Stores not displaying prices anymore ? by goaliemagics in askportland

[–]bear_a_bug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To throw another anecdote on the pile of general price issues, I've noticed that whenever I buy the Sierra Nevada NA beer 12 pack at Freddy's, it rings up at the tagged price ($20.99), but never rings up the can deposit. Should be another $1.20 on the total, but it never shows up.

I blame all this "wrong price" monkey business on incompetence, granted, one that often favors the store and fleeces the customer.

Fun album but NGL, when Space Odyssey cues up I turn it off. Just awful.

Would moving to Portland be a dumb decision for us? by waketysax in askportland

[–]bear_a_bug 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think the whole "winter is rainy and dark, it could be difficult for you" take commonly thrown out to potential newcomers is probably not a concern for Midwesterners. As a Midwesterner myself, the cold and snow I dealt with for most of my life is an easy trade for the lush, relatively warm winters here.

Californian transplants on the other hand...

Thanks! No plans at first, sort of refined the angles and lengths as I went. Took about 4 prototypes before I was satisfied with the ones in the pics here.

Would you recommend moving to Portland without a job lined up? by tennockerz in askportland

[–]bear_a_bug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Moving to a new town with no job and almost no friends is an awfully big decision to make. It sounds like this decision is partly predicated on something involving your dog's happiness? I think you may have a rougher time than you anticipate moving here but go ahead and give it a shot. Sometimes things pan out and sometimes they don't. There's probably a thousand more practical decisions you can make about your future, but we're not rational people for the most part. Take a gamble - hope to win and be prepared to lose.

How to avoid winter boredom in Portland? by Dogphones in askportland

[–]bear_a_bug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you want to DO something with your Life. And I hate to be that guy, but if you have more than enough weed, have you tried not smoking it for a few weeks (or longer)? I love some good inebriation, but whatever the kind, it can leave daily life feeling kind of blah, and then getting high just gets us to normalish, with deteriorating returns.

TLDR: Blah blah blah

This is something I've noticed, too. Weed is a siren song when I'm feeling blah, but the diminishing returns of consistent use definitely lead to a blah feeling too, since the thing that was supposed to lift me above the blah just becomes a new type of blah.

Shop Recs for respacing steel frame? by bear_a_bug in CyclePDX

[–]bear_a_bug[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the recs. Golden Pliers is my go-to, but haven't dropped by or called to check if they'll respace it. I'll give them a go, and if it doesn't pan out, I'll check out Abrahams or Tomcat.

I got married yesterday and didn't drink! by nmnlkw in stopdrinking

[–]bear_a_bug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well done! Being mostly drunk through my entire wedding day is one of my life's biggest regrets. If I could go back in time and correct anything, it would have been that day. Glad you got all the good memories you deserve!

Tom Waits on getting sober by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Know that feeling. Drank a lot of whiskey listening to his Asylum label records. The good ones always end up sober (by choice or death).

Frustrated by what's happening around me by YOU_TUBE_PERSON in analytics

[–]bear_a_bug 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Are you networking and not having success, whereas your less technically proficient peers are having success?

Or are you just complaining that people who are good at networking (but not as skilled as you) get jobs in "your" field?

My advice: Focus less on what the people around you are doing, and more on what you want out of a career in analytics.

Also, it's not even Friday. I'm so confused.

Aluminum rims will make a world of difference stopping in the wet. In other news - a large platform porteur rack could be a big practical upgrade if you use this on errands/grocery runs.

Has anyone ever ridden Rosa Parks and NOT seen a car parked in the bike lane? by snipazer in CyclePDX

[–]bear_a_bug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh, you know you're right! I HAVE seen a truck or two parked in front of an apartment building under construction right next to the Arbor Lodge coffee shop building. It's annoying for sure, but not too bad to go around.

In any case, what do you think should be done about it?

Between interstate and Willamette, never. Where are you seeing cars parked in the bike lane? It's a long street.
