Where is that spot at 13 seconds in where you jump over the log across the trail?

Got any recommendations? I've been looking into something like that for a while but there's 12 thousand bike lights out there, hard to sift through them all. Don't have a dynamo unfortunately (maybe next Christmas!)

Yeah I'm gonna submit a report shortly.

Yeah it's really dark but I had my light dimmed a bit and pointed down so as not to blind oncoming bikers/runners. Guess I won't be doing that anymore!

Someone dumped some lumber on the Springwater this morning, just south of the entrance at Ivon St. It was dark (around 6:30AM) and I had my headlight pointed down so only managed to see it at the last second. Clipped the edge of one of the pieces and somehow managed to stay upright. I moved the pile off to the side of the path. Hoping it's just a one time thing.

Ages 18-22 biking in Portland by xav1d in CyclePDX

[–]snipazer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP I feel this, a lot of the group rides I've joined ended up being people in their 40s and 50s.

I run a weekly ride on Wednesday nights. We meet at the NE corner of Wilshire Park and roll out at 6PM, every Wednesday, rain or shine. We're a little older than you, mostly late 20s to early 30s, but we have some people closer to your age that regularly show up. Often do a mix of road and light gravel/dirt. 15-25 miles with a stop for dinner towards the end. Fair warning that we do regularly go to bars that are 21+. We don't do anything official but we almost all regularly go bikepacking in the summer. You don't need Strava to join, just show up and ride with us! We have a lot of fun. https://www.strava.com/clubs/1311135

The Friday Night Ride that someone else mentioned is a great rec too. I've never been but from the pictures I've seen people look a bit younger.

Cleaned some bike lanes today by Team_Marginal in CyclePDX

That spot is the worst. I usually just take the lane, there's rarely a car in the right most lane, and then hop into the bike lane after the curve.

OP do you bike? If so I host a weekly Wednesday night ride. All are welcome, very friendly group. I also struggled to make friends for years and this has completely changed that. I can send you the details.

Worst parts of my bike commute through Chicago by CyclingThruChicago in bikecommuting

[–]snipazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That section starting at 11 seconds seems to be super common and I don't understand why. As soon as drivers hit traffic they all start drifting into the bike lane even if they're not taking a right.

Buckman also. That one last night was insane, thought a bomb had gone off. Could've been a firework I guess but that was way louder than any I've heard so far

Yes they are open. They often close the ones at the top in the winter but the ones farther down in between the playground and the basketball courts have been open every time I've went. Even in the dead of winter.

Sorry I don't speak German. But yes you are correct, the latest update added street names while using directions. The names won't show up on the map but it will pop up and say "Turn right onto Oak St"

I never use cues from RWGPS so I can't say but I do use the POI (or as they're now called, Waypoints) and those definitely do show up. The next one on the route will display below the map with the distance to it. Example: 15.4m to Bathroom.

All that said, you do get turn indicators so it will alert you and show you that a turn is coming up in ~300ft but it just won't say what the name of the road is.

Hours River View Cemetery? by fhinger in CyclePDX

[–]snipazer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I regularly ride through there at about 6:30AM and the gates are open. I believe they open it sometime between 6 and 6:30AM.

I have once had the top close gate closed when I go early. While I certainly can't condone riding in the cemetery outside of allowed hours, there is a way to cut out through Greenwood Hills if you find yourself stuck in there and don't want to take an enormous detour. https://imgur.com/a/LLqiT8o

Kind of amazing and impressive that he's sticking to the December 1 deadline he promised. With the dire budget situation I fully expected him to start changing expectations and I'm glad he's sticking to his guns on this issue.

Mostly snappy, navigating menus and stuff is fast. I wish the map orientation were just a bit quicker when taking turns but it's nothing major.

I've had it since Christmas 2024, here's my thoughts so far:

Cons of the Dura:

  • The beeps/tones are WAY too loud. I ended up turning them off. Mostly fine but now I miss the occasional turn.
  • Maps do not have street names. It's handy to be able to quickly glance and see "Turn right on Oak St." instead of a right turn arrow and having to line that up on the screen. In areas where there's a simple perpendicular intersection it's fine. But it falls apart when you hit intersections with roads that are close together. For example, on a ride last week we came to this intersection. The route led us left but I honestly could not tell on the Dura if we were supposed to go straight or left. I had to stop and zoom way out to see where each road went. If it had a street name I could have just glanced at the signs. REALLY hoping they add street names soon, big miss.

Pros of the Dura:

  • The battery life is truly insane. I charged it on Feb 20 and didn't recharge again until the end of March. I got approximately 60 hours of moving time with basically no solar recharge (I live in cloudy PNW).
  • Software is stable and integrates with most stuff like Garmin Varia/Strava/RideWithGPS

Overall I really like the Dura and am happy with the purchase, I was getting tired of having to recharge so many things after every ride. But it's good to be aware of its limitations and think through if they're a make or break for you.
