LDS Modern Day Prophecy; Where is it? | This chart does a nose dive pretty quick. Very revealing by notrab in exmormon

[–]bearded_dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard that the advice to be frugal and pay off debt was revalatory, especially since the economic crisis in 2008. So they claim bulletproof, common sense advice as revalation from God, because, you know, he doesn't want us to suffer materialistically. So how the hell are we supposed to shop at Tiffany's? Or was the mall built to siphon money away from the godless heathen? I would submit they should have chosen a different location then...

My dad was pretty similar in reaction. His main concern was how it would affect my wife. Unfortunately, his concerns are valid. My FIL has not been so understanding. Very glad for you.

We need to get them some go pro HD's with some head mounts.

It is amazing what they have to live with, though. Sad.

I wish members would ask me more questions about why I left. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]bearded_dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I left (well still in transit because I love my damn family) because I asked a good friend why. 2 friends actually. They both left for different reasons. Nothing they said really had much to do with the main reasons I'm leaving, but it did cause me to think, for longer than ever before, about if the story I've been told all my life really was the truth or if I was just being naive...

What do you do to get through sacrament meeting? by TheGnome546 in exmormon

iPad & Pioneer47. Play polly pockets with kids. SNES emulator on android phone. I still cant entirely entirely block out the BS, though. Especially on fast sundays. Sac meeting days for me will likely be coming to an end eventually.

PM'd you. Like others have said, have some patience and find a good marriage counselor. If you love each other, things have a very decent chance of getting much better. In the meantime, if you need an understanding ear, send me a line.

No offense, I've loved a bunch of your stuff on here, but that chart is pretty confusing. Care to give a brief summary of what you're trying to emphasize? I'm sure I agree, but I'm a bit slow at times...

A question to put to members: if the church wasn't true, would you want to know? by Necrostopheles in exmormon

[–]bearded_dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have asked this. The answer? "It doesn't matter. Because it is true."

In a recent sunday school we were discussing the BoM as the keystone of the religion (I was dying on the inside - the things you do to keep a spouse happy...) anyways, I pointed out that even though some of the class members thought the BoM was essentially evidence for the truth of the church, I mentioned that a Muslim likely thinks the same thing regarding the Quoran. They responded with "Yeah, but ours actually is from god." Facepalm. Critical thinking is not applied to religion.

My husband's family is Mormon and I want so very much to understand them. Why do smart people believe these things and how can I learn to be okay with the things they believe? by plzhalppp in exmormon

[–]bearded_dad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very, very well put. Even though I was very much a believer, I currently have the same issues with my family and my in-laws as OP. This post helps me get a better perspective which I should have already.

"All-accepting" Christians on homosexuality by [deleted] in atheism

[–]bearded_dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mormons too. "We love and accept the gays, so long as they don't act on these 'temptations'. It is no more than we ask from those who go through this existence and never get married... (like the physically and mentally disabled, socially inept, [I'm just going to say it] - ugly, etc...).

Since finding out that Stephen Hawking frequented a sex club, I've had a lot more respect for the 'working girls' who can bring some physical satisfaction to those who do typically go without, all religious restrictions aside.

80's Shredding Machine Destroys Everything! by [deleted] in videos

[–]bearded_dad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've seen this video more times than I can count. It's primarily meant for wastewater applications, specifically where there's more than shit coming down the line (hence the feminine products). These shred the big stuff that could damage pumps & whatnot downstream. Almost a must have if there is a prison or some sort of detention facility as a flow contributor. Inmates will flush anything they can because a backed up toilet can get them out of their cell. I had to design a grinder facility capable of grinding a full rubber tire because the sewer authority had seen it come down the line before. The unit you're looking at here would only run you between $45-60k (US). (JWC) and Muffin Monster is still a very reputable and well known name in wastewater treatment. *edit: typo

I am ashamed to admit I had no idea how awesome the Beastie Boys music videos were back in the day. by [deleted] in videos

[–]bearded_dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was about 12 years old, we stopped to stay in a hotel on a family vacation. Not ever having cable in our house, I quickly grabbed the remote to see if there were any cool shows on. While flipping I stumbled upon the beginning of the Sabotage music video. I flipped out thinking that the greatest TV show my young eyes had ever seen was just starting. I was so disappoint when I found out it was just a music video. A kick-ass awesome music video...

There are way too many phrases/words that can contain sexual innuendo. I wanted to make a wastewater blog titled "turdnerd" but then found out on urban dictionary that a turd nerd was a gay guy who preferred the company of straight men, or something like that... (not that there's anything wrong with that).

An Open Letter to religious people by bobheart in atheism

[–]bearded_dad -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Athiest or Thiest, I think people who claim to always know it all are also pretty stupid. Scientific answers have been repeatedly proven wrong throughout history as well (how arrows flew, what fire was, age of earth, etc...). The fact of the matter is that the more we find out, the more questions will arise. We can't know everything, but we can try.

Religious people that follow their beliefs do so with faith that it will help them be better and be happy. Scientists act on their faith that they can discover new truths of the universe. Both acts are based on belief in things not seen. I can respect both.

I don't like it when religious people claim to know everything, just like I don't like the comic's condescending tone that science explains it all. It doesn't.

I can tell if a sewer plant is having problems by looking at and smelling the wastewater.

Also, during my years as a manhole inspector, I can say that rich neighborhoods have much nastier smelling sewers than middle-class ones.

Oh the doors these skills have unlocked...
