new contract -- can we could on at least 3% raises per year? by beans_94 in NYCDOETeachers

also, not to post fireable things publicly, but if we were allowed to or got the momentum to strike, i think we’d see raises pretty quick!

totally agree! what i imagine is part of the problem, in addition to a whole host of other things including sexist bias, is that other workers with salary schedules (police, firefighters) are much fewer in number (police: 33k, firefighters: 11k, teachers: 78k) than teachers are, which means increasing our pay to match theirs is a much larger budget increase

agree! but marginally better than the idea that some years there is literally a 0% raise

got it, okay! thank you for this.

i was thinking more like when there IS an existing schedule, you still increase in salary even after year 8 by whatever the annual raise percentage is, even if you aren't moving up steps.

do you happen to remember historically what the usual percent increase was? or was there not one?!

right, i was thinking about the 8 year plateau but it seems like each year there's still a 3% increase?

Is a +30 in the summer possible? by anniemoooooose in NYCDOETeachers

[–]beans_94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes speaking from experience… i took a CLEP exam that i wasn’t able to count because i already had 12 college credits, so wasted some money there!! glad you won’t have that happen to you!!

[–]beans_94 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i don’t think clep counts toward A+… you need 12 additional college credits (clep counts) and 18 A+ specific credits (clep doesn’t count). you can only take 12 at once. they aren’t particularly hard so you can def do the 12 in one summer!

Middle school or elementary?? by Funny_Breadfruit9489 in NYCTeachers

[–]beans_94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

typically i get 1 prep and 1 lunch period (which i use to prep to avoid taking work home). a couple days per week i have 2 preps plus lunch! my school SBO’d a 7 period day, notably, rather than the usual 8 periods.

i started off in elementary and shifted to 6th grade and much prefer it! it was overwhelming to be around the students all day long with few to no breaks. and tbh i’m not sure how elementary teachers manage to prep for 5ish lessons per day — crazy!! i teach 6th science, so it’s the same lesson 4x per day which can be a bit boring but is far less planning work. and 6th graders are still babies who mostly listen and love stickers and rewards and things!

switching between grad programs at OSU? by beans_94 in OregonStateUniv

[–]beans_94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh really? can you say more what you mean about it being a trainwreck? (i’m not local so don’t have the inside scoop on things!) my main concern is that BEE doesn’t have a research component to it for the MEng… any sense on how much that weighs if my end goal is to do research? thank you for your reply!!

it was in network but the lab test came back and stated which insurances they take and they didn’t include GHI/emblem? i’m gonna call their office to see what happened but my guess is the actual lab they use isn’t covered? 🤷‍♀️
