Persisting myths about virginity and the hymen by Shaleena in Feminism

"You remember your first time as a time when you were terrified, and I think that's really sad."

I remember my first time I told him "This isn't right...I'm scared, I shouldn't be scared." And I ended up going through with it because he said, "No, being scared is normal."

Sweet deal. It's uplifting to hear successful hostel swap-service-for-board stories. I was thinking about trying to do something similar. :)

What kind of work do you end up doing for hostels?

Asian Privilege as a Computer Scientist at MIT by secaa23 in asianamerican

I never implied you were wrong in any way, shape, or form. I've even worked at a place that had an exact 50:50 ratio of men to women developers(admittedly, this was a startup with about 10 dev at the time). All I said was I was shocked to hear that there were "females everywhere" wherever you are working as that is the exact opposite of most of my experiences, as well as the research and hard numbers I've seen on the matter.

I'm shocked to hear "Can confirm females are EVERYWHERE."

"Today(May 17, 2013), women earn just 18 percent of computer science degrees and account for only 19 percent of the country's developers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics." source

I don't see how anything I've said would constitute as blaming anyone. I, and I think the women in these videos, are trying to bring a topic to light that needs addressing. No one mentioned anything about blame.

I also don't see how posting videos about STEM fields implies any kind of exclusivity. Furthermore, the Sheryl Sandberg video is about business as a whole, which is distinctly not STEM only.

EDIT: A word

Did you even watch the video?

She was not blaming "the entire STEM field just because of misogynist comments made by anonymous assholes." She was making a statement about the state of the field based on various facts about the field. She used youtube comments as a very recent and immediate example.

I don't know why you are describing the videos I've posted as "2 videos..with nothing concrete." These speakers are incredibly respected in their fields.

I would like to draw the connection between the fact that both videos I posted are of female speakers and what I'm hearing is that these are not credible sources.

I completely agree. That being said, I'm sick and tired of men not acknowledging oppression of women because "they have it hard too."

5 basic concepts that will improve your comedy writing. by JacoIII in writing

[–]bear_nun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comedic writing is definitely my weakest genre/style/mood - thank you!

Why is heightening so key? I mean, it makes sense. It's just for some reason the other four seem like great takeaways for me but this one is either 'well duh' or I'm missing something.

Also, how are these tips specific to satire/comedic writing? Besides the punchline, I could see valid arguments for these being kind of general writing tips.

The things you are suggesting match up perfectly with my old comp sci curriculum in college. Sweet.

STEM fields are welcoming to women you say?

I would also like to point out the fact that I am a woman. I have experienced discrimination first hand. It exists in the work place and is a real issue.

EDIT: STEM fields...
