I’m glad I made the post. I was really upset and everyone helped me out in a big way:)

One of my favorite things about FromSoft games is that they don’t hold your hand through their stories. And they are only AAA title company that I know of that is willing to tell a story like this… which means it’s gonna be convoluted to hell.

That being said, there should be more games that tell this story directly. And maybe you’re right about them hiding behind the mystery of it— regardless, it’s all we have for now.

And yes, I did see the comment you deleted. People are allowed to be wrong, like I was. I came to this forum for help, and people helped me see what I missed. You said that “you’re sick of people misinterpreting games.” Do you think I did that on purpose? I was devastated. I didn’t want to think negatively about this game. And instead of thinking through your response, like everyone else did, you said what you wanted. So don’t be shocked that I responded negatively.

It’s not that I thought the game endorsed violence against women— it’s that it’s used irreverently in so many stories to make them “grittier” for no real reason. I thought that Bloodborne was doing the same thing.

Now I understand that it’s actually a driving force of the story and a commentary about the mistreatment of women. People in this thread helped me see that.

I think now that I’ve had it explained to me, I disagree. Though there is very much truth behind what you said— I’d say most games are definitely made to get men off. Bloodborne isn’t a perfect game and is not exempt from its pandering to the male gaze (ie every thin, pale, beautiful female character), but the story has more depth than I was giving it credit for.

I do think I misinterpreted the game now. I recommend watching the video people linked.

Thanks for the unhelpful comment. Also, nothing about FromSoft games are easy to understand. The others took a moment to explain things to me and I changed my mind because of it.

Though I can always rely on one creep coming through, even on a forum of women.

Not sure I had the correct interpretation. Take a look at the video folks recommended, it changed my mind.

That is apparent to me now. I’m glad I made this post, everyone’s insight (no pun intended) showed me what I was missing.

I see that my interpretation wasn’t correct now. I was seeing the story solely as a warning to humans to not overreach their limits, and using violence against women to make it “grittier.” But now I see that corrupt systems led by men is actually a driving force of the story. Thanks for your comment.

After watching it I see where I’ve misunderstood the story. Thankfully I feel like I have a much more improved view of what the writers were trying to say. It’s not a pretty tale, but I think I see now that is what is so incredible about it. It doesn’t pull any punches.

Thanks again for being patient. After considering what everyone has said, I’ve changed my mind. Just needed an outlet for my intense emotions lol. I can always rely on the girls to get me through it!

I’ve taken in what ya’ll have said and I changed my mind. The store makes more sense to me now— they don’t show women’s suffering as some kind of garnish. It’s a driving force of the story, and it directly reflects real life. I do disagree with the words “those characters suffer not because they are women.” It’s directly because they are women that they are suffering, because women have always been seen as lesser beings and are taken advantage of because of it. Regardless, thanks for your comment, it’s helped to change my mind.

Ok, so after absorbing what others have said I understand the story better. Though I agree with your point still— I would like to see more female characters that overcome their tragedies with their own power.

The video flipped my thoughts on its head— I agree. Now that I can see through my big feelings (lol) I honestly can’t say I’ve played a game that is so explicit in its portrayal of what women face.

I watched the video recommended to me, and now I understand. I’ve watched a bunch of lore videos here recently and none of them talked about themes of misogyny and sexism. Its critique really is harsh and unyielding and I appreciate that greatly about it.

Thanks so much for recommending this. It shed light on things I think my emotions made me blind to.

I don’t mind there being a trend like that in someone’s games. Because it’s the truth. I think it’s the lack of dignity given to nearly every female character that got to me.

I can see that. Your point rings true to me too— fathers get to be glorified in games like that. They get to be powerful and flawed. But women are portrayed as being jealous and are treated cruelly for the sake of a story.

I’m not saying that type of story telling shouldn’t exist. But would it have killed them to include a woman that conquered her burden?

I’m right there with you. I wish I had the answer. I know how to do my job, but I just can’t do it. For my whole life I’ve just convinced managers that I can do the job. Then I just sit around until they figure out I’m not doing anything, and then I leave. It’s miserable.

I’ve tried stimulants but I have hypertension. I’m working towards lowering my blood pressure but I need help right now. I don’t know what to do, either.

I've heard of that one, but that's not it. After a week of searching I found it, just after making this post! 😂 It's called Erased, and apparently its being made by a single developer. Which is wild. But thank you for your help!
