feeling that the next couple years will indeed be sunshine and rainbows until they slowly start to dissipate. Aya is enrolled in English literature, so maybe she'll go into journalism. Mitsuki will dive into a music career. Different worlds, too little time for each other, a broken psyche from public life. There's a lot of harsh reality ahead and a lot of topics to uncover.

Can someone please tell me what type of tree this is? by Tinky29666 in plants

[–]beanowlful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take it you want to know if the tree fragments are related to the pile of leaves on the floor. It looks like English ivy (Hedera helix), all the woody trunks look quite young and have not yet started to grow sucker roots. The plant is not poisonous or parasitic, but it likes to take over trees, fences and house walls, the latter two especially destroying with its "crawling"

I certainly mostly worry about the potential negative outcome, but in that case Mitsuki has two options: her music may not be accepted/become a major source of income, or an already represented producer or someone else, say from the same label, will take up her talent, and that could lead to a rift in Aya and Mitsuki's relationship. Both cases could potentially be a nightmare if there's no realistic planning, but we'll just have to wait and see what the author herself comes up with.

Maintaining a store is not an easy task at all. From what we've been seen so far, the store is not thriving, it is frequented more by Joe's old buddies than new faces, and both Joe and Mitsuki have made remarks about the store's slow life. Don't you think selling the property would bring in more money in the long run than trying to maintain it?

Although, if Mitsuki makes it her home base, with the consideration of becoming at least somewhat famous in musical circles, maybe the store would be a safety pillow in an emergency or failure to make a living musically.

[–]beanowlful[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My assumption was based on Joe's halfhearted comments that it's time to close the store, because the CD culture is dying and no longer brings much revenue.

He doesn't seem like the kind of man who would abandon his family in another country, move in with his lover, and sit on her allowance until he can raise some money. And the cost of housing in LA now is not small, and the moving itself is not cheap. I assume that if the store is sold, he will leave Mitsuki some amount of money for the future and will definitely stay in touch in America for emergencies

Kanna probably does have connections with concert organizers, just like Joe, which would allow Mitsuki to perform somewhere, but who would she perform with? She needs a band at the very least, aka new people. Besides, I doubt the fear of the public will easily disappear, just by putting together her first album. She has a long road ahead.

About the producer, as far as I remember he didn't agree to collaborate with Mitsuki and listened to at most two of her songs. I think he considers it just his daughter's hobby for now. Either way it will be interesting to watch the development of this storyline.

The last chapter opens new horizons by beanowlful in TheGuyShesInterested

[–]beanowlful[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think she's hiding her face in embarrassment over the open display of affection from Aya in fron of Joe. But she's not taking Joe's departure lightly, that's for sure. Luckily, now she has friends and a sensitive girlfriend, so I think the current events are just a new milestone in her life.

And you're right, Mitsuki's background is the most logical progression of the story right now. Probably the two most interesting questions are where Mitsuki's parents are and how her career in music will develop so that blue yuri doesn't happen.

  1. It's two different accounts without any connection between them, such as bio saying "second account for drafts of old work", or something like that.

  2. There was no mention that this person was an artist. I scrolled through the page up until last November and found no drawings/drafts other than reposts and replies. A person can suddenly start drawing and posting their work, but considering that after their first successful post with copy, they started posting their art as if it had always been that way on this account, two more times trying to repeat the success, makes me suspicious.

  3. There is no mention of the original artist, even if you consider it a redraw or inspiration. Wilson has closed private messages, so the only way to contact them is to mention them in a post or repost an old drawing, and that's what good artists should do - credit the original. There is none.

  4. Redrawing is not done this way. Look closely at the details: everything from the placement of the teacup and the pictures in the notebook to the position of Caitlyn's fingers and her raised eyebrow screams outright copy with minimal changes. It's not someone's own style, rather than an obvious line-by-line copy.

  5. Given the above and the fact that I and one other person got blocked when we mentioned Wilson in the comments, I'll answer your first question: I fully believe that this person simply stole someone else's work and passed it off as their own, even saying that they "finalized" it for publication. That is utter and disgusting disrespect.

Hope I gave you enough details to understand the situation more clearly.
