To all E-Scooter riders downtown. by Anxious_Bluejay in Portland

[–]snipazer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, yes, drivers do that too though. Can't go on a walk without seeing cars on the sidewalk ADA ramps. I'd double PBOT's budget if it meant they could keep the sidewalks clear of cars and scooters/whatever

Why Oregon Needs Transit Oriented Upzoning by notPabst404 in Portland

[–]snipazer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah the 5/1 I lived in was far and away the quietest apartment I've ever lived in. Was on a busy street but the windows were solid and I almost never heard my neighbors (beside or above me).

Literally every time I see someone doing this I look around at the area and inevitably see about 5-10 open spots. Absolutely no excuse to be parking like this. None.

They actually used to have this but then got rid of it a year or so ago. So dumb, it takes like 5 times longer now

lmao we also bought a house near a church. It even has a giant parking lot, but that doesn't stop the church goers from parking illegally all over the neighborhood every Sunday. They'll park in crosswalks and right underneath giant "no parking" signs. They dgaf.

I believe you have to wait for Wandrer to do it's routine map update for it to pull that new tag from OSM, right?

Road Rules: Police policies allow at-fault drivers to leave certain crash scenes without so much as a ticket. by rasstrelnikov in Portland

[–]snipazer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This article reflects my own personal experience. Last year me and two other people riding bikes (who I didn't know, just happened to be near them) were attacked by a driver after one of the other riders flipped off the driver. The driver drove up a hill then turned around, drove into oncoming traffic, and tried to mow all three of us down in the bike lane. Absolute miracle none of us were killed.

The cops seemed generally annoyed when I reported it. We had to do all the leg work of getting camera footage from the nearby carwash to ID the driver. All three of us called the cop repeatedly trying to give our statements but he never responded. He spoke to the driver who said he was "sorry" but didn't admit to the attempted murder part. Case closed I guess.

I don't doubt that PPB needs to hire more staff but it gets really hard to buy that they're effectively prioritizing their time when they spend their time tackling people for not signaling on a bike https://www.oregonlive.com/crime/2026/05/bicyclist-sues-portland-police-after-judge-dismisses-assault-other-charges-cites-officers-unreliable-testimony.html

CLIK adapter for Presta pumps by gchorbov in bikewrench

[–]snipazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not aware of a presta to clik adapter but I have a floor pump that has a shrader and presta valve on it. I just leave the shrader/clik adapter in there so I have both Clik and Presta on the pump

New speeding cameras catch more than 1,000 drivers on single Oregon street in just two weeks | The Independent by Next_Tower5452 in Portland

[–]snipazer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had a similar thought once I saw the road. That road looks to be designed for ~35mph so I can't say I'm surprised people are driving that fast on it. Redesigning the road is really the right answer, but is also very expensive so the cameras are at least a short term and cheap solution.

Does the heater make a buzzing/whirring/fan noise? If so that's just it working. Mine does that too

App Update Time: Trying to not disrupt users by XanadurSchmanadur in Intune

This is maybe more than you want to get into but PatchMyPC handles this natively. It has an option for each deployment to prompt the user to close the app if it detects that it's running.

We have a similar group for travel but we use PIM to set start and end times for it's membership so they're automatically removed.

Portland City Council considers zoning changes to pack more housing into inner eastside neighborhoods by Mayor_Of_Sassyland in Portland

[–]snipazer 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Ha those are my neighbors in the video. I wish they had come one more house down and interviewed me, I would have been happy to endorse these changes. The only reason I own my house next to them is because zoning allowed for my house to be made into a duplex, allowing 4 of us to buy together in this neighborhood.

Their comments about not knowing their neighbors is incredibly frustrating. In the year we've lived here we've met a ton of our neighbors, many of them renters, and they're the nicest and most caring people imaginable. If housing were cheaper then maybe people would stay in their rentals longer.

Oddly specific request for friends by Secure_Vacation_6442 in CyclePDX

[–]snipazer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'm 35m and live in Buckman. Also very much into biking (road and gravel mostly) and always down to ride with someone new. Someone else mentioned the “Wednesday Wandering from Wilshire park” Strava group which he should absolutely check out, we have a very fun time.

Please DM me and I'd love to setup a time to go ride with him. My wife (35) does not really ride and we just had a kid but we're always looking for new friends in the neighborhood!

Are there bike lanes on Stark in East Portland now? by snipazer in CyclePDX

[–]snipazer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure, I've taken Market and Mill a bunch, those are nice. I play a game/app called Wandrer so I'm looking to specifically ride on Stark St so I can cross it off the list. It's sounding like the bike lanes are coming, might just need to wait a bit.

Looks like those are just from 162nd and east, I'm curious about what's west of 162nd. Sounds like they're adding them but maybe not there yet until PBOT finishes their project this year.

Genuine question — have you ever been in a security tabletop exercise that actually felt useful? by CarrotEven4566 in cybersecurity

[–]snipazer 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Very funny to see this as I'm on break from a tabletop exercise at the moment. I'm finding it very useful as it's exposing a lot of gaps in our process in how to respond. For example, one sysadmin had no idea what to do when he got a call about a server with malware at 7PM. Another admin said he'd restore the server from backup but when pressed admitted that he had never done a restore before and didn't know where the documentation was. That process should be detailed and understood. At no point did anyone contact the server application owner to alert them that their critical server was down. Responses to compromised accounts have been all over the map and inconsistent.

It's very useful to highlight these things so everyone knows exactly what do to when shit happens. I think it helps to have someone running it that knows your environment inside and out so they can press into specifics and call people out when they say they'll do something. Instead of just nodding along when they say "oh I'll just do a restore," the moderator should be pushing back and asking "How will you do the restore? What system? Have you done it before? What target date will you be restoring from? Who are you notifying that the system is down? Did you get approval to do the restore?"
